CHICAGO, TUESDAY, JANTJAKY 3, 1899. PHICE, 5 CENTS Gossip of the Turf GOSSIP OF THE TURF. Buckwa's record breaking peformance in the Athenian Club Cap Stakes Saturday was a fine example of higk speed sustained over a long distance of ground, but its chief value is in showing how easily the horses of today can wipe out all the long distance records made in the days when sprinting was in the main confined to the two-year-olds. This is not because the horses of today are better, it would be absurd to compare old Buckwa with a Springbok or a Hindoo, but it is because of the marvelous advance in the science of track making and the ceaseless care exercised by the track masters of today in keeping their tracks in condition that enables a horse to travel over their elastic velvety surfaces at the very highest rate their muscular .endowment can propel them. It must be remembered that not only Buckwa eclipsed the long standing Springbok-Preakness record, but that each of his three competitors probably did the same thing, certainly Daisy F. and Veloz did. Eagene Leigh will at once send to the track at Lauisvillo twenty-five head of two-year-olds from La Belle Farm, wh6ro th6y have winteied and been broken They are all colts but one. May Hempstead belongs to Messrs. Headley & Norton, and the Order colt to Mr. H. P. Head-ley. Mr. Leigh's stable will winter at Louisville, and, after takingpart in the Memphis and Louisville meetings, probably go east. The Thoroughbred Records. J. V. Hand has shipped King Bermuda, Ella Penzance and othor horses to Tampa, Fla., to take part in the projected meeting. Owners who desire to race on the big tracks hereafter, shonld be careful about taking a hand in winter racing except over authorized tracks or they may suddenly discover that they have become outlaws. Racing at Tampa comes under the jurisdiction of the Jockey Club and if authorized by that body would ba all right, but no notice of such authorization has been promulgated as yet. It is also said that raciug is to be over a half-mile track which would come in conflict with a strict Turf Congress rule. His Highness leads the sires of American winners for 1898, with a total of $73,092. His winning get, seven in number, won seventeen races, and is led by Jean Beraud with $65,897. Hanover is second in the list with $72,060 and twenty-one winners of fifty-three races Hamburg, $21,185 and Ben Holladay, 10,885, lead the Hanover brigade. Colonel Dan Burns got tired of the disappointing running of the highly bred counterfeit, Colonel Dan, and a few days ago presented him to James Conway. Colonel Dan is by Salvator Fleurette, and as Fleurette is a full sister to Firenzi and the dam of Fleur de Lis, great things were naturally expected from him, but in vain. There is some talk of a strong effort being made in the near future looking to the reinstatement of little Earl Cochran, who has been down nearly two years for a ride the Ingleside judges did not like on Little Cripple, which they apparently expected to beat such a good horse as Ostler Joe. Jockey McDonald, set down here last summer, has applied to Captain Rees for reinstatement, but has mot with no moro encouragement than is involved in the advice to the boy that only the stewards can now do anything for him. It is rumored that the meetings over the big Now York tracks this year may be continuous, instead of being interspersed with non-racing days. By this means more open dates for the Saratoga meeting may be provided. ' Page [2] KhiLY kAilNG FOkH m ..AND.. It has been decided to send Macy to Memphis for h well deserved rest This sterling racehorse has had a long arduous campaign, and his running at New Orleans was such as to plainly show stateness.
