The track was lightning fast, a good card was offered and consequently Hawthorne drew a big crowd yesterday. The racu g as a rule was clofe and exciting, the first three finishes being of the hair raising order. Of course, the three quarter sprint race that had such fast ones as May Beach, Kensington, Slips Rowena, Newegatberer, Gcebl and Tulla Fonso entered was the attraction, but none of the other races was lacking in fascinating possibilities and everything taken into consideration it was a grand dayTa racirg My Bitich was favorite and won the sprint rare, but in doing so she bad to be fnlly extended and hard ridden to beat Kensiut n and Newsgathorer. There was a Jot of luck in connection with the w n of the filly. She was ridden by Nutt, who is a boy with good judgment and in the first pla-o was mott beautifully saved during a delay of about twenty minutes at tho post. Nutt also got the bst of the start and took the shortest route. This percentage j did not se? m to be enough to mke the filly win and at the head cf the stretch Nntt resorted to trickery. He was in the lead but May Beach ! was bscomirg very leg-weary while News ' gatherer, who was on the inside, was rnon n? well in hand. Nutt was'ed no time and ected cleverly on the spur of the moment. While making the turn he wont a trifle wide and tacitly invited Vandusen, who rode News-gathoror, to come up on the inside. The latter saw the openijgandb ingeager toeave as much ground as possible naturally started through. Quicker than a fiish when Newsgatherer got half way through Nutt pulled in on him and sharply shut him off. This put Newsgatherer out of the way and for an instant May Baach had everything her own way, bufbalow the eighth post along came Kensington on the outside and as the pair neared the wire she was gaining rapidly on the fast daughter of Bobby Bach Faithless, but luck was with the latter, j and staggering and out to the last oudco she manage 1 to last long enough to get the verdict. In this race Tnlla Fonso bolted at the start and was practically left at the post, but she set sail after the leaders aud overhauling them with an astonishing burst of speed in the stretch she finished fourth. The filly would undoubtedly have been a keen contender had she left the post on even terms with the others. An accident happened to Goebjl and he pulled up quite lame. For some unknown reason the ring took a 8tr ng fall out of the even money favorite Montana in the last race. There was some ugly talk before the race and this muBt have reached the ears of Jadge Bees. At any rate, he called Everett, who rode Montanus, up oa his way to the post and give him a severe lecture. Evidently the cautioning had a good effect, ad Everett baat tbe barrier about a length, and, beiDg in front by daj light all the way, won pulling up from Ractvan. Murat evi-ienily liked the fast track and the hot weather and in the first evet he ran the race of his life. Beaucbamp got him off in front and after baing with tae pacemaker, Lucille Bramble, all the way, he had onough loft to still off bh Harry Thoburn and Ed Tipton tn the stretch and win in a game way in the fast time of 1:261 for seven furlongs. Azna, TJdy Ann and Moot EBgle f-ught it out in tbe second race. This ws at five and a half fnrloLgi, and three of tbe f urteen that watt to the post were lefi t ere by the starter. Tildy Ann got away in front and remained npar there marly all the wy. She atd Azua hooked up at the eighth po3t and had a desperate fight to the wire, the latter rettirg the verdict by a nose simply through the action of tbe nod. Fair Deceiver won the fourth race, a dash of a mile and a sixteenth as Bhe pleased. Tbe ii'ly was entered for $603. bnt was run no to 900 by J H. Smith. She was retained by C. B. Mc-Le n for the usual odd fiver. Hegerdon wis wisely supported in tbe fifth race, and after get'iag through a tight place at tbe head of the stretch he easily disposed of the 8 to 5 f vorito, Caloocan. Jockey Davin has bsen suspended by Judge Bees. Bis ride on R civan the last time he started will be lookel into. " Gossip of the Turf GOSSIP OF THE TURF. J The Harlem Jockey Club Will contiaue start- i ing its first ra-ie of the day at 2:30 o'clock at the i cotni g fortn g'ltly moo ing, slchoueh at the : nxt meeting September 18-3'J the shorter : afternoon will prub b'y compel a changa to 2 o'clock. Six ra es are cn the card for Monday, the sppcial f a'ure beiog tbe event for four-yer-olds and upward f r an extra pur se of SjOO. the distance bein one and one-sixteenth miles. Colonel Cassidy will appeal to tbe courts and bis attorneys say that the developments Will be. sensational. A peculiar point is raised in that C lone Cassidy is a memb r of the club, ai d threatens to stand on his rights as a member, which give him enttaoce to the grounds at aDy time. He is har ily likely to attack the legality of the track bitting, as before he was disciplined bo stated that he would not think of resorting to such measures, though he had bean advised to. St. Louis Sporting News. When it was discovered that Willis Duff, or Duffy, was a ruled-off person and consequently not entitled to the trainer's license be had secured, the inc'd nt was made