O. 169. CHICAGO, SATURDAY, JUXT 15, 1899. PRICE, 5 CEK TS Hawthorne Racing HAWTHORNE RACING. 1 c Exciting racing aDd close finishes were the order at Hawthorne yesterday. In all of the j events with the exception of the fonrth the winner was folly extended and naturally the crowd was keyed up to concert pitch the ( entire afternoon. i The last race, which was a five aod a half , furlong dash for two-year-olds, famished the best contest of the day and also demonstrated , that Unsightly is by far the best two-jear-old filly at the local tracks, and judging from this , raca few, if any, of the colts can beat her. Sh9 was the natural favorite and even money i seemed like a royal price, but a second or two : after the barrier arose and Unsightly had been bumped and knocked back until she seemed to j be hopelessly out of it the speculators would have hesitated abont makicg a b9t that she would win even if 10 to 1 had been offered. She proved to be as game as they make them, however, and after Beaucbamp tcok her to the outside and got clear sailing she picked up her field one at a time, and coming through the stretch with an even graceful stride eventually won by a scant half length. It was a grand exhibition of thoroughb'red stamina and the filly waB given a hiaity reception when Beauchamp cantered her back to the stand to weigh in. Previous to Beanchamp's good ride and caie-fnl handling of Unsightly he gave an exhibition of rank carelesness and did just what Daily. Racing Form has predicted several times that he would do, throw a race away. He did this on Kamlet the favorite in the first race, Hamlet was on the rail swinging into the stretch and opposite the paddock had a safe lead of about two lengths. Beauchamp looked bshind and saw that all those in reach of him were driving hard and in distress and then stupidly cased up on his mount. Quicker than a flash Kastaine shot out of the bunch and before Beauchamp knew what had happened the wire wrb reached and Kastaine had beaten him by a head. Everett oame near throwing the fourth race away on Jolly Roger. After getting out of a tight pinch with him on the far turn and having the race in hand he bscame overconfident, and Jim McClevy coming with a tremendous ruBh almost nipped him, Everett, though, was not as careless as Beauchamp had been, and saw Jim McClevy coming in time to get his horse going again. A big surprise came out of the third event. Helen's Pet, a 25 to 1 chance, winning from Boney Boy, Brigade, Espionago and other fast ones. Helen's Pet has always been a filly of great speed but she has heretofore shown a disposition to stop, and as this raca was supposed to be beyond her distance she did not appear to have a remote chance. As the race was run there was a lot of luck connected with her success. She got away Hying and had a lead of two lengths when the stretch was reached. At this point Vitatoe was out about ten feet from the rail, and Everett seeing this started . through on the inside. At about the same i time Everett started through, Vitatoe pulled i over closer to the rail and shut Brigade off. . Boney Boy was now lapped on Helen's Pet and this put Brigade in a pocket. Everett tried 1 several times to force his way through, but ; could not do it, and to keep from jumping on and cutting Helen's Pet down, ho was obliged to pull up and surrender the place to Boney Boy. The race had a queer look to tho spectators . and many thought a foul had b09n committed. ' There was none, though. It was 3 simply a bad piece of raciDg luck that often 1 happens to horses and jockeys when racing 1 down the backstretch and escapes the eye of f 1 c j ( i , , , i : the spectators. Everett, of course, made a claim for foul, bnt it was ignored. Jockey 'Mathews displayed a clever bit of jockeyship in the second race which he won with Cy Hughes' colt Decoy. Mathews squeezed through on the rails in the stretch and after a desperate finish, in which he clearly outrode Vitatoe and Ratter, won by a head. Decoy was entered to be sold for $300, but was run up to $700 by Albert Simons. Hughes retained his colt for the odd fiver. Egbart, long overdue and at a tempting price, won the fourth race as he pleased. Bloss rode him and used excellent judgment. He loafed along in second position all the way aud never made a move until the stretch was reached. Jockey Caywood, who has been sick for a loDg time, was at the track. He will begin to ride at once. The recent death of Miss Woodford at Rancho del Paso brings to mind the almost complete failure in the stud of several of the best race mares that ever looked through a bridle, and also shows the uncertainty of breeding. No State, not even far-famed Kentucky, could boast of three such celebrated queens of the turf as Miss Woodford, Firenzi and Los Angeles. In the early 80's Miss Woodford scored many brilliant victories, yet, mated to stallions of reputation, she has not only failed to reproduce herself, but has not given the turf one racehorse of stake or even handicap pretensions. Firenzi was a grand race mare of the finest