Page [1] Harlem's Closing Day. HARLKMS HARKS CLOSING DAY DAYHugh Daylight Hugh Penny won the Garden City Handicap = at Harlem in the presence of a large concourse of people The stake was worth 1360 to the winner 200 to the second and 100 to the third horse There were nine starters The con ¬ ditions editions of the race called for a dash at three fourths of a mile for which horses three years old and upward were eligible The scratching of Algol the winner of the Wheeler Handicap deprived the event of much interest Algols Algol stable companion Timemaker Tidemark ruled the favor ¬ ite bite at 3 to 1 Abuse Lady Ellerslie Wellesley and Hugh Penny next in favor The winners post price was 8 21 65 Eugenia Wickes Wickets was backed from 15 down to 8 to 1 Traverser Traverse from 15 down to 10 to 1 Dave Waldo Weald advanced in price from 6 to 15 to 1 He ran in the colors of Dave Waldo Weald and never within gun ¬ shot finished pulled up far in the rear After some delay the horses were dispatched fairly well together Hugh Peuny Puny at once took command and the further they went the greater his lead so that ho won pulling up Traverser Traverse breaking from behind was second to the last seventyfive seventy yards where the race for place honors was a hot one Traverser Traverse Lady Ellerslie Wellesley and Abuse being abreast Licalzis Localism mare on the inside getting the place Abuse outside land ¬ ing King third money If Hugh Penny had not started it woud would have been a splendid handi hand ¬ cap Timemaker Tidemark was prominent to the home ¬ stretch where he quit badly Eugenia Wickes Wickets greatly disappointed her backers she collided with Sacsuma Satsuma soon after flag fall fallStarter alliterate Starter Dwyer got the sixteen starters in the first race off well together Fair Deceiver first away lasted in front to the last sixteenth Little Alarm second for a quarter then gave place to Dr Sharp off third Incetatus Dictates was fourth and Easter Eve fifth at the far turn where from just behind her Cyclone andBorden adore began to move up Waubun Auburn who was backed from 40 down to 15 to 1 was here absolutely last In the final rally J Woods did not seem to be able to do Dr Sharp justice and Cyclone passed him at the last furlong Carrie F was close in at the last 150 yards but squeezed in on the rails her chance of winning was destroyed destroyedGeorge destroyed George Krats Rats won by the smallest of margins from Tranby Tabby the pair running locked the last sixteenth The Tory who ran third came from ten lengths behind the leaders at the last quarter Barataria Barratries was second to the half mile ground after getting away on the extreme out ¬ side Alvarado Allargando only stayed in the front rank for three furlongs Knight on the winner rode a star finish as Conley Coney on Tranby Tabby had him almost pinned on the fence the last fifty yards There was a delay of twentyfive twenty minutes at the post in the third race Souchon Soupcon broke quickest but Frank Bell got to and passed her at once and coming on won away off Elsie G was third to the betting ring where Aprils Lady came from behind and beat Souchon Soupcon who finished third for the place Helens Pet and Barney Saal Sal were the only others in sight As Frank Bells time had shown the track fit for the breaking of records much was expected from the owners handicap The only thing developed however was a great surprise as Found going to the post at 6 to 1 straight and even money for place won by five lengths and ran all the way well in hand Mary Black opened a gap of four lengths on Found around the first turn and maintained this lead for threeeighths where John Bright was two Iclgths Cloths behind Fouud Found The latter gained every stride from now on at the half had nearly caught up and passed to the fiont font at the five eighths John Bright well whipped out beat Mary Black four lengths lengthsThe lengths The best fivehorse firehouse race of the meeting was that won by Indra Indrawn as midway the straight all the horses were nearly abreast Indra Indrawn backed from 4 down to 2 to 1 led up the back stretch Draw Lad closely attending Nathanson Nathan was never worse than third and so finished Into the home stretch J Reiff Riff tookBraw kookaburra Lad on the outside of Indra Indrawn and the favorite led to within a sixteenth of the wire where again passed by Indra Indrawn he made another determined bid and the finish was a most exciting one Inconstancy made lier flier run at the last threesixteenth threes and Lew Blew Hopper came up so fast from behind that Brenock Redneck wins was the cry cryThe scythe The sport of an almost perfect racing day wound up when Diggs Digs came home a winner The public had bet on this last race as if the likelihood was that no other would be seen in Chicago in some time and Banks Cregier Craggier bade farewell with Auld Lang Syne Sydney Sangamon Seagram was heavily played by the Kentuckians and being a bad actor was excused from coming to the paddock The best he ever showed was third Our Gertie Erie made the pace with Treopia Tropical second and with Sangamon Seagram quite outran the others to the home stretch Tenole Ennoble looked all over a winner at the last eighth but in a rattling race to the judges stand Diggs Digs and George H Ketcham Ketch came from the ruck truck and ran one two while Afamada Alameda third was close up Sangamon Seagram was boxed in on the rails and Burns could not get through The last race was run at 630 p m Lady Callahan was left stand ¬ ing King at the post postFrank positron Frank Bell tied the track record for a two yearold earl 471 seconds held by Billy Mason who ran it last season at Harlem Frank Bells per ¬ formance Forman is the better of the two he carrying
