CHICAGO, WEDNESDAY, JAlSrTJABY 4, 1899. PRICE, 5 CE3TTS American Horses in England AMERICAN HORSES IS ENGLAND. American-bred horses cut a vary respectable figure in England last year, though successful in capturing only one of what are considered the leading events of the English turf. The stake referred to is the Middle Park Plate, won by Caiman. Most of the success achieved fell either to Mr. Pierre Lorillard's separate stable or to that in which Tie was jointly interested with Lord William Beresford. The Horse Fancier has compiled the following account of the doings of all the American horses that won during the year. Mr. Lorillard's stable showing was as follows : Races. Amt. , Myakka, ch. f, 2, by Sensation-Magnetic 4 $11,272.50 Dominie II., b. or br. c, 2, by SensationDolores 4 8,450 00 Elfin, b. c, 3, by Sensation Equality 4 7,195.00 Sandia, br,g, 4, by The Sailor Prince Saluda 1 4,30.00 Chinook, br. f, 3, by Sensation-Breeze 1 4,050 00 Illogic, ch. g, 2, by The Sailor Prince Illogo 2 2,975.00 Draco ,ch. g, 4, by The Sailor Prince Darya 1 1,475.00 Pascola, b. f, 2, by Simon Magus Perception 2 185XT Bayard II., b. g, 3, by The Bard-Maumee 1 975.00 :Lakota,ch.f,2, by Pontiac LuellaB 1 720.00 Belisama, br. f, 4, by Sensation-Blush 1 705.00 Eleven winners 22 $43,452.50 The winnings of the American bred horses in the Beresford stable were as follows : Races. Glancing at the more important successes, we' find that in Mr. Loriliard's lot Myakka won the Lancaster Nursery at Manchester, the First October and Prendergast at Newmarket, besides dead-heating for the Great Sapling Plate at Sandown Park. Dominie II. scored his principal successes in the Exeter, Granby Plate and Chereley at Newmarket. Elfin won the Bur-well at Newmarket, the St. Albans Handicap at Nottingham, and the Newmarket October Welter Handicap. Sandia won the second year of the Thirty-fifth New Biennial at Ascot, of which he also won the first running in 1897. Chinook won the Nassau Stakes, the big filly event of Goodwood week. Illogic's chief success was in the valuable Waterloo Selling Nursery Handicap at Kempton Park, while Draco's ' victory for Mr. Lorillard was in the Autumn i Selling Plate at Hurst Park. Of Lord Beresford's American-bred winners, , Caiman is easily first in importance, as well as i in money won, by his victory in the Middle i Park Plate. Previous to this, he had won a very - nice stake, the Glearwell, earlier in the same i week, and a fortnight later he ran Frontier to a head for the Dewhurst Plate at nine pounds i disadvantage in the weights. Tarolinta's brace i of successes was' scored in rapid succession at ; , ' i , i i - i i i ; Lowes, where she won the Astley Stakes and Priory Stakes on successive days at the Summer Meeting. Diakka won only the Esher (Handicap) Stakes at Sandown Park in the spring, as ! the handicappers took good care of him. Jiffy II. scored her principal success in the Eton Handicap at Windsor. Mr. August Belmont won three races with the American-bred three-ynar-old Bridegroom II., by Rayon d'Or St. Bridget, by St. Simon. The colt's most important success for the. "scarlet, maroon sleeves, black cap" was the Peveril of the Peak Stakes at Derby. The total value of Bridegroom II. 's wins for Mr. Belmont was $3,685, but, as we all know, when the colt passed into tin hands of Mr. L. da Rothschild, being thereafter known as Golden Bridge, she scored throe important successes in the First and Second Limekiln at Newmarket and the Lancashire Handicap at Manchester. Mr. Richard Croker won the Hassocks Plate at Brighton with the American bred two-year-old filly Wantage Belle, by Loyalist Wanda. The race was worth $930. Mr. Croker also won the Exning Plate at Newmarket with his colt Knickerbocker, who, being by Dobbins Flirt, has a pedigree thoroughly reminiscent of the early days of the "Yale blue, gold tassel," in this country, although Knickerbocker was sired and foaled in England. Mr. James R. Koene won the Dullingham Plate, worth $2,150, with his four-year-old colt St. Cloud II., by Candlemas Belle of Maynard, at the Newmarket Second July Meeting. Sensation's get won as follows : Horses, Age. Races. Amt. Brooklyn, N, Y., Jan. 3. There are forty-eight oatries ia tha Brooklyn Handicap up to date with probably six more to come. H. D. McIntyke, Secretary, Brooklyn Jockey Club. Horses at Lexington HORSES AT LEXINGTON. Eastin & Larabie's lot are Ben Halladay, 6; MacLeod of Dare, 3; Kinley Mack, 3; Koumise, 3, and the following two-year-olds: Chestnut filly, by Hanover Mollie L, full sister to Ben Holladay ; chestnut filly, by Star Ruby May, by-Falsetto; bay colt, by Order Tongesee ; chestnut colt, by Watercress Racemede, by Hindoo; chestnut colt, by Gplden Garter Bella B., and bay colt, by Golden Garter Songstress by Luke Blackburn. Of these youngsters I was mpst impressed with the Songstress colt, which is a half brother to Kinley Mack. He is not on a large scalo, but has plenty of length and is a lathy, wiry, bloodlike colt, clean limbed and looks' as if he is bound to be very smart. The Racemede colt is a big framed, big boned and very powerful looking colt, a little bit coarse, perhaps, but a fine type of a lengthy, well developed youngster and one that may train into a good horse in time. 