V. O, 40. CHICAGO, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 1899. PRICE. 5 OBNTS The National Stallion Race THE NATIONAL STALLION BACK. Last year Jean Beraud made himself famous by winning the $20,000 National Stallion Race at Morris Park. It was his first win and the first running of a rich and skilfully devised stake and Jean Beraud did its five furlongs "in a canter" in 59. It is the first really great two-year-old event of the year and as such a very desirable prize in the estimation of owners. For this year 164 colts and fillies are now eligible, 160 having been declared out December 1, 1898, at S10 each. The next declaration at $35 each, is due May 1. Part of the conditions read: "The Westchester Racing Association to add sufficient to make the gross value of the race 20,003 all to the winner less the following deductions: To the nominator of the winner, $1,000, to the owner of the second, $1,000, to the owner of the third, $500. The owners of the second and third horses shall also receive 30 per cent, and 20 per cent, respectively of the starting money. Of the subscription for stallions the nominators of the sires of the first, second and third horses shall receive 25 per cent., 15 per cent, and 10 per cent, respectively. Last five furlongs Eclipse course. Colts to carry 122 lbs., fillies and geldings, 119 lbs. Of the 2-year-olds still eligible Mr. J. B. Hag-gin owns the greatest number twelve. Fleisch-mann's Sons have nine, L. S. & W. P. Thompson, eight; A. H. & D. H. Morris, eight; J. R & P. P. Koene, seven; Bromley & Co., five. Among the stallions now represented are Ormonde, Hanover, Knight of Ellerslie, Sir Modred, Bramble, Ben Strome, Rayon d'Or, St. Blaise, Gold Finch, Golden Garter, Order, Albert, Potomac, Tenny, Artillery, Watercress, Midlothian, July, Himpar, Tammany, Sleipner, Star Euby, Belvidere, His Highness, St. Saviour, Pirate of Penzance, Meddler, Tournament, Chorister, Candlemas, Kingston, Magnetizer, Laureate, St. Florian, Strathmore, Lamplighter, Uncas, Galore, St. Leonards and Kinglike, surely a sufficient representation of the choicest blood lines of England, America and Australia. None of the aristocratically bred youngsters engaged having as yet faced a starter no line, except that of rumor, exists as to the capacity of the various eligibles. Gideon & Daly have a full sister to Jean Beraud in. She is thought to be a good one too. Pat Dunne is represented by the Bramble Lady Wayward colt for which he gave a long price last year and which was said to be one of the finest looking yearlings ever seen. He also has a colt by Hanover Keepsake. Messrs. Bromley & Co., of Chicago, have five engaged that are considered highly promising. They are the Hanover Drsuline Nun, Hanover Flying Witch, Hanover Miss Baden, Albert Hoodoo and Order Hattie B. colts. August Belmont has a chestnut colt by Rayon d'Or Lady Margaret named Magnificent that is said to be equal to his name and grand breeding. It is noticeable that of the 161 eligibles twenty-nine are fillies, five of which are by Ormonde. In fact the only representatives of the "Horse of the Century" are the five fillies sold by Mr. McDonough at his sale in San Francisco last December. Gossip of the Turf GOSSIP OF THE TURF. Miles Finlan of Butte, Mont., a member of the Montana legislature and owner of Lucky Star, now in winter quarters at Latonia, spent a few profitable months in Chicago last fall. J. K. Redmon trains the horse. At Harlem October 1, last, Lucky Star won a seven furlong race in a field of fifteen and Finlen won $25,000 over his victory. In a recent talk the Montana man said: "I won $25,000 on it. I got as good as 10 to 1 for most of my money, and played it in a number of other cities. My horse was backed down to 2 to 1 and 11 to 5 at the post. I was surprised at the odds. The bookmakers didn't know that he had won eight straight races in Montana, and beaten such horses as Ostler Joe and Rublcou, and I am glad of it. It is only a little over a year since I wouldn't have given a cigar for tho horse. " 'By' Holly, who is dead, poor fellow, got him out of a selling race at 'Frisco for $300. At Denver the horse began to improve, and when he got to Montana he was so good that parties followed to try to take him away from Holly, who was short of money. Knowing this, Holly sold him to me for $1,500. I don't know how good he is. He may not have much class, but