STO. 34. CHICAGO, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 1899. PRICE, 5 CEISTTS The 1899 Four Year Olds THE 1809 FOUK TEAR OliDS. A good, sound four-year-old is usually about at the zenith of his powers as a racehorse. To horses of that age fall the major portion of the honors of the big handicaps and other races for three-year-olds and upward. Last year the Brooklyn went to the four-year-old Ornament and the Suburban to the four-year-old Tillo. In fact in the lists of the winners of these two greatest of American handicaps, the four-year-olds largely predominate. It is very satisfactory to know that even if Hamburg has gone into retirement, we shall have quite a lot of good four-year-olds this year, even if none is on paper of quite as high class as Ornament and Ben Brush were rated before racing opened last year. It is quite likely that before midsummer arrives, it will be established that more than one of them can run as fast and as far as their predecessors of other years. In theBrooklyn and Suburban Handicaps of this year handicapper Vosburg has rated that splendid filly Briar Sweet as the best of the 4-year- olds entered. It is true that Plaudit carries more actual pounds in each race, one' more . in the Brooklyn and two more in the Suburban, but when her sex allowance is considered it is seen that she really concedes him four pounds in the Brooklyn and three pounds in the Suburban, With both at the post in perfect condi-tion it is more than doubtful whether she could .do this. Plaudit was by no means the most fortunate of horses last year and he was surely many pounds below his best western form when he ran in the east last year. His hard race in the Latonia Derby when with 127 pounds up he ran second to Han d'Or at a mile and a half in such phenomenal time as 2:32i, conceding the winner fourteen pouuds.unquestionably affected him. B e must have run in 2 :33 himself and the effort took so much out of him that ho was not afterwards nearly so good. Plaudit started in eight races of which he won four and was second in four. In most of his races ho carried high weights and in none did he carry low -weights while Briar Sweet carried low weights in most of her races. Plaudit has had a long reBt. He is in the care of a past master in the art of training and it is quite on the cards that this year he will probably establish his right to be called a really great racehorse. All the elements are there, speed of high order, demonstrated ability to handle high weight easily over any route, Hildreth to train and Clawson toride.COnpaperit is a very neat combination and it appears that only accidents or bad luck can prevent his ranking first among the 4-year-olds of 1899. Briar ISweet is probably the best mare that has appeared for some years. There was no question of her rank among the fillies of last year and from the way she ran at San Francisco that she has in no it a few days ago appears way lostlform. Of fifteen races last year she won thirteen.cHer two defeats came early in Francisco.' Both were in five the year at;San furlong spins, Montgomery beating her in the first and Paul Griggs in the oilier. After that she was invincible, tand it is to be hoped she will remain Isonnd through the year, in which case some very great performances will almost surely be recorded to her credit. Taking Plaudit and Briar Sweet to be by the record the best -of their sex therelis still quite a number of colts and fillies entitled to consideration by reason of sterling performances. Lieber Karl was only second to Plaudit. Up to the time accident led to his retirement he could beat the others of his age about as surely as Plaudit could beat him. He was fast, a weight carrier and a stayer. tHe has wintered well and been eRtered freely in the big stakes of the year. If he trains well and remains sound he should rate as the best of the western owned four-year-olds unless some of the others should show strongly marked improvement over their three-year-old form. In his ten races last year he was four times first, five times second and once third. A four-year-old somewhat difficult to rate is Pink Coat. That he was a good three-year-old his capture of the St. Louis and American Derbys attest. In the St. Louis Derby he had quite a pull in the weights, but in the big Washington Park race he shouldered his 127 pounds and won like a real racehorse. Afterwards, especially in the east, he did not do so well and, like Plaudit, he had probably trained off. He won three of his seven starts and was once second and twice third. It is probable that Pink Coat should be guaged by his best form