SO. 166 CHICAGO, WEDNESDAY, JTJIiY 12, 1899. PBIGE, 5 CEOSTTg Tenby's Fast Mile TENBI'3 FAST MILE. I " A lot of water fell at Hawthorne yesterday and those that went to the track expecting to find the going muddy were agreeably surprised, j Rain was needed as the ground wa3 very dry and dusty. The track was not at its bsst, baing a trifle cnppy, but it was fast as was shown in the mile race which Tenby won in 1 :39l. The Tenby race was the feature of the day and stamps both him and Bonneville as being horses of high standard. Bonneville carried llai to Tenby's 107, and considering that he set the pace and won down such a speedy mare as ZEugenia Wickes in going the first half mile, it was a grand performance. Tenby was ridden to perfection by Nutt, who saved him like a veteran in the first part of the ' Journey and made his more at the right time. He got to Benneville and had tbo latter beaten at the eighth post and was then easing up at the end. Had the track been at its best and Tenby fully extended he would possibly have made a new record for a mile. Louis Ezell handed the ring one in the fifth race which was a three-quarter condition affair. He had his good filly. Espionage, keyed up to concert pitch and backed her from 3 to 1 -and better down to 11 to 5. Butter had the mount and laying in a good position next to the rail all of the way, he shot out of the bunch like a flash on the stretch turn and bafore the other boys had a chance to realize what had happened he had stolen a long lead and eventually won easily from Sim W. and Semper Eadem. Sim W. had up quite a lot of weight -and ran a cracking good race. A pretty struggle bstween two strong, competent jockeys was seen in the Eecond race. This was a three-quarter daah and fifteen started. Peter McCue jumped oat into the lead soon after the start and led by threo lengths into the stretch. Here he began to show signs of weakness and there was a general closing up. Peter gave it up at the eighth post, and from there to the wire the race narrowed down to a struggle between Lord Zeai and Tappan. Vandusen rode the latter anl Knapp had the mount on Lord Zeni. Both boys are good riders and strong finishers. Consequently the public was treated to a first-class exhibition of horsemanship. Lord Zeni was on the outside and Knapp took particular pains not to let Tappan squeeze through between him and the rail. Yandnsen, however, was determined and would not pull up and go around. So the two boys fought and struggled all the last sixteenth, Lord Zdni finally winning by a short head. Miss Ethel McGnigan's handsome filly Unsightly won another line race for her handsome owner in the initial five furlong spin for two-year-olds. Unsightly was the natural favorite and was backed from 2 to 1 down to 7 to 5. She got away third, but immediately went to the front, and leading throughout, won pulling up from Zaza. Unsightly is perhaps the bast of her sex at the local tracks. 'Uarda, who is in her very best foim at present, had an easy task in the mile and an eighth race. Butter shot her to the front passing the atand and she was never again bothered, winning away off by herself and hard held from PanjCharm. Talbot Brothers' Eberhart was backed off the boards to win the last race, bat the bast he could do was to get the place. The winner turned up in Carnero, who pulled up sound and is liable to regain his 1897 form again. Several of the jockeys were sick yesterday. The room they are compelled to stay in is built on the west side of the grounds, and is consequently exposed to the sun all the afternoon. I " j For some unknown reason the windows were all nailed up yesterday, and this made ttie room a regular sweat-box. Captain Bees has this to say of the Henry Launt disqualification on Monday: "Freeman was whipping and driving in a reckless way below the sixteenth post and bore in repeatedly on Del Paso II. Beauchamp, on the latter, was obliged to take up and come around Henry Launt." Mr. Bees also stated that he had made up his mind to disqualify Henry Launt before Beauchamp made his claim. Gossip of the Turf ' GOSSIP OF THE TURF. The authority that governs ail fiat racing in England, the Jockey Club, has decided that in all two-year-old races run under its jurisdiction next year the starting barrier,, or gate, shall be used. If the experiment provoB satisfactory the two and threa-year-old races of the succeeding year will be started in the same manner. Lord Durham, a strong advocate of the innovation, eo impressed his co-members of the Jockey Olub by his arguments in favor of its use that to him is mainly due this radical change in English racing. Some extracts from" bis address are Lure presented. Daily attendants on racing in this country will be amused and interested in observing how closely they portray what occurs day after day on American racetracks. It is obvious that the so-called starting problem presents the same features in both countries and that if some new method results in more even and expeditious starting in one conntiy it should prove to be equally efficacious in the other. In the course of his address Lord Durham said : "The rule said : 'Any jockey presuming to start, or even to put his horBe into a trot or canter with a view to take any advantage before the flags are dropped, wilfully turning his horse around, not starting when the flags are dropped, hanging behind, or refusing to obey the commands of the starter in any respect whatever, shall be reported to the stewards.' The jockey was never reported; and in every single race jockeys were always trotting and cantering their horses and wilfully turning their heads around. "Another thing which jockeys were not supposed to do, but which they did in every single race, was that they got in front of tbo starting post when they ought to be coming back to the starter; and long before they returned to the proper position they again whipped their horseB round in order to secure an advantage at the start. He thought it was clear that their protect rules of starting were not observed, and the matter had come to such a pass, owing to tho flag system of starting having bacome viciously altered from its original constitution, that the jockeys took charge of tho