Page [1] John Baker's Good Race JOHN li AKER'S GOOD RACE. cc Harlom was knee deep in sticky mud jester- day, bat Secretary. Nathanson offered an extraordinarily good card, and the big half-holiday -crowd was tieated to soma high class .racing a 3t was a gocd day for favorite?. Four of them to won and the ring got a fierce drubbing. A mile and one-sixteenth special was the racing feature, ana although only four horses 61 started they were so evenly matched that it was almost impossible for the wise men to a make a eelection. The quartette that started was Macy, John Baker, Jolly Roger and King's Highway. Macy and John Baker divided thB play and a lot of money was bet on them, Macy 6 opened at 13 to 5 and was backed down to 8to 5. 8' There was some 2 to 1 John Baker but very, little and at post time he, too, was 8 to 5. Jolly Soger had a stout following and so had King's Highway. The race was interesting of aspect for about seven furlongs, Then, John V Baker, an extremely shifty horBe in heavy c ' .going-, came away and won easily. He was con- t ceding a horse of class like Macy eight ponnds t and did it like a gentleman. Rose rode John Baker, took him to the front immediately after c the start and rated him there cleverly. Macy C was always within striking distance and all t down the backstretch he seemed to be running s very easily, and from the stand it looked as f though he could run over John Baker when he 1 got ready. The latter, however, had a lot in t reserve, and on the far turn stole away from Macy. Burns, who rode the latter, made his move at the thre6 furlongs post, but he rever could catch John Baker. Macy easily beat Jolly Roger for the place. The latter is a i sulker and did not run his race. Old Montgomery has bsen in the worst kind of luck lately. He could run second and third t all right enough but it seemed impossible for him to win a race. He broke this spell of bad -j luck in the first event and after a most deaper. ate drive through the stretch got up just in time to nose out Antiquary. From the sixteenth post heme this pair had it hammer and tongs and it was principally through Burns' superior xiding that Montgcmery won. Dugan, who rode Antiquary, seemed to got tired when the pinch came and let the colt bore out. This cost liim the race. The finish was a very close one and a noisy crowd foolishly gathered around the stand after the judges bad hung out Mont- 1 gomery's number. The defeat of Goodrich in the mile and a ' quarter race was a hard blow to the talent. The horse seemod to bo Ihe best of the bunch, and, with Burns up, was figured as a good thing. He is a noted snlker. Goodrich ran kindly enough for a mile and seemed to be winning at the head of the stretch. Here a bumping match ensued. Goodrich was the chief aufferar and Joe Shelby appeared to bo the offender as to him. After the collieion Goodrich hung and sulked. In an instant Joe Shelby took the lead, and, standing a hard drive gamely all through the stretch, managed to beat Goodrich by a length and a half. It seemed natural that Barns would claim foul against Joe Shelby, but ho didn't, and the judges took no notice of the interference. That Verify is one of the best mud runners in the west was demonstrated in the second race. He was an odds-on favorite over Sam Lazarus UJsq. and six others, end won running away. Ho got off in front, and although H. B. Tobacco headed him for an instant down the back-atretch he was never in danger. On the far turn Vititoemado his run with Verify and Cahn's gelding opened up a big gap in fifty yards. After that there was nothing to it as far as a cc a to 61 a 6 8' contest was concerned, and Verify pulled to a canter won by ten lengths from Sam Lazarus Esq. The mile race for two-year-olds went to Hood's Brigade. He led all the way and after hard drive just managed to last loDg enough ' win by a half length from U'lorizar. On the latter Mitchell rodo a very bad race. He should have won. The boy did not seem strong enough to hold him together and he slipped : about all through the journey. : P. M. Givill won Ihe last race with Bishop ' Reed, but through winning he lost his horse. The Bishop won in an impressive way. fie was entered for $800 and W. P. Magrane, who ran second with Mary Kinselia, bid him up to $1,000. 