the text for ill-advised and unwarranted criticism of what would be smart turf scribes were pleased to descnbi as loose imUods in the administration of American Turf Congress affairs. This has ld secretary Ed Hopper to make the following conclusive statement of the case: "About two weeks ago I received information from Chicago to tbe effect that Duff, who was handling the horses of W. Huffman, bad no right to a license. He bad been rul-d off in California, and never reinstated. I at once wrote to Captain J. H. Bees, the presiding judsre, to investigate! the matter, and the result was that Duff V license was revoked. That's all there was to the case. Duff was ruld off at the old Bay Distiict track, whieh was in operation bef re the advent of the Oakland tr-cc. The Bay District track was not a member of th Turf Congress, aud, therefore, we were not officially advised of persons ruled of at that track I "Duff' apo.'isation for a license this year was propuly made out, with tbe necossa.y recom-mondaiiLni." Mr. George Voohies, of Lexington, Ky., has been spending some months in England. O 'ca-sional y he w rites to The Thoroughbred Record in interesting fashion concerning turf affairs in Engl nd. In a recent letter he says : "The racing at Goodwood was only fair and the attendance moderate for an English racecourse. As a fasbionsble meet it was a great success, all tbe nobility in the kingdom being there, Goodwrod equals Boyal A?cot in the m t er of fa-hion, but I cotiro 1 that silk hats and long-tailed frock coats that were universal alAfc t, wrro in tbe minority at Goodwood.' Straw hats, light colored derb'es and sack coats wer in order, oxer pt with a few old st grs. With Cnp day at Goodwood ended fa hrnable rscing until the Dincaster meetiDg in feptembir. Thn nobility are leavipg for the sea shore and Switzerland for a change. "As regards high class horses, the nnmber is small this year. Cjllone and Fly'ng Fox are tbe only topnotchers of tbe English tnrf, and I am not quite prepared to admit that Flyiog Fox balongs to the highest grade. It is true that he has acquitted himself wi'h ere it in all , that he has been asked to do this ye r with ; the exception of the Derby there hestargred. He was all out; the performance at a mile and a half was habby aui did not impress me with the idea that be could list for two and a half miles. "The best at Goodwood among the thre-year-olds and upward were Merman, Newhaveu II. and Caiman Merman, next to Cyllene, is the best horte in England over a distance of ground. At one and one-fourth to one and one-half mil s he does not show to advantage, but at two miloB and over he is a good 'un. Last seeson he beat Tbe Rush and Bay Ronald, two of the best handicap horses in England, in the Jockey Club Cup, two miles, rne-quarter and thirty-five yards, all carrying 126 pounds, and did tbe distance in 3:58, up the Cambridga hill It is idle for the critics here to say that The Bush and Bay Rona'd were out of condition. The time made tets all such nonsense aside. Merman, in 1897, as a flve-yer-old, won the Long Distance Plate at Hurst Park, two miles, with 180 pounds up. He won tbe same season the Caesarewitch St kes, and last year he won the Jockey Club Cop over the Caesarewitch course, and no his doable event, in winning the Goodwo id Stakes, two miles, on Wednesday, and the Goodwood Cup, two and one-half miles with 131 pounds up, on Thursday, places bim among the good oneB, and in bis last race he beat King's j Messenger, who won the Cup last yar and New- j haven II.. a Melbourne Cap, City and Suburban, j and Epsom Cup winner. There wef a two horses here that I picked oat last winter that I conld honestly commend to my friends in the States for stud purposes at a moderate price, and the two were Marman and Piety. The latter horse won the Manchester Cup, one and three-quarter miles, and the Alexandria Plate, three miles. In tno last race he carried 13i pounds aud did the oistacco in 5:26J. "Caiman, next to FlyiDg Fox. is certainly the bst three-year-old in England up to a mile. Up to date e has won six straight races all at a mi e. I am Bnre he can not go over a distance of gr und a mile and a q larter is his limit. Sibola, on the othor hand is a game mare and has a good turn of spetd, too "Haggins has two g od t o yo r-olds in Black-emi h and Domoc at. Thrt f rmr has. won four straight races and has never b en beaten. I bilieve that both he and Dern crat are in next year's Derby. BUcksmith is by Wo f's Craig, who was by Barcaldiue, ai.d is therefore j of the Ma'cbom family, and as there have been only seven horses of that family to win the Darby in one hundred and twenty years, the cbancPS for Blacksmith are very slim, and 88 the Seasatior s that have ben sent over not one of them has been found to like a long road. So I think that if my Lord William and Hoggins have any hopes of next year's Drby they must have a dark on by The Sailor Piiuce or Pon-tiac that has not shown up yet. 