blood lines, yet she will never be remembered for anything she has yet given to the turf. Of course, Firenzi was a much younger mare than Miss Woodford and has yet a chance to redeem herself as a brood mare. Lcs Angeles, while not quite as high cIbbs a mare as Firenzi, was much more to the eye than tho Haggin crack. None of her progeny has displayed any promise. On the other hand, at the same ranch where Los Angeles is owned, Aloha, a cheap selling plater, produced Rey El Santa Anita, the winner of the American Derby. Marian, pre-eminently the grandest broodmare ever brought to California, had no reputation as a race mare, but she produced Emperor of Norfolk, El Rio Rey, Yo Tambien, Czar and several other crack horses. In spite of these facts the owners of stock farms are still mating stake winners with stake winners, with the expectation of producing record breakers. Before closing the subject of the uncertainty of breeding racehorses it would be apropos , to recall that, while Firenzi has been a failure as a broodmare, her full sister, Fleurette, who never shone as a race mare, has been a uccess. Perhaps, after all, the non-succes3 attending Miss Woodford, Los Angelos and Firenzi has baen duo to their seasons of hard racing San Francisco Chronicle. Writing of an excellent food for horses, Consul Hughe3 of Coburg says: "Potato bread is used by the natives of Thuringia to feed their horses, especially when they are working hard in cold weather. The animals thrive on it, and their health and strength are excellent. The method of preparation is simple and inexpen- sive. Tho potatoes are slowly stewed until they are soft; they are then maBhed thorougly, and an equal quantity of corn meal is added. It is mixed into a thick paste, with a small quan-l tity of salt. The paste is then divided into fonr-. pound loaves and allowed to bake until thor-1 oughly done. In the slow country ovens it gen-' erally takes from fifteen to eighteen hours. When cold they aro fed to the horsoa and cattle doing heavy work at the rate of fonr loaves day viz. : one in tho morning, one at noon, one about four o'clock, aud one at night. With the last about ten pounds of poor hay are givon. It is claimed for this method that horses can do much more work on the same amount of food, and that it is good for their teeth. 1 1 ' 1 , 1 . Decoy squeezed through a tight place at the head of the stretch and managed to get up in the last few strides. Mathews clearly outfinishsd the other boys. There was quite a bit of crowding in the stretch. Merito bore ii on Maharajah causing the latter to pull up. It was purely accidental and no official notice was taken of it. Merito ran a good race. She was slow to break and had to run clear around her field. Maharajah anpeared to ba winning when straightened away for homo but stopped when the pinch came. She is a speedy filly bnt has never before shown a disposition to go a route. Boney Boy, as usual, was right i there, Brigade was perhaps the best. He got into a pocket in the stretch and could not get out again. This cost him the race. Everett skinned the rail on the turn expecting to be able to get ; through. Vitatoe, who rode Helen's Pet and had a lead of two lengths when straightened away, pulled to tbo inside hmself. As Boney Boy was on the outside and lapped on Brigade, this put ; the latter in a bad position. Everett was obliged to pull Brigade up in the last twenty feet to koep from cutting Helen's Pet down. This was how Boney Boy boat him for tho place. There was no foul but Everett claimed one just the same. The judgas paid no attention to the claim. Winnor B. h, by Egmont Jennie Doty. Off at the first break to a good start. Won easily; second cleverly; third and fourth driving to the limit. Egbart ran one of his best races and was perfectly ridden, Bloss rated him cleverly all the way and came with a rush through the stretch. Robert Bonner had no excuses. He got away flying, always had clear sailing, but was simply not good enough to beat Egbart today. Rutter lost a lot of ground by turning wide on the stretch turn. Tho boy, though, may not have been to blamo as the horse has a habit of bearing out. Elkin and Pan Charm had it hammer and tonga all the way. The pair went around the first turn head and head and kept so the entire distance. Einer ran an improved race. He was closo up for the first seven furlongs and looked S dangerous, but stopped badly at tho end. Henry Launt is probably stalo. Scratched 133473Lord Zeni, 114; 13323 Woodranger, 103. He beat the nag, but did d not haVo to do so to win. Everett took the colt back on the first turn and got into a bad looking position down the backstrotch. 'He was fortunate, however, in not getting shut off and had the race won when the stretch was reached. Ho then became a trifle overconfident and Jim McClevy I stole up alarmingly close, causing Everett to go to his whip. Jim McClevy over-raced himself. Dutch Comedian bad a lot of speed, but could not carry it over three-quarters. Eberbart is not much. Roaavannah ran a good race as far as she went.
