There promises to be a rare supply of jockeys available for the coming race meeting at the Fair Grounds. Eddie Jones, Devin and Powell are among the latest arrivals from San Francisco. Jones comes here to ride for Caesar Young. He came east with Charles Thorpe and speut several days at Thorpe's farm in Nebraska. Thorpe will arrive next Saturday in time to pilot Dr. Sheppard in the Inaugural. Devin is considered one of the most promising lightweights developed at 'Frisco last winter. Burns & Waterhouse have a call on him. Powell is a free lance, although George Bennett may secure a call on him for the St. Louis meeting. Powell is said to be quite a race rider.— St. Louis Republic. The horses belonging to the powerful Whitney stable will not be raced for Borne time, because of the recent death of Mrs. Whitney. Those that trainer Sam Hildretu had brought away from the farm to Morris Park for early action were: George Keene 4, Plaudit 4, Linstock 4, Buela 5, Mr. Clay 3, Black Venus 3, Toluca 3, Jean Beraud3, High Degree 3, Harmonica 3, Hurly Burly 4, Angle, b. c, 2, by George Kinney— Flit-away ' ; Amoy, ch. c, 2. by Meddler— Spring Tide; Bramble Rose, b. c, 2, by Bramble— Miss Nailer; | Creeper, ch. c, 2, by Iroquois— Great Annie; ' Last Card, b. c, 2, by Ben Stroine— Last Ban; ' Long Isle, b. c, 2, by LongBtreet— Exile; Maidstone, ch. f, 2, by The Bard— Maumee; Ogre, b. c, 2, by Meddler— Fatima; Recovery, b. f , 2, by I The Bard-Falee Step ; Scales, b. c, 2. by The Bard —Equipoise; Wat, b. c, 2, by Candlemas— Miss Ransom. Abe Cahn's speedy bat eccentric old mare, I a g f, Linda, has been mated with Dr. Hasbrouck. and after being raced for a time at St. Louis will be given ber well earned release from track service. Linda has beaten many a good one in ber time and been beaten by many a bad one. Her defeat of the mighty Morello at Washington Park, when both were three- j ear-olds, was the cause of any amount of heartburning and grumbling and in line with many of her performances since. The sale will take place at I night under a brilliant display of electric light and will comprise the progeny of over twenty of the most fashionable sires of the day. The program of the French Jockey Club for 1899 has just been published and shows that $500,000 will be given in added money at the Long Champs, the Masons-Laffitte and Chan-tilly meetings and over $100,000 at the provincial meetings. The liberality which characterizes the French turf in this particular surpasses that of racing events anywhere else in Europe. — Tarf, Field and Farm The stewards of the California Jockey Club reopened the cases of Jockeys H. Shields and Lester Reiff last week and reinstated both boys to all tb9 privileges of the track. Reiff was suspended some time ago because he rode a waiting race with Joe Ullman. Mose Goldblatt bought Tenor for $20. James Hand bought Departure for $20. W. H. Laird bought Blazavia for $130 and Our Guess for $75. W. Clancy bought Cordrey for $45.
