TO. 177. CHICAGO, TUESDAY, JULY 25 1899. PRICE, 5 CENTS Again at Harlem AGAIN AT HABIGSI. The local racing- scene ehif ted yesterday from "Hawthorne to Hailem and, as is almost always the case before horses get accustomed to a change of tracke, there were some form variations. Egbart's and Brigade's raceB yesterday were good examples of this. It was a hot, sultry afternoon but the card offered by Secretary Nathanson was a V6ry attractive one and a crowd of over 3,000 sweltered in the grandstand and betting ring. Garnero's good race, Brigade's bad one and Egbart's form somersanlt were the main features. Carner o, who is naturally a horse of high class, but baa been a cripple for over a year, i was in the fifth event at a mile and one-sixteenth, along with a pretty good lot, which, included John Baker, who was made favorite over the field at 8 to 5 and less. That Carnero is once more athimself he clearly demonstrated. He trailed in behind his horses until the stretch was reached and then went to the front on call. Carnero ran the last mile in 1 John Baker xan a fair sort of a race, but had to be contented with third place, Monk Wayman beating Mm three-quarters of a length. The Brigade race had a bad look and will be likely to get someone into trouble. The horse .looked like a sure winner in the fourth, a mile condition race, and 9 to 20 was the best price ever offerad against him, and it seamed then that the pencilers were giviDg away their money. Brigade got away fourth but had no speed whatever, and down the back stretch dropped ten lengths back of the last horse. Flick, who rode Brigade, seemed to be hunching and urging the horse for all he was worth but it was of no use. He plodded in behind the bunch until the head of the stretch where it seemed for an instant that he was going to display some speed but he never did. After the finish, Espionage having won easily from Pay tha Fiddler, an angry mob gathered around the judge's stand and for an instant a sta mpede ' looked possible. The judge3 called Flick up and also Owner 3. ft. Bradley, but neither could explain the horse's bad showing. In fact, Flick was crying so bitterly that he could not talk at all. Brigade did not carry either whip or spur and the judges were at sea as to what action to taka. They finally declared the race no contest, bat will farther investigate the matter. Esrbart, with 116 pounds up, finished fourth to Bon Jour, TJarda and Einstein in his last oat, which was at Hawthorne last Friday. The raca was at a milo and a sixteenth and was run in 1:48. Yesterday Egbart was in at a mile and an eighth and with ten pounds less weight he won in a romp in 1:551. Einstein in the same raca finished a bad fifth. The Harlem track is evidently Egbart's choice. Still he has the reputation of being a bad horse and a rank in and outer. This considered, the horse was backed from 2i to 1 down to 2 to 1. Graziella showed her heels to a fast lot of sprint9rs in the third race. The talent always overlooks this filly and she wont to the post at 5tol. Mathews rode her, and waiting in a good position until the stretch was reached he then made hii move and Graziella responding like a good race mare came on and won by two lengths from Cancva. Tho first race furnished an accident and also a big surprise. The accident happened to Erla d'Or wht) got tangled up on the far turn and went down with jockey A. Booker. It was a bad looking fall, and Booker was lucky in escaping alive. The surprise was the fact that Willie Newcom rode tho winner, Zaza. It has been about a year sinc3 this jockey finish ed in front. Tho last race went to Maggie Davis. This filly is very spdedy and by getting a loDg lead early she managed to last long enough to win. Following are recent new arrivals at the Harlem track : Redfield & Wallenstein with Great-lands and Pell Mali II; W.H.Rogers with Richard J Our Gertie, Kensington and others; W. H. jlay with seven head, and J. G. Cahn from St. Louis with his entire string. "Virginia" Bradley has at last put what possibly may be the laBt nail in Boney Boy's coffin. The honest little "iron horse" puiledup very lame in his laet race, and the veterinary says he has broken down. It was about this time last season that Traverser dropped dead. This may teach Bradley a lesson in humanity. Gossip of the Turf GOSSIP OF THE TURF. Messrs. Whitney & Paget are having their yearlings broken at Mr. H. P. Headley's La Belle farm, with Thomas Hogan, who has had charge