NO. 167. CHICAGO, THTJBSDAY, JULY 13, 1899. FBICE, 5 OEStTb Hawthorne Races HAWTHOKSE RACES. There was a big howl jesterday at Hawthorne J over the second race. Meddler, who has been unbeatable recently, bolted after the barrier went up and was left standing. The old rogne was an odds-on favorite and the majority of the j speculators were falling over one another to frit on him at 13 to 20, which looked to be a royal price. Meddler ehowed signs of nnanness in one of the breakaways whjn he propped and shook his hsad in a knowing way. In the next couple of breakaways he went off like a good, honest horse and this deceived the starter. Dwyer watched the old sprinter carefally, and when he mad9 the start and dropped his flag Meddler was in a good position and fully twenty feet beyond the starter. Rutter knew "it was a go" and seemed pleased at the oxcallent send-off he got, when, all of a sudden, Meddler shot -to the outside fence and turned completely around. May Beach then want on and won off by herself in l:13i, sliowinj that she is in her early two-year-old form when she had everything sinch?d at New Orleans but May Hempstead. Of course the reception Master Ruttor got when he returned to the stand to weigh in was not altogether a pleasing one. Patrons of racing are always ready to hoot at a boy when the horse he rides gets left at the post. But in this instance the boy was not to blame, and the 5hences are that he fels worse about the per-fermanca of Meddler than did anyone in the crowd that collected around the stand, and made all sorts of depreciating remarks. Directly on top of the Meddler disaster came the defeat of Cherry Leaf, an 8 to 5 favorite, who was much the bast of tho lot lie was in with. The veteran jockey, Hamilton, rode Jherry Leaf, and a more weird exhibition was seldom ever witnessed on the Hawthorne track. Hamilton did everything but fall off during the early stages of the race, and then when he had the race won in the stretch he went to "Kipps-ville" and allowed Graziella to steal up on the inside and win by a nock. EiReseda. after being backed from 3 to 1 down to 8 to 5, won the first race like a lady from Belle of the Glen, a 30 to 1 chance. Edinbor-ough. fourth, is a much better youngster than the filly and will show his quality later on. He is a grand looking colt, but wa3 lame in this race. Harry Nutter was badly treated in the fourth race. He was knocked down at the post by ( Marguerite Hageaian and was bumped and interfered with throughout. This, however, never "feased" him and standing a terrific drive through the stretch he beat Lime Water by a head on the post. The fifth race went to Diana Fonso. This filly beat Sam Fullen, who was touted as a 'good thin;," and is a grand looker and ran a fine race for a new beginner. Horace, at 3 to 1, carefully ridden by J. 1 .Mathews, was the lucky one in the sixth race. Judge Rees has ruled ex-jockoy "Willie" De-long ' off the turf. It seems Delong tried to 1 bribe jockey Johnson who rode Jack Hayes in 1 the steeplechase Monday. Jockeys O'Brien and Johnson, who were suspended for foul riding in Monday's steeplechase, ' have been reinstated. Gossip of the Turf GOSSIP Of THE TUBF. Paddy Tomlinson, who developed The Conqueror, is satisfied that he has the greate st two-year-old iu training on the American turf in the i fast black soa of Sir Dixon Repeat, and is prepared with cold cash. , to back up his opinion Mr. Tomlinaon says his colt was b3aten ia tha J j ( 1 ' 1 1 ' i , Junior Championship at the Fair Grounds through a combination of circumstances. At the time the race was run, The Conqueror was troubled with a sore hoof. It seems that the I colt picked up a jack at Memphis, and the little . stone worked its way into the hoof and had to be cut out. In the meanwhile the horse raced with a bar plate on his hoof. Tomlinson also thinks he got the worst of it by riding Conley, who certainly gets none the bast of it from hi3 -white rivals for riding honors. Tomlinson offered Pi?gott $250 "in hand" to pilot The Con- queror, but Joe had to ride Boundlee, being ' under call to the latter's owner, Barney Schrei-bar. "I think The Conqueror can beat any horae in America," said Tomlinson last night, "and I am prepared to have him try conclusions with the best they have east or west. I am willing to bat from $1,000 to 52,000 on The Conqueror against any two-year-old in the country, the race to be run within three weeks, distance six furlongs. If this proposition is not accepted, I will run the colt against any horse in America at seven-eighths of a mile