CHICAGO, THURSDAY, JANUARY 5, 1899. PBICE75 CENTS Brooklyn Handicap Entries BROOKLYN HANDICAP ENTRIES. "Best entry yon ever saw," is what Secretary Mclntyre telegraphed last night abont the Brooklyn Jockey Club stakes that closed Monday. In view of the splendid array of good horses published here as entries to the Brooklyn Handicap, he may well afford to feel jubilant. Fifty-one are here named as against forty-three at a similar date of the closing of entries last year. Several entries drifted in then after the iirst publication of entries as will no doubt be the case this year, but substantially the list is complete and a glance will show that it comprehends nearly all of the high-class handicap material of the year. It is noticeable that such very fast mares as Briar Sweet, Imp, Napamax, Azucena, Lambent, and Miss Marion are among the entries. In Tiew of the detraction to which the sex has been subject for a year er so it would be a touch of horse jnstice if one of this swift sextette should carry off the glory and honor of the race, a difficult thing, however, for a mare at . such an early, date as that annually set for the decision of the Brooklyn. It is evident from the presence of Jean Berand, Ahom, Autumn, Filigrane, Hungarian, Diminutive, Greatland, Kingdon, Mr. Clay, King Barleycorn, Marble-head, Miss Marion and Ordnung that owners have not overlooked the conceded fact that conditions are such that three-year-oids will have unusual opportunities in the big handicaps this year. The entries are as follows: Horses. Age. Horses. Age. Algol 5 Ahom 8 Autumn 3 Aeucena 4! Banastar 4 Ben Holladay 6 Box 5 Briar Sweet 4 Candleblack 4 Charentus 5 Diminutive 3 Don d'Oro 5 F. F. The Tampa Meeting THE TAMPA MEETING. New Orleans will have a rival in the winter racing game, although for the present it does net promise to be a formidable one. All arrangements have been completed for a winter meeting at Tampa, Fla., and the first race will be run January 14 over the track, which is a half-mile affair. Yesterday George I. Palmer, of Tampa, arrived in the city and paid a visit to John Dillon, assistant secretary of the Turf Congress. Mr. Palmer's visit was for the purpose of assuring Mr. Dillon that no outlawed horses or horsemen would be permitted to race over the Tampa track, and to obtain a litt, as far as possible, of all outlaws. Mr. Palmer also to d Mr. Dillon that-tbe-tfack would bo conducted strictly under Turf Congrese rules. While Mr. Dillon was not enabled to give the sanction of the Tuif Congress to the meeting, he told Mr. Palmer that horses that raced there and the officials of the track would not be outlaws, as Tampa is south of the line prohibiting winter racing and at liberty to give a meeting just the same as New Orleans. While the track is a half-mile affair, it does not outlaw its owners, simply being a bar to membership in the Turf Congress. Mr. Palmer was very enthusiastic over the Tampa track, which is owned and backed by H. B. Plant, the millionaire railroad magnate. In speaking of the coming meeting, Mr. Palmer said: "The mid-winter meeting of the Tampa Fair and Bacing Association will begin January 14 and will run to February 14. Purses will range from $75 to $125, with four races every other day. H. B Plant is president of the association, F. De C Sullivan secretary, and myself manager. Thomas Flynn will do the starting. The track is a half-mile affair and is situated on the grounds of the Tampa Bay Hotel, and j is within fifteen minutes' walk of Tampa, a city of E6.000 people. Five books will be in the betting ring, in charge of Charles Meddinger of Baltimore. We expect to have about 200 horses at the track, New Orleans and North and South Carolina owners having signified their intention of shipping to Tampa. The sport will provide considerable amusement for the large number of winter tourists in and around Tampa, and we believe the first meeting will bo a tremendous success. There is ample ground in the neighborhood of Tampa for a mile track, and if the venture turns out as is expected, a mile track, with all the modern j traok improvements, will be built next year." Cincinnati Commercial Tribune. Notes of the Turf NOTES OF THE TURF. Col. Saunders D. Bruce, founder f the well known weekly turf newspaper Turf, Field and Farm, feeling the pressure of advancing years has severed his connection with the publication with which he has been so usefully and honorably connected for nearly thirty-four years, having sold his one-third interest to H. W. Brown". The new partner will assume charge of the bnsinoss department. George Miller, the very speedy old Loftin horse in W. L. Stanfield's stable, ha3 beon put to work hauling a cart around the Ingleside track. This is his trainer's method of hardening the fleet galloper's legs, and it is said to work charmingly. San Francisco Examiner. Starter James F. Caldwell has finally succeeded in locating his trunk in the Baldwin Hotel ruins. The contents are considerably charred, but Mr. Caldwell is having the debris carefully sifted in the hope of discovering some of his lost diamonds. Mr. C. H. Pettingill is spending a few days in New Orleans from whence he will go to Saa Francisco to look over the racing situation. Derby Declarations DERBY DECLARATIONS.
