PRICE, 5 CEISTTS Gossip of the Turf GOSSIP OV THE TDKF, Though what is considered the "regular" racing season in California does not begin until the two great jockey clnbs that have their tracks in the vicinity of San Francisco are ready to throw their gates open to the public, it is not to bo inferred that California is devoid of good racing until that period arrives. Quite a number of meetings of interest are given at other points in the state during the summer and autumn. About the most import ant is that given in connection with the California State Fair at Sacramento, which extends from September 4 to 16 inclusive. Mr. Adolph Spreckels is president of the society and Peter J. Shields secretary. Ton stakes have baen announced for the meeting next month as follows: For Iwo-year-olds: Tho California Annual Stake, $300 added; 3-4 mile. The Autamn Handicap, 300 added; 1 mile. The Shaf ter Selling Stake, S300 added ; 3 4 mile. The Sunny Slope Stake (Allies), 300 added; 3-8 mile. For three-year-olds: The Dewoy Selling Stakes, $300 added; 1 mile. For all ages: The Flash Stakes, $3C0 added: 34 mile. For tbree-year-olds and upward: The Vinctor Stakes, S300 added; 1 mile. The Capital City Stakes, $3C0 added ; 1 1-8 miles. The Favorite Stakes,S350 added; 1 1-4 miles. The Ladies' Stakes (mare3 and fillies), $300 added; 1 1-16 miles. Turfmen who design taking their horses to the coast early, will find it to their interest to make entries in these stakes and stop over in Sacramento where tho State Pair Grounds afford remarkably good training quarters. Liberal purses for the runners are also given to which entrance is free. The stakes close August 15 and entries should be addressed to Peter J. Shields, secretary, Sacramento, California. The yearlings of Applegate & McMeekin are to be auld in the paddock at Hawthorne Saturday, August 12, and not at the Union Stock Tarda. The sale begins promptly at 12:30 p. m. and those wishing to bid on the youngsters must go to the track on the street cars and not wait for the trains, as the sale will probably ba over by the time the first train arrives. Gibraltar, who has been laid up for several weeks with a sore mouth, is ready for business again. As soon as he gets on hia winning stride the Maffitt string will be in shape to hold its own with any stable on the western circuit. Tom Collins. Fireside, Osric II., Duke of Melbourne, Sir Bolla and Gibraltar have been tho breadwinners of the stable, although Gibraltar and Tom Collins have both been on the shelf more or less all season. It was scorching hot and the wind blew a gale yesterday at Hawthorne, but aside from preventing fast time tho dieagieeable weather had no bad effect on tho sport and the racing was by far the best of any day so far this week. An attractive card was offered and a record-breaking crowd for the middle of the week was on hand. A steeplechase over the short course was probably the main attraction. Ten started in the cross-country event and aside from three horses bolting, it was a clean race, as no horse fell and no accident happened. Boanerges, at 20 to 1 won and surprised everyone, even to the jockey who rode him and '"Bishop" Poole, his owner. The horse was always a rogue on the flat and it may be that ho has started in the same rolo over the sticks. He was tried at the game Monday, but proved a rank failure and was put in yesterday to fill up more than anything else. To say he fenced well would not be giving Boanorges the compliment duo him. He fairly Hew and as he had the most speed on the fiat, there was nothing to it as far as a contest was concerned. The old horse led from start to finish, and, although hard punished at the end, he won off by himself. Jockeys O'Brien and Stewart, who rode Che-nier and Pommery Sec respectively, were sharply scored by Judge Rees after the race. Both horses bolted, and the boys, instead of goiog back to where their mounts made the mistake, kept on and went the course. Chenier finished second and Pommery Bee fourth, but tho judges took no notice whatever of them in officially placing the finish. The third, a three-quarter, high-priced selling race, furnished one of the most interesting contests ever witnessed on the Cicero course. Newsgatherer, Montgomery, Flora Louise, Sim W, and Dutch Comedian flashed by the wire so close together that it was impossible for any but tbe judges to separate them. There was a lot of speedy ones in this race, and down the backstretcb, with the wind to their backs, they made very fast time. The first half was run in. 47 i seconds and the five furlongs in one minute flat. From the eighth post to the wire they stopped badly, but everything considered, tha race was a fast one, the three-quarters being run in 1:131. Newsgatherer on the extreme inside and excellently ridden by Vandusen got the verdict. It was another case of a big, strong boy ontfinishiiig the lighter ones. Newsgath-erer's race was such an improvement over hia last one that it set the gossips agoing and there was no end of scandalous talk among them. Miss Ethel McGnigan's sweot filly Unsightly ran ono 01 her iiest races and scored a handsome victory in the five-furlong two-year-old evont. This filly evidently likes Hawthorne better than she does Harlem, and there ia where tho runs her bast races. In this event the filly was bumped and jostled and treated roughly in general but she stood the treatment like an aristocrat, and bumpiLg her way through in the stretch won by about a length. In pulliLig up the filly wrenched Lor anklo and camo back to tho siaud quito lame. It would ba a pity if sncu u fine nlly as this happened to go amiss wueu aha is at her best, and oapeciaily as tha fall of the year is noar at hand. Sorruuo is "Ha ..kins' Uoss" now and the way he disposed of u good hold in the last race won for Lim uittuy new friends. Ha carried 109 poauus and eaoily scored a mile in l:lUl. This ' follow is liable to smash ttie mile record boforo the season is over. "Farmor" Kugouo Leigh, although in New CONTINDKD ON UKUOND PAUB. BOANERGES A GOOD JUMPER. (Continued from 1st Page.) York, won a race and also a bet on his filly Tildee in the opening four and a half furlong scramble for maiden two-year-olds. The filly carried 117 pounds and Caywood and won as she pleased. G. W. Poole is training the filly for Mr. Leigh, There was a big bunch of ordinary selling platers in the second race and Lucille Bramble, the 2i to 1 favorite, won in a hard drive from Cheesemite and Peter McCue. The winner belongs to John Brenock and it was his first win of the season, although he has quite an extensive string. W. B. Sink, Jr. was a visitor at the track. Bis horses, including Formero, will arrive some time this week. Ex-jockey Clancy got in from Canada with his good filly Tillie W. Page [2] DAILY RACING FORM AND SMERICAN TDRF CONGRESS RECORD. RACING FORM'S SELECTIONS. Daily Racing Form has no private information. It seeks none. Its calculations over the horses as they are grouped daily at various racetracks are purely those of general performance and ability as shown by the recoids and the application and knowledge of its editors and the reports of its correspondents. These calculations are printed daily. Nothing is hidden. All that the staff of the paper knows is put into type. If the selections made nightly are sought by persons outside the daily delivery lines of the paper they will be sent by Western Union night rate messages (collect) at $5 per track per week. Such service is not solicted, but if it is considered valuable, will be performed. I BIG YEARLING SALE. Monday evening, August 21, promptly at 7:30, at Union Stock Yards, seventy-five yearling colts and fillies, the property of Bunnymede, Spendthrift, Hartland, Leonatus, Eaustiana and Melbourne Studs and several individual owners, will be sold. These yearlings comprise some of the best from these representative Kentucky and Missouri breeders, and include brothers and sisters to many first-class tnrf performers.