for the same bet, the weights to be ten pounds below the scale. I think The Conqueror is a better horse than liia sire Sir Dixon ever was, and that's Baying quite a lot. I have just received a consignment of five yearlings from Clay & Woodford, which I will campaign for them next season. The Conqueror's dam, Repeat, foaled a fine bay colt this spring by Leonatus. She had no foal last year. The Conqueror coet me $175 as a yearling. He is well engaged in all the big derbys next year." St. Louis Republic. W. F. Scbulto is breading thoroughbreds on a large scale 'near Louisville. Mr. Schulte is president of the new Louisville Jockey Club, and maintains both a big breading and racing establishment. He has three stallions on his farm, namely, Florist, tho sire of Dnnois and Flora Louise; King Lee, who was one of the best 2-year-olds of his year in tho we3t, and Ar-gyle, the sire of Alleviate and other good ones. Mr. Schulte's band of broodmares includes the dams of such good horses as Alleviate, Fretful, Prince FortuaatnB and Pickpocket. Among the other well-bred mares is a half-sister to Den d'Oro, a full sister to Senator Grady, and a full sister to Jennie Tracy. Mr. Schulte races the produce of bis own breeding establishment. Holla Colston, the well-known colored trainer, handles his racing string, while "Long Shot" Conley, tho colored Archer, is the stable jockey. Mr. Schulte formerly owned Sophia Hardy, the dam of Hardy Pardee and tho $10,000 2-year-old Lieutenant Gibson. He sold this mare for $35 at a weeding-out sale of broodmares from off his farm some years ago. The Schorrs may race a few horses at San Francisco next winter, but that is dependent upon the outcome of negotiations now pending between them and Burns & Watorhouse for a lease of jockey Thomas Burns's services for the winter season at San Francisco. Thorpe's contract with the California firm expires December 31 of this year. Of course, it will probably be renewed, a3 tho firm would have to go a long way to find as good a rider as the "old man," but they will also need the services of a light-weight, and Manager Tuttle is anxious to secure Burns. An offer was made for Burns for January, February, March and April, but Mr. Schorr will not let the boy go unless he is taken for the full six months, from November 1. If this deal is consummated, Mr. Schorr will send his son Johnnie with Burns, and will let him pick two or three horses to ' take along and raco, while ho takes the balance , of the string, after his weeding out salo at Lex-i ington in the fall, to New Orleans. Winner B. f, by Pardee Espana. Off at the first break to a good start. Won easily at the end after a hard drive; the next three were under keen pressure. Reseda was the most fit. She wan under a hard drive on the far turn, but stood it gamely and came on when tho others stopped. Edinborougb is probably better than those he met today. He was short and appeared to be' a trifle lame in front. Watch him. He is a grand looker. Belle of the Glen ran a good race. She weakened under punishment at the end Aileau Wilson had bad racing luck. With clear sailing she would have been second and might have bad a chance to win. Fly Lotta acted insanely at the post, but after getting away well Bbowed some speed. Sea Rover boltd in the stretch. Just after passing the wire Russell R. stumbled and throw jockey Ransom. May Beach had spoed to loan and had she been pushed could have run about a second faster. This is a very speedy filly. The race was very unsatisfactory to the public and created a lot of noise. Meddler broke second and was twenty feet past the starter when be bolted. The horse is a rogue and Rutter or the starter could not be blamed for his actions. Winner Ch. f, by Aintreo Quick. Off at the first break to a good start. The first three were driving to the limit. Cherry Leaf was far the bast. Hamilton's ride on him was a nightmare He was on the outside of every horse on the first turn and went almost to the fence. Hamilton then pulled the hnrsa up and took to the inside. Down tho backstretch he was fortunate in not being shut off and at the three-eighths pole had the raco won. He then swung very wide on the stretch turn. Knight, on Greziella, took advantage of this and by skinning the rails saved a lot of ground. Hamilton never looked to the inside, but sat still and laughed at Vitatoe on Branch. This cost him the raco, as Graziella, on the inside, came with a tremendous rush in the last fifty yards. Cherry Leaf is fit and good and can win at once. Uarda showed a lot of speed, but quit.
