Page [1] The Hawthorne Races. THE HAWTHOKNE HAWTHORNE RACES Sixtythree Sixty horses started in the six races at Hawthoine Hawthorne yesterday where eighteen book ¬ makers posted the odds Virginia Carroll is a promising addition to the ring as he fear ¬ lessly Lesley grasps his chalk no matter what con ¬ fronts him by way of a bunch of maidens and has mighty little use for his rubber wisely figuring that one horse is about as good as an ¬ other in such classes Therefore yesterday the block men got to work quickly on the first race having a new man to set the pace where before his coming too frequently valuable time was wasted waiting to see what the other fel feel ¬ low would do doThe doTe The day was pleasant the sun failiag failing to show and the regulars were out in full force They would attend a racetrack even if the band was the only attraction and bet whether or not the cornet player hit the right key The track had dried out considerably but the going was very heavy heavyThe heavy The sixteen maidens were dispatched for the opening race so well that only Pee Wee and an other were entirely out of it Billy Magranes Migraines La Juanita Junta Emperor of Norfolk Ruby Payne a nce nice went to the front and led to the final fghth fight where getting into the deep mud she stopped badly Flirtatiou Flirtatious had raced away sec j ond bond but was displaced first by Princess Murphy who quit quicker than La Juanita Junta and later by Sidtilla Scintilla Joining the latter at the betting j ring Flirtation won in a hard drive from Sid ¬ tilla till the pair finishing lengths ahead of the ruck truck headed by Stella Horses not mentioned were never dangerous dangerousBruen dangerous Bruen Braun made a Oilman start in the second race the horses being sent away straggling with Mr Easton standing still at the post A furlongs run showed two divisions of the field the first composed of six horses being five open lengths ahead of the second bunch At the half mile ground Blanche and Chauncey Chancery Fisher were first and second but Moch Mooch went out by two clear lengths on the turn and so led to the last hundred yards wheie wheel Julia Hazel on the path on the extreme outside got up and won with a trifle in hand Moch Mooch beat Nannie Nannies Davis for the place Chauncey Chancery Fisher led the bunch in the rear he being five lengths behind Nannie Nannies Davis At her last start Julia Hazel had been practically left at the post postFor pastor For the sake of variety the horses in the third race ran one two three by the betting Gra Graf ziella Zillah and Eed Deed Qidd Quid made the pace to the last turn where Bradleys Bradley horse quit and Her Favor and Heigh High Ho camo cameo up Graziella Grazie was beaten at the last eighth and Her Favor headed Heigh High Ho who ran close to the inside rail Wishards Wishers filly showed the greater gameness beating Her Favor handily at the finish Graziella Grazie was third and Star and Crescent fourth It was another straggling start startAny tartan Any bookmaker dropped in from England or Australia who caring nothing for and know ¬ ing King nothing of the merits of the horses would get rich around Chicago nowadays laying against favorites In fell Lena at 30 to 1 in the fourth race to prove this assertion Barney Schreibers Schreiber boy J Ward rode her but after the race Barney said How could I play such a jyo yo filly For all I know she has been running iu the bush I know as well as another us fel feel ¬ lows ought to take the short money but we all get to trying to pick winners and so I guess no ¬ body is getting very fat because of the success of long shots Lena went out in front and Dare II tagging her All thought that Huffmans Huffman horse could pass on when he pleased As on the upper turn all others showed to be beaten the backers of Dare II became ubilant jubilant the more so as Lena was second into the homestretch But J Ward had evidently noticed that Heigh High Ho had found good hard footing on the inside and taking Lena there while Rutter Ruttier on Dare II came down the center of ihe he track the filly gained rapidly and was ho ked up with her rival at the last sixteenth from which point she proved to be the better stayer slayer and so won with Dare II lapped on In a drive Charley Christy beat David Tenny Teeny third nearly all the way and Topmast was close behind Bridgeton Bridgetown was quite out of the race at the end of a quarters run and Judge Steadman Seaman was left standing at the post After the race there was plenty of information relat relate ¬ ing King to the fact that Lena while in California had won several good races racesThe raciest The best race of the day was the fifth on the card Coley Cooley Ullman Pullman came np from St Louis to back Miss Marion and this crack twoyearold toehold filly was only beaten by the good class horse Timemaker Tidemark whose last race presaged a return to his best form Mr Bruen Braun here retrieved himself and sent all the horses from the barrier so closely together that all were lapped on May W broke quick ¬ est but at once joined by Timemaker Tidemark and Dave Waldo Weald she must have been taken back for no horses could so quickly outrun her as did this pair Dave Waldo Weald shut up in a jiffy and Miss Marion passed him as also did Timemaker Tidemark At the upper turn the twoyear twofer old was leading by three lengths with Schorrs Scorers horse the only one left in the race J McDon Macedon ¬ ald auld was working on Timemaker Tidemark threosizteenths from home and his horse coming on strongly caught and passed Miss Marion before the last sixteenth was passed Timemaker