of last year and'set down as a horse hard to keep on edge. At his best he should prove a handicap horse of high class. So far as is known he retired sound. Down east a three-year-old of last year, now in the Whitney-Paget stable, showed remarkable speed, endurance, unflinching courage and great weight-carrying power. That colt was George Keene, and as he went into winter quarters as sound as a new dollar it seems more than probable that he will add.to his fame this year. He is an every-day horse, and if he shows average improvement over his three-year-old form will be bound to rank very high in the racing annals of 1899. Alice Farley, Napamax, Goodrich, Han d'Or, Lanky Bob, Isabey, Bannockburn, George Boyd, John Bright and Warrenton are ten more four-year-olds, each of which is credited with distinguished performances last year. AH, so far as is known, will be active contenders for honors this year. Under favorable conditions every one of this lot can do a mile in 1 :40 or better with good weight up, and some can and have done so. Goodrich holds a mile and a half record that is likely to stand for many a year. John Bright beat Han d'Or and Pink Coat for the Himyar Stakes at Latonia. Han d'Or and Isabey are Derby winners. Bannockburn, with 122 pounds up, won the mile and a quarter Sheridan Stakes at Washington Park in 2:06K No one could say with positive assurance that there is one in the lot that might not under favorable circumstances achieve the highest honors of the turf. The possible improvement of such horses as Banastar, Candleblack, Bendoran, Swiftmas, Ed Farrell, George Krats, Hurly Burly, The Devil, St. Callatine, Crocket, Floronso and Handball can hardly be estimated just now. In fact Bendoran has already given evidence at San Francisco that he is likely to prove one of the cracks of the year so far as speed up to a mile is concerned, even if he goes no farther. On the whole, when tho.matter is looked into, it seems that we have moro really good four-year-olds to consider than a great many people have supposed. Notes of the Turf NOTES OF THE TURF. Though not so much fuss is being made about it, H. Martin is apparently riding with as much skill and success at San Francisco as Tod Sloan did last winter. Ho has nearly swept the card several times and has a remarkably high percentage of winning mounts. Tuesday, with five mounts, he was four times first and once second. If Gideon & Daly's youngsters are as good this year as they were last, "Skeets" will bo likely to make a stronger impression this year on the New Yorkers than he has done heretofore. Mr. Henry L. Frank, whose horses are wintering at Oakley, in charge of Trainer William Letcher, arrived in Cincinnati Monday. Mr. Frank will remain there a fow days to look over his flyers, which have been doing very nicely at the Cincinnati track. The Frank horses are entered in the different stakes at Latonia, aud will probably open the season at that track. Several two-year-olds will be added to the stable before the racing season opens. Iroquois Belle is the name selected for Messrs. Bromley & Co's b. f , 2, by Iroquois Yorkville Belle, and Indian Fairy for the ch. f, 2, by Iroquois Fairy. If their deeds match their lineage these feminine equine aristocrats will fill exalted places in the regard of turf followers long before next winter's snow flies. A., Chicago, 111. Libertine raced in the east for a short time in 1894. At Coney Island, July 2,1894, Libertine (103), won over the Futurity Course from Kingston (120), Annie Bishop (93) and a big field, in 1:11. Jockey Patsey Freeman will leave San Francisco for Memphis soon in hope of striking better fortune than has attended him on the coast. Mounts have been few and far between for the old timer this winter. J. W, Forsyth has sold to H. Eugene Leigh the brown filly Tildee, 2, by Kingston Stapella, by Hindoo. This filly is said to have worked a quarter in 23 seconds, and i very promising. Lord William Beresford has taken a Mr Agnes into equal partnership with him in all the horses now trained at Heath House by Huggins. They number thirty-seven. More or less reliable reports from Kentucky say that First Mate, a horse of supreme speed in the Bromley & Co. lot, is a hopeless cripple and will not race again. John Bobbins (the "Bone Doctor"), who formerly trained for Barney Schreiber, is to train a string for the millionaire St. Louis brewer Lemp this year. Bannockburn and Salvable, in Fat Dunne's string, have been fired and both are likely to stand. Salvable was most benefited by the operation. Enquirer, Chicago, 111. The records do not show that Desperation, imported