'The Hanover Mollie L. filly, which is a full sister to the long-distance champion, Ben Holladay, bears not the faintest resemblance to her famous brother, and is light-framea'and rather weedy. The filly out of May H. is a lengthy, rakish sort and very speedy looking. Capt. S. S. Brown's lot are Manadoree, 3, and the following two-year-olds, all by Troubadour: Bay colt, out of Mona, by Buckden; bay colt, out of Sunbeam (dam of Daily America) ; brown gelding, out of Sunlight; bay filly, out of Sen-orita, and bay filly, out of Eukonia. The Mona colt, which is short legged, well furnished, like his dam, is a hardy, tear and wear sort and looks certain to prove useful. The Sunbeam colt has more quality and finish to him than his brother, Daily America, but while he is a racy sort he has neither the substance nor the hard game look of the Realization winner of 1893. The Senorita filly is a smooth turned thing, but lacks both the range and substance of her famous dam. J. E. McDonald's four, all two-year-olds, are, bay colt, by Deceiver Seafood, by King Ban; bay filly, by Candlemas Enquiry ; bay filly, by St. Savior Mamie B., by King Ban, and bay colt, by Candlemas The Belle. This colt, which is out of Rensselaer's dam, is, I think, one of the best looking sons of Candlemas I hare ever seen. He is a lengthy, nicely balanced horse and full of quality. I saw him out at exercise and he is a beautiful actioned colt, with a long reach and traveling close to the ground. I was very much impressed with this colt. He is a decidedly mannerly, high class looking youngster, and while he has not been asked a whole lot he has shown enough to make his trainer feel very sweet on him. As he is well entered in stake events, I shall watch his developments with considerable interest, and I will be much disappointed if he does not prove one of the best of the get of a horse whose success in the stud I predicted years ago. The Candlemas filly, ont of inquiry, is a rakish, speedy looking miss, and the colt out of Seafood is a neat, smooth turned, useful sort. "Kelston" in Morning Telegraph. Gossip of the Turf GOSSIP OF THE TURF. Friday's San Francisco Chronicle says: "Vicksburg" Wood, well known on every racetrack in the country, is in trouble. "Vicksburg" for the past couple of years has acted as betting commissioner for Dan Burns or Clarence Waterhouse, and sometimes placed a bet for President Tom Williams. He enjoyed the confidence of his employers and was liked among racegoers. Yesterday Deputy Sheriff Lane arrested "Vicksburg" at the track and took him to the county jail in Oakland, where the charge of suspicion of felony is marked opposite his name. It is alleged that "Vicksburg" bet "markers" with several bookmakers to the extent of $300, claiming that the bets were for Tom Williams. The president of the Jockey Club cannot recall making any such bets and thinks that "Vicksburg" has been speculating on his own account. It is hard to understand how "Vicksburg" would have benefited, as the books do not usually pay tha "markers" to betting commissioners. George C. Bennett has fourteen well bred 2-year-olds in schooling at Memphis, of which Joe Wheeler, by Iroquois Hildegarde, is at present deemed the pick. His list is as follows : Chestnut colt, by Fiddlesticks Niniveh. Chestnut colt, by Meddler Frolic Grace II. Bay colt, by De Beauvoir La Sorella. Bay eolt, by Ben Strome or Hindoo Pert (dam of Logan). Bay colt, by Iroquois Hildegarde. Bay colt, by Quicklime Monte Rosa (brother to Millstream). Bay colt, by Longstreot Highland Lassie. Chestnut colt, by Loyalist Cantolet. Chestnut colt, by Loyalist Irony. Bay colt, by Cheviot Khiva. Bay colt, by Candlemas Formosa. Chestnut colt, by Prime Minister Eliza Carr. Bay filly, by Albert Iroqueena. Bay filly, by Wadsworth Norma. The Gentlemen's Cup at Ingloside must be won three times before it becomes the property of any of the competitors. Walter Hobart and , Frank Skinner have each been twice first for the coveted trophy. The decisive contest will probably take place during the coming two weeks at Ingleside and speculation as to the result is already strong. Notes of the Turf NOTES OF THE TURF. It is given out that hereafter the New Orleans over-night handicaps will be $400 in value instead of $250, as heretofore, and it is hinted that perhaps the other purses may be raised to $306 presently, a token that the club is doing well and willing to give a slice of its prosperity to the horae owners. An average of twenty-one books shows that the betting ring at Oakland is a thriving institution. Page [2] DAILY RACING FORM ..AND..