he had not lost a race since I owned him and that makes mo think pretty well of him. His improvement in a year sbows how horses can vary, and it is possible he may go back where he was then." A sals of racehorses in training was held in the Now Orleans paddock previous to the races last Saturday. American bred horses figure in a number of the important spring handicaps in England and some are weighted among the top notchers. In the Lincolnshire, annually, the first big event of the English flat racing season, Sandia is given 121 pounds, only five pounds less than the top weight. Other American horses engaged are Golden Bridge (formerly Bridegroom II.), 119, Berzak, 108, David II., 102, Archduko II., 96 and Muggins, 91. This race is a mile dash and if good, Archduko II. might have a chance. In the mile and a half Northamptonshire Stakes, Golden Bridge is given 122 pounds. In the City and Suburban Handicap at Epsom, about a mile and a quarter, Sandia is given 122 pounds, only one horse carrying more; Golden Bridge has 119 and C. F. Dwyer's colt, Sly Fox, is seventh on the list with 116 pounds, being asked to give weight to a number of the best handicap horses in England. This colt i3 reported to be doing very well in his work, but on the basis of his performances in this country, has certainly been treated harshly. David II. is given 103 pounds and Bowling Green 84. In tho Kempton Park Great Jubilee Stakes, one mile, the American horses are Sandia, 120, Sly Fox, 119, Berzak, 110, Chinook, 105 and David II., 102. The Grand National Steeplechase to be run at Liverpool March 24 is conceded to be the greatest race in the world for the jumpers. In England it is annually provocative of nearly as much speculation as the Derby. The entries and weights this year are as follows : Mr. J. G. Macdonough has been in New York less than ton days, yet he has already received an offer for his famous Ormonde, "the horse of the century." Flattering as the offer was, the young Californian refused it and stated that while as a matter of politeness, he would consider proposals of this sort, the great horse was absolutely not for sale. While it is doubtful if the plucky young Golden Stater will ever get back the 175,000 the horse stood him landed at the Menlo Stock Farm, it is quite likely that the Ormonde yearlings from the high class mares would readily average 83,000 in the New York market. San Francisco Examiner. Of a jockey who went from Chicago to San Francisco and has shown there considerable improvement in skill, one of the 'Frisco news-paperslsays :s, "Jockey W. H. Martin is under contract4to Captain Waldon, but says rather than pay the money ho receives for mounts over to his;employer he will stay 'on the ground.' Martintcame here with C. P. Fink and would like tolwork for the latter, "but objects to paying up khis earnings to Captain Walden. The Captain. insists, however, and the result will be watched with interest. The lad is quite a promising rider. A newcomer to theanks of turfmen is J. Mc-Leod.Murphy, formerly of Torrington, Conn., but now of New York, being connected with the Safety Third Rail Electric Company. He has only. four horses at present, namely, Twinkler, b. c, 4.lby Brutus Nabette; Fonsavannah, b c, 2, by Fbnso Savannah; Kittie Daly, b. f, 4, by St. Florian Frailty, and Miss McLeod, by Dr. Hasbrouck Brenda, but he will add to the number. Spirit of the Times. A dispatch from New Orleans says that after a longfenforced absence from the saddle Jockey Joe Scherrer will probably again begin riding this; week He has signed to once more go to work forjFrank Frisbie, the contract being for the period until May 2 only, and on the receipt of his license, for which Judge Rees has wired Mr. Joseph Muiphy, he will make his reappearance inlthe saddle. Julius Bauer is the owner of three yearlings that he thinks will make racehorses of note. One is by Lamplighter, out of his old favorite, Sis O'Lee. He is de-cribed as a very powerfully, built and symmetrical colt, one of the kind to make an owner take a deep interest in future Dorbys. The other two youngsters are by the good horse Autocrat. It has not yet been officially announced who will be in the judges' stand at the coming Newport meeting, but the fact that Manager Fowler has been in correspondence with Judge Burke, would seem to indicate that that gentleman willLhave the position if he desires it.
