NO. 163 CHICAGO, SATTJRDAYrJITIiY 8, 1899. PBICE, 5 CEKT Harlem Racing HABLEM RACING, n A The crowd that went to Harlem yesterday ex- pecting to find the going deep and stiff weie g St. greatly surprised when they saw the course. Instead of being stiff and lumpy it was smooth bs and safe and fairly good time was made over it. If no rain falls before racing time today the track will be fast and an excellent card is offered for the closing of Harlem's second two weeks' term. Track Superintendent Billy Myers deserves a word of compliment for his work on the course. After the races, Thursday afternoon, he set lo work with three harrows and worked them continually for nineteen hours. Yesterday's racing feature was a condition j affair at one mile. It bad seven starters, and all of them bad quite a bit of weight up. Tlia ( gave the most experienced joskeys a chance to ride. The batting on it ,was fast, and every I horse' entered seemed to be backed with the exception of the natural favorite, Maceo. He opened at 7 to 5 and kept going up io the quota- tions until post time, when the tine was offering 4 to 1 and crying out for the money. The judges heard that something was wrong, though thoj knew nothing at all of the betting, and thought ( it a wiBO plan to change jockey3 on Maceo. Overton was up, but going lo the post the judges took him down and substituted Nutt. The . "bookies" and turf speculators have a high measure of respect for jockey Nutt now, and ( when the change waB made it almost caused a panic in the betting ring. Quicker than a flash '. Maceo'a price was rubbed to 21 to 1. The change of riders proved a healthy one, and Nutt, handling Maceo to perfection, won as he pleased by about a length from Benneville. Keens & Ryan's Pirate of Penzance Katie Ht colt, Phallas, long overdue and at a juicy price, won the three-quarter of a mile two-year-old race easily. This seems to be a fair colt, but in bis other local races he ran below his notch. Pros-tome beat him easily the last time the pair met, but in this race ho baat Prestome away off. The ring got hurt quite severely on the first race. It offered 10 to 1 against Lovable in the opening betting but this price -was cut, under heavy play, to 4i to 1 by post time. The filly ran as the batting indicated she would and after getting away none two well she weaved her-way through on the far ttuffl and going to the front In the straight, eve'a'tdally' won by three parts of a length froji Postmaster Bailey. Nick Hall at last broke his streak of bad luck and won a purse with Canace in the second race. The filly had Nutt up and was the bet. ting choice at 9 to 5. She got away in front but Nutt took her back down the backstretch, and holding a good position all the way, he came away when ready and cleverly defeated Cuirassier. Heroics, after much bad luck, finished third. Warren Point dropped into his class in the fifth race and over a track that was just to his liking, easily defeated Roger B., who was not ready, but ran a good race. The ling was out of line about Warren Point and offered 10 to 1 against him. The last race, a mile selling affair, was a soft thing for Bethlehem 8tar. The gelding was favorite at the liberal price of 2 to 1. He is a slow beginner and during the early stages of the journey did net seem to have a chance. At the half mile ground though, Beauchamp made his move, and Bethlehem Star moved to the fore like a flash, When the stretch was reached he waB in front and won fighting for his head by three lengths. Woodard & Shanklin will sell at public auction Saturday, July 15, in the Hawthorne pad-dock, all the horses belonging to J. K. Red- n A g St. bs mon, H. Li. Frank, W. H. Laudeman and Miles Finlen. The lot includes Serrano, Sen ator Bland, John Havlin, Bitter Root, MissioD, Aloysius and other good ones. Native Son and May S the property of P. Ryan, will also offered. Catalogues will be ready for die-tribution at Hawthorne race track next Tuesday. "Wash" Noivell will be at the Harlem track until 10 a. m. today to receive entries for Moc day's Hawthorne races. Gossip of the Turf j ( I ( . ( '. GOSSIP OF THE TURF. A lot of yearlings, mainly by the once famous sprinter Dr. Hasbrouck, were bold in St. LouiB recently for the following prices: Bay colt, by Doctor Hasbrouck Song Bhd; C C MafBtt, St. Louis $725 Chestnut filly, by Dr. Hasbrouck Dco- little; Dan Honig, St. LouiB 230 Bay colt, by Donald A. Rogers, Philadelphia 225 Chestnut filly, by Doctor-Hasbrouck Ban Adonia; Geoiga Gaston 180 If ever a horse went up against it that horse is Box. He was out down horribly in his rac e Monday. If he hadn't had on boots he would have been ruined. As it was a horse must have jumped on him and landed first on the left hind leg between the fetlcck and hock joints, then dropped down on his coronet, for he was cut in both placee, but the bad cut is the lower one ; the blood simply spurted out and could only be Btanched by the veterinary putting the tightest kind of bandages on it. He was also cut badly on the right hind leg. Mr. Showalter says he is getting superstitious about starting Box at Sheepsbead, aa he believes a fatality is pursuing the horse. A few days ago he was disqualified and now is cut down. This is the hardest kind of hard luck and both Mr. Show-alter and Mr. Graves are entitled tojjympathy. Morning Telegraph. A couple of days prior to the decision of the Brighton Beach handicap, one of the young men who write about racing for the enlightenment of New York, kindly offered the following bit of advice for the benefit of Imp's trainer: "It is about time Mr. Brossman let up on Imp for a while. He bet on ber yesterday, but to old mare is going back and has been having too much of it since the Suburban. If the old mare is given a rest she will show her heels to a lot of good ones yet." Now Hawthorne's Turn NOW HAWTHORNE'S TORN. With this day Harlem's second fortnight of racing comes to a close. As a whole the meeting has been all that could be asked for, the only drawback worth mentioning being the unlucky rainfall of July 4 that deprived both of the lecal racing clubs of a solid sum of gate money and has since kept the Harlem course in the condition horsemen and turf followers abhor. Tho attendance throughout has been generous and tho racing clean and marked by many inspiring and nobly contested finishes. By the time the opening day of the next meeting arrives the new grandstand will be completed in all details. Hawthorne reopens Monday. Secretary Kuhl has issued the program for the first week. It provides steeplechases for Monday, Thursday and Saturday, The cross-country events are popular, but so far there has been a lack of good and experienced timber-toppers. This deficiency will soon bs remedied, howevor. The owners of the majority of jumpers on the northern circuit have signified their intention to bring their horses here at once. The arrival of a dozen or more well-seasoned jumpers will serve to add interest and variety to the "illegitimate" branch of racing. In the flat racing department, the daily ords are intelligently devised and all classes of horses are libsrally provided for. The powerful Schorr Stable is to arrive at Hawthorne early next week and itB horses will no doubt soon be annexing their full share of the liberal purses provided by the local associations. Its jockey, T. Burns, will be a welcome addition to the present somewhat ineffective list of riders. With good weather some extremely fast and noteworthy racing can confidently be expected at Hawthorne in the course of the ensuing two weeks. Stakes at "The Beach" bTAKES AT "THE BEACH."