1 Civill let him go at that price. The attention of turfmen who expect to campaign their horses in California during the coming winter is directed to the stakes advertised in this issue of Daily Racing Fobm by the newly-formed Western Turf Association. They are the precursors of others to follow later on and form a group to which entries will close October 25 and which will be run off before the beginning of the new year. They are all guaranteed Etakes, with the entrance and starting fees on a liberal basis, and should secure a big list of entries. The new Tanforan course is paid to be fully tho equal of the splendid Oakland and Iogleside trecks in its buildings and other appointments, and will no doubt bo the theater of stirring racing during the progress of its coming meatinga. All nominations should be mailed to Secretary F. H. Green, Parlor A, Palace Hotel, San Francisco. At an auction sale in the Earletn paddock, Saturday, the following horses changed owners : Bitter Root, b c, 4, by Royal Hampton Buttermere; F Frisbie $250 Tarsus, b. c, 3, by Azra Quindaro Belle; James Dunne 1C0 Tearful, blk. c, 2. by Burlington Rosella; S Schwartz 100 Crystyne, b. f, 2, by Donatello Nellie Wbittaker; B Schwartz 35 Bridgeford, b c, 3, by Donatello Ban Dixie; J R Hand 35 Prince, b. c, 3, by Wagner Sue Finnoy; L DeLong 25 Osterno, b. c, 2, by Pardee Day Dream; L DeLong 25 AlbsrtM., ch g, 3, by Fonso Cassilla; G Lyons . 10 In passing through Cincinnati en route to his home at Frankfort Jndge L P. Tarlton, in the course of an interview, gave the following explanation of the new rule providing for Turf CoDgress Stakes, a part of the added monoy to which is to go to trainers and jockeys He Baid : "A law was passed allowing any association that is a member of the Turf Congress to ask for any sum up to $1,000 out of tho fund to be added to a stake, piovided the club asking for the same will add a like amount. The stake is to be called Tho Turf Congress Stakes at each track. Half the money that is obtained from that fund is to be divided among the trainers and jockeys of tho first three horses at the finish, as follows : 40 per cent, to the trainer , of the first horee, 20 per cent, to the trainer of tho second horse and 10 per cent, to the trainer of tho third horso. Of the remaining 30 por cent, it will be divided as follows among tho 1 jockeys of the first three horses: 15 per cent, to the first, 10 por cent, to the second and 5 per cent, to the third. ''For example, a club asks for $1,000 to add to , a stake, and it is granted. Five hundred dol- OONTINQBD UN SECOND PAUB. GOSSIP OF THE TUBF. (Continued from 1st Page.) lars of this money is set aside for the trainers and jockeys. The trainer of the first horse will receive $200, the trainer of the second horse $1C0, the trainer of the third $50. The jockeys' share will be divided $75 to the jockey who rode the first horse, $50 to the jockey who rode the second horse and $25 to the jockey who rode the third horse. "The congress also voted for a number of bills for the relief of disabled jockeys, and voted to pay for the funerals of several who died during the year. Jockey Sherland'a funeral expenses of $375 were paid. He was killed at Nashville last year. The limit of funeral bills has been set at $100, Disability fees for the Harlem track alone were $9C0 for the season, and they were approved. Jockeys' fees have been raised to $25 from $10. Trainers' fees remain at the same figure." Judge Tarlton said the yearly income to the Tuif Congress from trainers, jockey fees and fines was about $15,000 a year net. Jockey Wilson claims that jockey O'Connor was to blame for the fall of Sakhrat by crowding him on the rail. Frank Fairell says that Wilson made tuch report to the stewards. If Wilson's statements are true then O'Connor is roturning to his old habits. His employers do not wish him to use such tactics to win races, and he should ba taught to do better. He does not seem to respect man or horse. In the report sent out that O'Connor was suspended there was no mention of the offense charged, but it no doubt resulted from Wilson's complaint. His suspension will be a Iosb to Bromley & Co., but it is the only method to bring a boy to his proper senses. It is to be deplored that O'Connor has this bad habit, for he is riding in fcrtat shape. Ntw York Exchange Provision was made at tho recent meeting of tbe American, Turf Congiees through which Washington Park, Oakley, Nashville and Lexington will not lose membership in that body because of giving no meetings this year. In view of the train of adverse circumstances that forced these organizations to forego racing in 1899 it was felt that it would ba a hardship to permit them to lose membership even temporarily, bo the operation of clause 5 of the by-laws was suspended for tho year with the proviso that they should each give a meetirg by or before September 1, 1900. Bedpatb, the two-year-old that ian lesond to Mesmerist in tho Great Eastern Handicap beating Gulden, Gonfalon, Maribert and all oft the other crack two-year-olds, will ba trained over the jumps. Bedpath is very fast and jumps naturally. Thomas Hitchcock Jr. will devote his personal attention to the breaking-in and schooling of tho Raj on d'Or colt.
