Page [1] Harlem's Good Racing. HARLEMS HAREMS GOOD RACING RACINGThe Racing The ozone in the atmosphere of as beautiful a day as ever graced any country worked its charm yesterday at Harlem as elsewhere The sky was cloudless the air cool and the breezes were of the whitecap variety Animation was the condition everywhere and even the dingy dirty colors of certain horse owners looked fresh and bright quite in keeping with the fact that heavens washtub is the only one they ever see The track had dried out considerably and having been well cared for was safe Yet the time of the horses was slow because of the double event of heavy going and a long jour ¬ ney NE caused by keeping to the outside of the course when rounding the turns The card was a most excellent one although the only long dis dais ¬ tance stance race outside of the stake feature of the day was the one mile dash which closed the program Of fortyeight fortnight entries for the six races only four were scratched but one of the absentees from the handicap was the highclass highlands stake colt of Hops Laudeman Laundryman Onomastus Conformists flis flies owner possibly did not like the impost of s pounds which was probably reasonable when the class of the others is taken into ac ¬ count The Commercial selling stakes 1 18 miles for 3yearolds and upward promised to be a sure enough horse race the starters be ¬ ing King a trifle higher of class than the ordinary selling plater platter There was 1120 in sight for the winner 200 for the second and 100 for the third horse High water mark of the meeting was reached both as to siza size of crowd and num numb ¬ ber beer of bookmakers of the latter there were twentythree twenty regular and two field fieldForm fieldfare Form players took a short price against Afamada Alameda and if she had been lucky enough to get away in the front rank they would have cashed at even money Redskin J Koiff Skiff up dodged backwards at the post and ran oneeighth neigh finally being caught by the assistant starter He was practically left at the post but ran kindly Brightie Brighten S and Governor Sheehau Sheehan also bothered Dwyer who however effected a reasonably good start Treopia Tropical and Moroni Moronic were first away but Brightio Brighton S ran past them and led on the far turn but Plantain soon took command and was not again headed winning in a drive from Afamada Alameda who coming from behind ate up horses through the last eighth Jed Waldo Weald rode Moroni Moronic well until the last sixteenth where lapped on Plantain his fathers horse if held together might have won but boylike boxlike Jed went to the whip and was lucky to get the third money as Little Alarm who ran in the colors of her new owner Dr Rowell Roswell was right there Fremont ran a quarter in a breakaway Treopia Tropical was stopped through interference by Moroni Moronic MoroniThe Moonlit The talent received a facer in the second race as of the two favorites Paul Qriggs Rigs was never bolter bolster than fourth while Abe Furst Furs always oc ¬ cupied cupid a position in the last division To an excellent start even Meddler getting off nicely the first trio to show in front was composed of the hordes that finished one two three and these outran the others so that on the upper irn iron Madrilene Marlene third was several open lengths r ad of the back bunch Montgomery led from the post so the last eighth Amy Wade there heading him and winning with plenty to spare The winner had been taken closer in at the last turn than any horse that has run since the rain came some days ago and McNickles Canticles judgment proved to bo correct as by this ma ¬ neuver never Amy Wade won the race On the other hand Aker Baker on Madrilene Marlene went rather wide on the turn turnThe turtle The bookmakers having had two good breaks laid liberal odds for the handicap Hanlight Fanlight opening at 4 was dropped to 11 to 5 at one stage while Queen of Song jumped from 6 to 5 up to Hanlights Fanlights price Boney Bony Boy like all of Virginia Bradleys Bradley horses landed at the false price of 5 to 1 To a fine start Queen of Song broke quickest for once had plain sailing and never extended she won the race from post to finish Mazo Matzo off second soon fell away to last position where he finished Boney Bony Boy third at the start ran a fair second but swerved slightly at the betting fing fling Ex ¬ cursion cursing had no trouble in securing third place from Frances D Hanlight Fanlight was never in the race raceDr racer Dr Sheppard opened favorite at 2 to 1 for the Commercial Stakes David Tenny Teeny second choice at 3 to 1 but intermediately the price of each horse was 11 to 5 The other three star ¬ ters tears were backed strongly and it was thought that the last horse was as hard to pick as the first one As it turned out the race was merely a match between Dr Sheppard and David Tenny Teeny and as this resulted in a dead heat the owners Pat Dunne and Fred Foster must be given credit for being able handicappers as selling racers are essentially owners handicaps At the second attempt a splendid start was made Passing the stand Dr Sheppard led by two lengths the others lying abreast Rounding into the back stretch Dr Sheppard led with David Tenny Teeny second close up Cherry Leaf third So they ran the next quarter passing which Dunois Dubois last was yet close enough to have a winning chance Candelaria Candelabra had here moved up from last place and turning for home he ran third Dunois Dubois and Cherry Leaf were al ¬ ready beaten Bloss Loss on Dr Sheppard came somewhat wide on the turn and as David Tenny Teeny was lapped on the outside there was some out ¬ cry after the race as to Dunnes Dunes horse being car ¬ ried reid out He never was interfered with how ¬ ever and at the last sixteenth if anything had the better of the Doctor Bloss Loss now began a determined ride and whipping and slash ¬ ing King the jockeys worked hard all the way home the horses being so nearly locked that the boys shoulders all but touched Dr Sheppard seen to gain a trifle was called the winner by some excited personages but when the horses were fifty yards from the wire many voices raised the cry It will be a dead heat And so Colonel Clark decided The stakes were split and both horses sold Cande Candle Jaria Aria looked dangerous when just inside the straight he being on the extreme outside but Everett when close to the leaders later on in drawing his whip let his horse swerve and Candelaria Candelabra finished nearer the inside fence than the leaders and was beaten several lengths The others wore pulled up Colonel Clark stopped all the boys as they made their way to the post postAbuse potable Abuse as usual cantered home But he did not have it all his own way at all times Dave Waldo Weald led him into the home stretch then Bannockburn Bannock came along and gave him an argument the threeyearold lasting however only to the final eighth Jolly Roger a poor third beat Dave Waldo Weald Richard J was left at the post Kings Highway was a million to one shot shotThe soothe The sixth race amounted to nothing Donna Rita leading all the way Molo Moo took it easy up the back stretch but was second by four lengths from Elidad Elided third others beaten off Elidad Elided was last at the far turn William McGuigan Michigan mounted a stool in the Harlem paddock at 130 pm Saturday and umbrella in hand proceeded to sell the follow ¬ ing King horses Elizabeth R cost as a yearling 500 Banish cost as a yearling 750 Cora R for whom 1000 was refused this spring Cui Ui ¬