Tidemark won pulling up by several lengths Miss Marion lengths better than Oleska Coleslaw third she beating May W in a drive Plantain was fifth Theresa H completely outclassed finished an eighth out outAgain outraging Again did Mr Bruen Braun effect a good start King Bermuda went out racing with Mary Kin sella ella and did not shake her off for fiveeighths firefights At the head of the homestretch Borden always close up took after the favorite but driven hard to catch up he not only lost first but sec ¬ ond bond money as Tom Calverc Calve beat him on the post Mary Kinsella Knell was a fair fourth Bai Bali risso frisson off in the rear was third at tLe tale middle of the upper turn he finished next to abso abs ¬ lutely lately Prestar Restart was away back on the upper turn turnJ turn J H McCormick yesterday received a tele stele ¬ gram from Mr Fleischmann Freshman saying Walsh will reach Chicago Wednesday noon over the Michigan Central This means that Fleisch Flemish manns mans trio of twoyearolds toeholds will be on hand for Saturdays Stallion Stakes at Hawthorne HawthorneBarney Hawthorne Barney Schreiber was happy He said Miss Marion will soon be herself again Did you see how she ran away from those horses Well when she is good no road is too long for her She is yet a trifle short shortThe short The entry of Judge Steadman Seaman will be refused until the horse is properly schooled He dodged in and out around Topmast at the post like a trick animal Notes Of The Turf. GOSSIP OF THE TURF A recent issue of the Cincinnati Commercial Tribune says There was an echo of the recent meeting of the Turf Congress in this city last week which is proof that considerable illfeeling pilfering has been engendered among the magnates who were present It will be recalled that the Turf Congress turned down Manager Frank Fowlers kind invitation to attend the races at the New ¬ port track and also drove an additional nail in the cofBn cob of the foreign book Manager Fow Flow ¬ ler leer of the Newport track was heartily in favor of returning the foreign book but found few if any of the Turf Congress members who agreed with him L P Tarlton Carlton who was the presid preside ¬ ing King judge at the recent Newport meeting was unalterably against the foreign book and emphatically stated that he would not vote for its return Thursday night Mr Fowler met Judge Tarlton Carlton at a prominent hotel and took him to task for not favoring the return of the foreign book at the recent Turf Congress meeting Judge Tarlton Carlton stated that he was always against the foreign book and that under no circumstances would he have favored its return Mr Fowler then informed Judge Tarlton Carlton that in the future the Newport track would not re ¬ quire his services as its presiding judge judgeThis judgeships This was all that passed between the gentle ¬ men and there was no heated controversy as was reported in turf circles last night nightAt night At the Newport track yesterday Mr Fowler was very bitter in his denunciation of the methods of the Turf Congress and stated that in the future he would run his track to suit him ¬ self and without regard for the Turf Congress CongressJudge Congress Judge Tarlton Carlton was eminently correct in his stand The foreign book was an abomina abdominal ¬ tion ion Any racetrack that cannot prosper with ¬ out its evil profits has no legitimate reason for existence A special from New York says In all proba probe ¬ bility the march of progress and the grounds be cut up into streets and building lots The property cost the late John A Morris 1500000 His two sons have to an extent the money making instinct and at the expiration of their lease to the Westchester Esthete Racing Asso Assoc ¬ ciation caption it is authoritatively stated that they will abandon the maintenance of Morris Park entirely cut streets through it and go into the building line on an extensive scale The grounds are in the finest and most desirable part of Westchester Esthete and real estate there now commands a high figure and is constantly on Saturday the 15th last seven furlongs of the Withers Mile In the Rancho del Paso on Saturday Martimas Martians and Jean Beraud Bead will meet at even weights 122 pounds and as Mr Hendrie Henries will endeavor to get a jockey that will keep his colt straight the meeting between the pair will be most in ¬ teresting teething as both will go to the post in the pink of condition conditionThe condition The mutuels mutes are on at Latonia Antonia but the books are on also With the two systems in operation at the same time on an American race track it can always be depended upon that the bulk of the betting patronage will go to the books even if they are conducted on the contemned syndicate plan The reason is not far to seek The American bettor is an impatient creature and when he bets always wishes to know what he is to receive if he wins In making a book bet he knows this the moment he makes up his mind to bet In the mutuel mutual system he makes his bet blindly and cannot know what his profit will be until the horses are off and the boxes closed That is all there is to it As a matter ot fact the mutuels mutes at Latonia Antonia have steadily paid a much greater rate of odds than the bookmakers have laid but the patronage goes to the books notwith nitwit ¬ standing With Pitnlico Pinion frozen out by the Jockey Club in favor of Bennings Jennings of course Mr Howland Holland ought to offer some encouragement to breeding to stand as a reason why thoroughbred sport finds a richer and more prolific soil at Washing ¬ ton than at Baltimore He is going to do it He is