of the Whitney Paget brood mares and foals, in chief command, and Ted Whitham (in charge of the stallions) as boss rider. They are thirty-one in number, and their breeding is given below. The Goldfinch Firenzi filly is especially a fine individual. It will be recalled that Goldfinch was imported to California by Mr. Haggin, where he made a season or two and then was returned to England. Chestnut filly, by Goldfinch Firenzi. Keene is opposed to the use of the starting machine, and said of in a recent interview : "Tho use or discontinuance of tho starting gate is the most absorbing question now confronting the Jockey Club, and one that from its importance can only be decided after the fullest consideration. Personally I am opposed to its uee and have been consistently so for a long period, but I realize that other gentlemen as well able to form a correct opinion as I favor it. I am aware that the English Jockey Club has, after a thorough discussion, decided to give it a trial, and mainly, I thinkr because its use in Australia has been saccoseful. "Whether tho gate used there is superior to that used here, or whether 'tha man at the gate' there manages to secure satisfactory results I which have not baan attained here, is a matter about which I have no precise information. I only know that American experience with it haB been exasperating and disappointing, and that among the trainers and practical horsemen few will be found to dispute the opinion that it has signally failed to satisfy expectations and should, therefore, be abandoned and, a return made to the old method of starting. Starter Fitzgerald thinkB, however, that without a starting gate he might be less successful than with one, and might fail alto-gather. This raises a difficulty when we come to consider whether it would be advisable to discontinue it. We are now in the middle of the racing season and experiment, ordinarily hazardous, becomes more formidable when so many interests must be protected. Therefore, any radical change now is hardly likely, but a partial remedy might be found in the continuance of the gate without the recall. We certainly should get as good results as in Australia. Should it fail to give sasisfacticn, then the whole question of starting must be taken up seriously for solution." A meeting of the stewards of the Jockey Club was held at the Brighton Beach track Saturday afternooD. The cancelled contract between William H. Clark and Jockey Daniel Maher was submitted. Thomas Hitchcock Jr. was appointed steward to represent the Jockey Club for the first ten days of the Saratoga meeting, Tho following licenses were granted: Jockeys Elmer James, Louis Smith. Pete Clay, Spencer, Cogswell, William Crosthwaite, James Dupee, H. Hartley Eads, J. Hill, Quester Jackson, R. J. Mason, Thomas Smith and 5. Petermsn. Trainers Henry Behrmann. James Dumas, Charles Darsey, William H, Greary, C. F. Grady, William Hayward Sr., William Hay-ward Jr , R. P. Hayes, F. L. McFadden, R. P. McDonald, A. G. Neusell, E. T. Pino, J. S. Red-field, J. S. Ward and W. T. Woodard Jr. Tom Griffin made a mistake at Brighton Beach Saturday that greatly amused his enemies, of which ho has a plenty. It was in connection with the Choice Stakes, for which M. J. Dwyer's Trumpet and Shoreham ran first and second and his own colt Enightbanneret third. The incident is thus described in a New York newspaper: "The Beach crowd is essentially democratic, and cheers rent tho air when Trumpet and his stable mate led home the field. These cheers turned to hisses when H. T. Griffin, better known as 'the man with the halter,' bid up the winner to nearly donblo his entered selling price. Mr. Dwyer, who had been helped from his soat in the stand to tho track, retained his horse for $1,905. Mr. Griffin waB of the opinion that the Dwyer entry counted as one horse, and that as his own colt, Knight-banneret, ran third ho would receive half of any amount over $1,000 bid for Shorsham. But ho reckoned without his host, as the eastern rules differ from those in force in the wo3t, whence the 'halter man' comes. The Choice Stakes deducting entry feea and half the extra bid, which goes to the association netted Mr. Dwyer $1,017." John Miller, who is shipping horses between Lexington, Ky., and Now York and other eastern points, arrived at Lexington Friday with a load, including F. F. V. and VYaj3 and- Means. August Belmont sent tha stallion St. Bartholomew to his Nursery Stud and J. B. Haggin sent