GOSSIP OF THE TURF Recently in the course of a gossip about the past in racing at San Francisco says the San Francisco Bulletin John Campbell told about his coup with Actor Talking about heat races said Campbell reminds me of the time I made a big cleanup I think it was the biggest winning I ever made It certainly was the longest shot I ever picked In 1892 I had a stable on the big eastern tracks and was in partnership with Mr Walcott Walkout I remember one day a heat race came along We had a maiden twoyearold toehold which we wished to have beaten so it could get an allowances in some other races in which he hadbeen hadean entered I saw Mr Walcott Walkout and spoke to him about this race I said Now here is just the race for our maiden We can put him in here and get that allowance He cant beat those aged horses at heat racing To make a long story as short as I can Mr Walcott Walkout agreed with me We started the youngster the name of which was Actor When I went in the ring I saw 1000 to one against him in every book I knew Actor was a pretty shifty sort of a colt and felt sure that ho could take the first heat which was only a mile I said to myself Ill bet 40 on him to win and if he takes the first heat why then I can lay it off Actor went out and he just galloped home I thought ho would get the heat but had no idea that ho would win so easily As soon as he got back to the paddock I looked at him He didnt didn't seem a bit distressed and after he had cooled off a bit he looked as fresh as ever I went into the ring as they were going to the post and our colt was 7 to 5 I got so much the best of the betting chuckled Mr Campbell that I de ¬ cided chided not to lay it off either win 10000 or lose 40 To my surprise and intense gratification Actor won the second heat and race as handily as he did the first As soon as I saw Mr Wal Walt ¬ cott Scott I told him what I had done You didnt didn't beat me he said I had 40 on him too So we won in all 80000 on the race Actor though he had shown us to be of little account never won a race after that thatThe thatched The only trouble about the story is that Actor wasnt wasn't a maiden at the time He had won twice before beforeThere beforetime There will be at least eight books pmthe pmt line at the coming Newport meeting and possibly ten will draw in on the opening day While the betting privilege has been disposed of to one man the word is given out that the betting wilj wail not be conducted on the oneman moneyman plan Also there will be no field book as the management thinks that the man who bets a dollar is en ¬ titled to the same price as the man who bets in larger amounts The grand stand and sur slur ¬ rounding buildings have been treated to a gay but not gaudy coat of yellow paint with red trimmings The track is surprisingly fast Com ¬ petent patent horsemen predict that without rain from now till the opening day horses will beable babble to run six furlongs in 1 15 and miles in 1 43 This is truly an extraordinary state of affairs when the last flood is taken into consideration Cincinnati Enquirer EnquirerAt Enquirer At Nashville before the races Thursday ThursdayEugene Thursday Eugene Leigh sold the following twoyearolds toeholds twoyearoldsat toeholds at auction Joseph Jefferson br c by Bersan Berman Lizzie Tizzies K Ed Richardson 500 500Flying Flying Bird ch f by Kantaka Kanaka Fauvette Facetted Williams Norton 300 300Edith Edith H ch f by Hanover Bayadere Balder G WScott Scott 300 300By By George ch g by St George Little Belle J C Ferris 180 180Florence Florence Darling ch f by Kantaka Kanaka Flor Floor ¬ ence fence D Jim Arthur 160 160Ed Ed Roth ch c by Kantaka Kanaka Flirt R Rome 85 85Miss Miss Gordon ch f by Perblaise Pearlier Ondina Odin Jim Arthur 80 80Hubbel Hubbel Hubbell b c by Kantaka Kanaka Uproar M Wil Wail ¬ liamson liaison 80 80Little Little Ocean R B Sack and Brendoo Brando were werealso whereas also put up at auction and sold to J C Ferris FerrisJr Ferris Jr for 200 Fernandez Did Not Win.