starter, instead of the starter taking charge of the jockeys. "He would point out to th9 opponents of the starting gate, who feared that our horses were so very much more excitable and irritable than horses bred in other countries, that in the case ! of a horse having bolted from the post, it very often happened that the horses left waiting at the post for the other horses to come back were ' as quiet as old troop horses, because tho jockeys ' left them alone; they dropped the reinB on their necks and the horses stood quite quietly. "When a horse has bolted, do you think tho jockeys will wait till that horse comes back ? f No; when he gets within twenty yards of my ' flag off they go, and never give him a chance; if they do give him a chance of turning around, i then, before the horse is half round off they are i again." Minister Strauss writes from Constantinople, , ! ' ' f ' i i , under date of May 18, 1899, that, according to a note verbile from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Turkey, the regulations prohibiting the exportation of horses from that country have been removed and a duty of 5 Turkish liras ($24) will b9 charged upon each horse exported. As inquiries are made from time to tima regarding the export of Arab horses from Turkey, this information maybe of intereBt. Many of the leading western stables are quartered at the Saratoga track. Ed Corrigan has all his juvenile cracks at the famous New York summer resort. Corrigan has a strong band of two-year-olds in Golden Bule, Sardine, Basseda and St. Anthony. Golden Bule is considered one of the fastest two-year-olds developed in the west this season. He is thought good enough to beat the best of the crack eastern youngsters. Sardine is good enough to beat any of the eastern fillies. Another western horseman, who has a string that ought to cut a' big figure at the Saratoga meeting, is Tom McDowell. He has Bush, Spirituelle, His Excellency and other good ones in his stable. Barney Schreibsr's string is among the latest arrivals at- Saratoga. Tayon, . a two-year-old bay colt by Lissak Caroline Hamilton, in the Schreiber string, was seized with a car fit en route to Saratoga, and severely injured himself before be quieted down. There promises to be rare doings at Saratoga in the two-year-old division. Corrigan's Golden Bule and Sardine, Tomlinsou & Co.'s The Conqueror, C. H. Smith's Lieutenant Gibson, Schorr's Sam Phillips, McDowell's His Excellency, J. D. Smith's Estill and Clay Bro3.' Kilmarnock a're among those that will clash with the pick of tbo eastern youngsters. When the smoke of battle clears away it may be concluded that we have some downright good two-year-olds after all, something that might well be doubted if the gloomy criticisms of the New York scribes were set down as gospel truth. Critics at Brighton Beach say that Martimas has grown bat little in height since last year but that he is a colt of wonderful muscular development. His trial with 115 pounds up prior to the Brighton Beach Handicap was as follows : 12i, 24, 364, 48i, 1:01, 1:14, 1:27, 1:40, 1:51, 2:07i. That would be good enough to win most races, and in the actual race he must have done at least 2:061. He is evidently a very good horse and a race between him and Ethelbert at even weights would be sure to exite great interest. Speaking of Flaunt's victory in the Undergraduate Stakes at Brighton Beach Saturday a New York newspaper eays: "It was a wonder that Flaunt was ever able to get home as he did, for he was cut down three times in the race. One of the cuts was on the hock, and a difference of a fraction of an inch in its depth would have ended the colt's usefulness forever." Marcus Daly haB sixty-seven foals of this year at his Bitter Boot Stock Farm. Inverness is the sire of 12, Montana and The Pepper, 11 each: Tammany, 9; Bathampton, 4; Meddler, 3. The otherB are by Matt Byrnes, Sam Lucas, Goldfinch, Star Euby, Friar, Hanover and the English sires Kendall, Donovan, Bavensbury, Crowberry. Ayrshire and PrimroBe. The yearlings of E. F. Simms and those of W. i P. Norton will be shipped to Sheepshead Bay in a few days whore they will be broken and han-I died for racing next season. In Mr. Simms' lot are a foil brother to Tom Collins and a half brother to The Kentuckian. In Mr. Norton's shipment is a full brother to Sunny Slope Thoroughbred Becord. Tappan was unfortunate in getting away, but Yandusen took desperato chances down the backstretch and woaved his way through. Enapp, with Lord Zsni, pinned Tappaa in on the rail in the last sixteenth. This is how he beat him. Lord Zeui was lucky throughout. Facade was far back and in a bad position when the barrier went up. He ran a flue race and finished very strongly. Fetor McCuo showed his usual phenomenal tnrn of speed and also his faint-hearteon?S3. He quit to a walk in tho stretch. Norma Taylor got a runaway start. It wbb of no use to her, as Peter McCao racod her to exhaustion in tho fir.st half. Littlo Jack Horner made one bid in the stretch and then retired. Winner B. c, by Tunny Soprano. Off at the tint break t a good start. Won easily ; second eased at the end after an early drive. Considering the condition of the track, which was a tiifla cuppy after the rain, this was a grand race both for Tenby and Banneville. Tenby was at his very best and was judiciously-handled. Nuti waited as long as lie possibly could, thus avoiding the early pace, and made his run-at the right time. That was when Eugenia Wickes retired. Tenby had Bonneville beaten at the eighth post and was easing up at tho end. Bonneville was conceding a lot of weight, and considering lie had to do this end make the pace, hia performance was a high class one. Eugenia Wickes did well as far as she went. Piccula was outclassed. Overweights Eugenia Wickes, 1 pound; Bonneville, 31. Tenby, place, out. Bennevillo, place, 2 to 5. Piccola, place, 3 to 5. -9QQ Q 1 FOURTH RACE 1 1-8 Miles. Pan Charm ran a good race. Mathows saw he had no chance to boat Uarda in the stretch and eased the colt up. Mark him. There was a wise play on him today. Elkin was slow to begin and it seemed probable that ho would get into a bad mix-up on the first turn. Vandusen was lucky, tbongh, and by good judgment managed to get through.