the three-year-old fall sister to Sir Walter to be bred to Salvator. Ways and Means has been fired and turned out, and tho operation will be applied to F. F. V. Hawthorne Rulings HAWTHORNE RULINGS. The official rulings of the judges at Hawthorne-in certain recent cases of notoriety are as follows: "On July 12 we suspended Jockey T. Rutter for his suspicious actions and being left at the post on the horse Uhler in the fourth race that day. "At the post his every action was suspicious. He kept pulling his horse up and around continuously, and at no time did he allow him to remain still. When the starter gave the word, to a perfect start his horse was perfectly straight and he deliberately snatched him up and around. "Rutter's explanation to us after the race was that the horse had on a new bridle and he could not at any time control him. The horse was equipped in this race just the same as in all his previous races at this track, and in his subsequent races, with different jockeys in the saddle, wearing the same bridle and otherwise equipped the same each start as the race in question, showed beyond any question of doubt to borery quiet and gentle at the post and willingtobreak perfectly overy opportunity, making Rutter'a explanation simply ridiculous. "His riding on various occasions has not beeu above suspicion and he seems to have a habit of getting left at the post on favorites, as evidenced by his riding elsewhere on occasions where we have officiated this season, being left twice in one day. "We are satisfied now as we were the day of the race, that ho had no intention whatever of accepting a start and that he deliberately got left at the post. "His suspension from all privileges will continue indefinitely and we further recommend to the license committee of the American Turf Congress that his license as jockey be revoked forthwith. "For inconsistent racing during this meeting we recommend that the entry of the horses Einer, Uarda, Hardly and Robert Bonner be refused hereafter at Hawthorne. James H. Rees, Habky Kuhl, Judges, Notes of the Turf NOTES-OF THE TURF. Danny Maher, tho jockey who was set dowu by W. H. Clark after his failure to get away with Banastar iu the Snburban, will ride the remainder of tho Beason for J. R. Keene, tho well-known horseman, and for C. Fleischmann Sods when Keeno has no need for his services. Maher has been released by Mr. Clark and engaged by Mr. Keene for tho season at m salary of $10,000 a year and a bonus of $2,CO0. The contract will probably be signed early this week. It is to bo observed that aside from Tod Sloan's successful riding in England the other American jockeys, Lester Reiff, "Skeets" Martin and little Johnny Reiff have also scored in a way that won applause. The deduction is that the beat riders in this country are, to say the least, fully tho equals of tho bast riders in the birth place and home of modern racing. The American entries for tho English Derby of 1901, are: W. O'B. Macdonough, 1; Sydney Paget, 9; Marcus Daly, 6; J. G. Follansbee, 1; John Daly, 1; James R. Keene, 2: Foxhall P. Keene, 2; C. T. Patterson, 1. For tho Oaks the entries are; James R. Keeno, 2; Foxhall P. Keene, 2; Sydney Paget, 4; Marcus Daly, 5. Tho Duko of Westminster has presented tho winnings of his colt Flying Fox, in tho Eclipse Stake, ran at Sandown Park, amounting to $42,500, to the Royal Alexander Hospital at Rhyl, Wales, of which he is president and tho Princess of Wales patroness. Alice Turner is a bay filly by Eegalis Lady Glydo. She was bred at the Patton stud near Stnrgeon, Mo. The late J. D Patton, Alice Turner's breeder, died in California last year. Mr. Patton bred and campaighed Ethel Gray, who will bs remembered as one of the best race mares in the history of the American turf. Alice Turner resembles Ethel Gray in many respects, being the same type of a filly that tbo old mare was in her two-year-old form. The lat3 J. D. The Lexington horse show, fair and carnival, to be held daring the dates of August 8 to 12, will beyond any doubt be one of the greatest entertainments ever produced south of the Ohio river, and in connection with their most liberal premium list for live stock, they offer several purses of $150 to $200 each for running horse3. Horsemen should take advantage of this opportunity to captnre some "easy money" and after the meeting freshen up their horses upon the abundant bluegrass at that place bsfore the beginning of the fall meetings around Cincinnati.