by L. N. Schoenfeld in 1893, has ever started in an American race. Louis Ezell's once good horse Kamsin is wind-broken and has recently had a silver tube put in his throat by veterinarian Masoero. Rosebeau's saddle slipped in her last race, the accident preventing her from making a better showing. W. C. Daly has sold the bay mare Her Own, 5, by Galore Queen's Own, to J. N. Enright. The American Sporting Manual THE AMERICAN SPORTING MANUAL. The American Sporting Manual of 1898 is on general sale. It is a record of the turf, billiards, pugilism, trotting, pacing and all the leading lines of SDort up to January 1, 1899. All the matter within its pages have been compiled and edited by experts. It prints a list of all the turf and track records (by Daily Racing Form's staff), billiard figures, past and present (by John Thatcher), the fights of 189S, with comments (by George Siler), harness records to date and of the past (by John Hervey, tho statistician of The Horse Review) and throe.handicap tables, with directions for their application and expert comment. The Manual, in paper covers, sells at 30 cents and in soft morocco covers at 50 cents. Gossip of the Turf GOSSIP OF THE TURF. Mr. C. Jj. Railey, Springhurst, Ky., has a half dozen horses ready for training which it is said will be sent east next month' for a campaign over the New York tracks. The string is as fol-. lows : . Gar Avon, ch. g, 4; by Hanover Riplette. Wait Not, ch. c, 3, by Foriso Wait a While. Elfin Conig, blk. c. 2, by Tea Tray Islette. Swif twater, b. f . 2, by Candlemas Riplette. Fille d'Or, br. f, 2, by Galon d'Or Joanna. Candling, br. c, 2, by Candlemas L,!Indienne. Last Saturday's , San Francisco Examiner says: "The. racing days of Etta H. are probably over. . The good mare was entered in the fifth race but her legs were in such bad condition that Charley Thorpe, who had the mount, refused to take her to the post. He was on the way to the barrier when the mare stumbled. Becoming aware of her condition, he came back to the stand. By this action he forestalled the judges, who were just about to call him back. H. F. Edwards was fined $50 for sending Etta H. to the post when not in condition to race. She is so near to breaking down' that the trainer yesterday was afraid to warm her up and sent her to the starter without her preliminary canter. Under the California Jockey Club rules there is no sanction for the action the judges took in scratching the mare after she had gone to the post, but their action is to be commended. The money of those who bet on her would have been burned up had she started. Again, she might have stumbled or fallen and caused a serious accident." The Kentuckian is probably attracting more attention than any other horse at the Downs at present, because he is the only colt therewith any pretentions toward being a Derby candidate. Trainer Van Meter is pointing the colt for the Memphis Derby, and all of the stable think well of his chances in Tennessee's classic turf event. In speaking of the colt's chances, Mr. Van Meter said : "On two-year-old form I think we have a chance in the race. The Kentuckian last season showed his ability to take up his weight and go a distance in any kind of going. He is a colt with a splendid disposition, and has rounded into a better three-year-old than I ever expected. At the end of last season he was a trifle lower in flesh than I wanted him, but despite the fact that he has jogged his five or six miles every day, he is constantly gaining in flesh and in a week or two will be in just the shape I want him, for all of the flesh that he is taking on is hard and substantial." Louisville Courier-Journal. Furst Brothers, the Cincinnati owners, will have a much larger stable on the turf next season than they did during the year of 1898. Pretty Rosie is the star of the string. He, was a cracking good colt last year, and gives, promiso of being a high class 3-year-old. A chestnut colt, by Forester Ina D., is the most likely looking animal of the 2-year-olds in this stable, which is made up of the following: Pretty Rosie, ch. c, 3, by Bona Schoenfeld ; Adaline. Chestnut colt, 2, by Forester Ina D. Chestnut colt, 2, by Chance Bellgale. Chestnut colt, 2, by Tetra Bengaline,. Bay colt,- 2, by Bersan Ella Martin. The stable will probably open the season at Louisville next May. Cincinnati Enquirer. B. Schreiber has sold to C. P. Fink the Ibay colt Ulm, 3, by Balgowan Pennyroyal, for $700, and to! P. Ryan, of Chicego.Jhe chestnut geld-ingjRacivan, 3, by Racine Evangeline', for $200. Page [2] DAILY RACING FORM AND AMERICAN TDRF CONGRESS RECORD. ISSUED EVERY DAY.