'There have been this year in England about one hundred and eighty American-bred horses, and niur ty have appeared on the fl tt, represented by men stallions as Order, Iroquois, Sensati in, Rayon d'Or, Midlothian, Sir Modred, Candle-mas, Rey del Rey, Locohatchee, Goldfinch, Hanover. Gol oi Garter, Teany, Dobbins, Long-Taw, Pontiac Whistle Jacket, Salvador, Knight of Ellerslie, Volante, St. Blaise, Hindoo, Star Ruby, Is'ingt n, Riley, Emperor of Norfolk, Saville, Bastetlaw, Darebin, Str"thmore, Top 'Gallint, St. Floiian, Hayden Edwards, Sir Dizoa, Troul-adonr, Watercress, Cavalier, Bob Miles and Lrngfellow. The American contingent have started on the fiat 202 times, have won 37 r-ces, 27 b'ing won by thote horses under Hug-gins. Thybave won altogether S121.39); of this Hoggins' stable has captured $112,095, leaving $9,500 to the remainder of tbe Yankees. "SenBRtion heads the list in the value of wins with 856,000 Tbe Sailor Prince with four winners of $21,550: then Locohatchee. with one winner of $19, 945; Pontiac, with seven winners, S11OC0 "Hcggins keeps winning right along. He is certainly the greatest traiuar in England. He is a master of his calling. Most everyone loses sight of the trainer and gives too much credit to the jockey. Of course, Sloan is a great jrckfy. Tbe condition and success of a horse, however, are due more to the trainer than the jockey. But tbe spectators never tee the trainer, and the jockey is in sight from start to finish, and the people never think that there is any one else connected with the horse. Nevertheless, the man at the head and the one to be praised is the trainer. "The position four jockeys on the horse is worth six pounds in a mile, and ten m a mile and a half over the upright position. You cannot drive it into an English jockey's head that one equal e foot of canvas has less pressure from the wind, which is made by the horse's spted, than to feet of canvas, as a jockey leaning forward presents to the breeze about one-half the sail that he does when sitting bolt up." Notes of the Turf NOTES OF THIS TURF, Barney Schreibor made no mistake when he bought Jinks of Pat Dunne at San Francisco last spring. Jinks' value has been doubled since her full brother, Mesmerist, has developed into tho b st two-year-old of tbe year. Mesm rist is thought to ba another Hamburg by many wll-posted horsemen. If ha should prove to bs as g'Oat a racing tool aa the son cf Hanover Bhowed him-elf to bi in his two aud three-year-old form, Scbrei-ber will have a highly valuable a quUition to his broodmare band in tho colt's full sister. Jiaks promises to win a lot of racf s for Schreibor b fore har racing days are over. She raa third tbe first time she et trted at Sa-atogi and won her next start a few days later. St. Louis Republic. While riding Bloodhound in the Bixth race at the dt. Lonis Fair Grounds yesterday afternoon jockey Geoige Lynch was thrown from his hoisein a collision aud died soon afterward from his injuries. The Committee on Appeals of iho American Turf Congress has rendered the following decisions in cases appealed from various members of the Turf Congress. The most important case is that affecting jockey Bose and employer W. Clancy. The decision is as follows: , In the controversy betwpen J. J. Smith and W. Clancy over the services of the boy Lee Kose, the committee rendered the following opinion: "In the case of the jockey Lee Andrew Rose, we are of the opinion tbat J. J. Smith is legally entitled to liis services, and it is ordered that W. Clancy be fined $100 and relinquish his claim upon the boy; and it is further ordered that the jockey Rose be notified to at once return to the service of J. J. Smith." At the spring meeting of the Louisville Jockey Club W. Gallagher, part owner of the b. c, Patroon, 4 year-old, by Patron Madie, entered safd horse in a race to bo run on May 4th, and after time to-declare Gallagher requested the judges, C. F. Price and L. P. Tarlton, to excuse the horse. After an examination of the horse and being fully satisfied that he was not lame, as claimed by Gallagher, the judges ordered. Gallagher to start the horse, Gallagher refused to do so and the judges ruled Gallagher and the horse off. The Committee on Appeals sustained ihe judges. In the controve-sy between F. Mi Arthur and the Queen City Jockey Club over the . payment of entrance fees, the committee decided that the Queen City Jockey CIut Wis entitled to the $65 held by the Chicago Racing Association. The case of James Robinson, who was ruled off last winter by the Crescent City Jockey Club, was referred back to said club for action. Page [3] Hawthorne Form Chart HAWTHORNE FORM CHART. Daily Racing Form has no private information. It seeks none. Its calculations over the horses as they are grouped daily at various racetracks are purely those of general performance and ability as shown by the records and the application and knowledge of its editors and the reports of its correspondents. These calculations are printed daily. Nothing is hidden. All that the staff of the paper knows is put into type. If the selections made nightly are sought by persons outside the daily delivery lines of the paper they will be sent by Western Union night rate messages (collect) at $5 per track per week. Such service is not solicted, but if it is considered valuable, will be performed. Page [5] St. Louis Form Chart ST. LOUIS FORM CHART. ST. LOUIS, MO., August 18.-E-'ghty-thfrd day.
