Page [1] Big Hawthorne Fields. BIG HAWTHOKNE HAWTHORNE FIELDS FIELDSHawthorne Hawthorne racing yesterday gave a large num numb ¬ ber beer of owners the chance to start their horses and that is about all there is to bo said where the card furnished was made up of a three fourths dash for maiden threeyearolds a pair of selling events at five eighths for two yearolds earls two 1000 selling races at one mile and a hurdle race having six starters including tho thou twelveyearold twelve horse Hercules Of the seventytwo seventy entries only eight were scratched and the huge fields could add nothing to the sport but on the contrary act only as the medium for the inevitable discontent occasioned by straggling starts with possibly many horses left at the post That Mr Bruen Braun did as well as he aid reflects great honor upon his quick per ¬ ceptive captive faculties patience and coolbeadedness coldheartedness Where in the east the starting machine finds disfavor here in the west its use is more and more commended and that the general desire is leaning toward the abolition of the recall flig fling simply accentuates the difference in tem ¬ perament prepayment of tlie lie people of the east and west Jfcn Fn a LyWio Lynwood soa soak they hare time t losnr loner here we aro aero looking for quick action actionThe action The wonderful change in the weather pro ducod deuced a day mnch munch given to the unpacking of winter wraps and overcoats The first touh touch of Chicagos Chicago absolutely perfect autumn weather had come The track was heavy and holding dry and lumpy by Friday it will have resumed its best condition The crowd was below the averige average Yet twenty regular and two field books were on onThe Monte The first race sienalized signalized the end of the trav travel ¬ ail of W H Daniel who has struggled for long months to get brackets for Cutter and after the race Walter Gum the trainer felt one hun ¬ dred dared pounds lighter Canova Canoga the favorite at i to 1 rau Frau out in front attended by La Cham Chan ¬ pagne pane and the pair led the way to the last six ¬ teenth tenth where Cutter third after the first quar quark ¬ ter tear had been covered came on and won easily from Canova Canoga Friskal Frisk who came from the rear ran third while close up were Agnes C La Champagne and Sokombeo Spokane The others were badly strung out at the finish finishWalter Finnish Walter Gum made a redletter relater day of it by throwing Vie Lamont Lament across the plate thus winning for the stable two consecutive races Falomacita Valencia Falsetto Jennie June was the hottest thing known hereabouts in months and with J Reiff Riff up was backed from 8 to 1 down to 3 to 1 and at the latter price much money was wagered The good thing managed to run second Possibly if off head and head with Vie Lamont Lament she might have won but as it was when Falomacita Valencia got up with fifty yards to cover Gums filly ran right away from her The winner was off in the front rank and only Arthur McKnight Mocking and Etta P gave her a game the first quarter Then Nora C came along but could never get to the leader The speed shown by Falomacita Valencia at the last sixteenth post was of high order Nora C finished third and Etta P fourth No others close Green Witch Monongah Monograph and Florence Fink were practically left at the post Thorpe fiddled for a running start with Es i nonage in the third race but Bruen Braun is now at tha than bat and unlike Caldwell is on to Thorpes Thorps pitching so the favorite got off with the others Good Hope going out in front was always tagged by Espionage who when let down at the betting ring went on and won as she pleased Good Hope beating Cora Havill Hail II a filly nearly always third by three open lengths Cora Havill Hail II was two lengths better than Stamina who was lapped by Iris and Our Nellie Martha Fox received the backing of some smart people at ICO CO to 1 Pat Cleburne Claiborne wa tLrd trod cl se up at the la = t quarter Tusculum Truculent a newcomer at the track seemed to have had a bad trip in reaching Chicago both as concerns the betting ring signs and his lack of speed Going to the front at once he ran a quarter in the lead and then began to back up Locnst Locust Blossom led from the quarter to the last eighth Hosi Hoi and Umbrella always lying closely by her necktie the others being beaten off in tbe tube first half mile Hosi Hoi was on the inside rounding intothe instate home stretch but as Locust Blossom bore out he followed her and finally finished in the middle of the track Locust Blossom quit to nothing when she did quit while Hosi Hoi and Umbrella ran a pretty finish clear home For many jumps they were only heads apart and Hosi Hoi eventually won both going stiougly stoutly at the finish Locust Blossom struggling along was third thirdJumping chirruping Jumping races are supposed to cause excite ¬ ment meant and Uncle Jim was the horse to furnish the incident of the day Stumbling at the sec ¬ ond bond jump and throwing Welch his jockey the old campaigner timed himself nicely and lying off to the last jump there hurried up and just landed himself at the wire in front of the win ner near of the face Nobilis Mobiles The latter had gone out with Hercules the pair getting a lead of some lengths over the others headed by La Colina Colin at the second jump about onehalf Neal mile away from the start Nobilis Mobiles well handled appeared to have the race ever at his mercy Hercules stayed up well for threequarters treasurers of a mile then as at the upper turn La Colina Colin dropped back the issue was left to Troil Roil Nobilis Mobiles and Michael G The last named had been taken back at the start but from the head of the straight to the last jump eighth post he ran as if he had a winning chance Hov Hove ever from here out it was easy for Nobiiis who won punched out unnecessarily from Troil Roil Michael G landing third thirdRedskin hairdressing Redskin a horse opening at 4tol then ad ¬ vanced vance to 7 and knocked down to 4 to 1 was left standing still at the post Marzella Mazola the j favorite was bumped when the barrier arose but she soon got on her stride and went on after Branch who was leading The favorite took the track when it best suited J Reiff Riff her pilot and although expected to stop she ran under a pull to the wire and won easily from Branch Prince of India was third around the first turn but Con Reagan soon passed him and ran home in third place two good lengths ahead of Pitfall The remainder of the horses were strung out all the way wayHothersall Hothersall Others who rode Umbrella lodged a claim of foul against Rose on Hosi Hoi but this was disallQwed disallowed by the judges after Harry White the patrol judge had been consulted I The latter official said that at the turn for home nothing occurred and that while he saw some bumping farther down the stretch that if any j i horses chance was injured it was that of Locust Blossom Sam Wagner saw Umbrella warm up and saying he was good went and bet heavily on his former pet I i Hawthorne Pooling.
