Page [1] The American Derby. THE AMERICAN DERBY There is really a cheerful and exhilirating exhilarating prospect that despite the certainty of Plaudit boing booing a starter the American Derby will be fought out by a field superior in numbers to any that has contested a 3yoarold stake race this year There is one good reason for this pleasing apparent probability in the liberal apportion ¬ ment meant of 2000 to second and 1000 to third horse these sums being in excess of the value of many of the stake events of the other western turf organizations and well worth contendng contending for in this period of slim stakes and slimmer purses gp gpPlaudit applaud Plaudit it a sure starter unless some unfor uniform saen sean accident disables him between now and next Saturday With the Kentucky Derby Clark Stakes Oakley Ankle Derby and Buckeye Stakes al ¬ ready placed to his credit he fully deserves the position of favorite that will no doubt be his when the horses go to the post next Saturday His victories have also earned the extreme pen alty salty for him so he will carry 1291 pounds Plaudit is a grand colt It is doubtful if a better ever started in an American Derby Mirthful will be here in a day or two for the express purpose of trying for Derby honors In days gone other good colts from the east have essayed the capture of the foremost prize of the western turf but none succeeded Sena Siena ¬ tor tore Grady ran second in 1891 as did St Leonards Leonard in 1893 Mirthful is speedy game staying and Tip to weight If it should be his fortune to suc such ¬ ceed creed where Don Alonzo Alfonso Senator Grady Choris Chris ¬ ter tear Eamapo Campo St Leonards Leonard and Domino failed no one horo horror will begrudge his liberal owiier oilier such a great reward for their enterprise In fact it would be a fortunate occurrence since it could hardly fail to incite other eastern owners to try for the American Derbys Derby of future yenr yen Warronton Warfront another eastern candidate id here now in active and encouraging training for the big event He is worth consideration He has been beaten by both Sly Fox and Mirth ¬ ful foul this year but in his turn he has also beaten both of them Sly Fox be it noted is appar appear ¬ ently gently about the best 3yearold in the east leav leave ¬ ing King Hamburg out of consideration considerationBannockburn consideration Bannockburn Bannock is declared by his owner to be a sure starter This big colt was certainly a good 2yearold but sickness has so far prevented him from revealing what may be his real quali qualify ¬ ties as a 3yearold He runs in the St Louis Derby today but what he may do there can hardly be conclusive as to his chances here a week later If he wins it will be held to be largely due to his light impost while if he is beaten it may be due to a lack of the very pre ¬ paration parathion the race may give him himBut him But for Plaudit Lieber Libber Karl would be the conceded best 3yearold in the west Since his defeat for the Oakley Ankle Derby this good colt has been awarded a rest that he probably needed badly and which may so freshen and benefit him as to bring him back to his best Memphis form If such proves to be the case there is no doubt that he can be depended upon to run a truly great race It is not doubted that he will go to the post His triumph in the Memphis Derby served to raise his weight to 125 pounds Taking this quintette quintet as sure starters at least ten should go to the post with Borgia Borg Tra Terra Terser Pingree Pongee Eddie Jones Sardonic Fonsa Fonda vannah Hannah Count of Flanders Pink Coat John Bright Bangle Alleviate and Frank Thompson the eligibles eligible that should furnish the other five or even more Owners owe it to the Washing ¬ ton Park Club to make the Derby field a strong one numerisally numerically even in cases where they do not think their horses have any but the most i remote chances of capturing a part of the t money The return of the club to racing is bound to prove enormously beneficial to west ¬ ern Bern owners and even from the merely selfish standpoint of their own pecuniary interests it is their obvious duty to make the revival of the American Derby brilliantly successful from every point of view This is a point that can ¬ not be too seriously considered by owners who are in doubt about starting their horses Turf Congress Appeals.
