NO. 238. CHICAGO, TUESDAY, OCTOBER 3, 1899. PRICE, 5 CENTS Hawthorne's Good Opening HAWTHOKNK'S GOOD OPENING. Monday was the beginning of the end of racing at Hawthorne for the season of 1899. The handsome Cicero course will rnn for two weeks and then close its gates until next spring. Hawthorne has been most lucky in having excelUnt racing weather and yesterday was no exception. The afternoon waB warm and bright, and the track, wbile not at its best, woald have been faBt but for the lumps. Some -good time wrs made in the races. Capt. J. W. Rees was ab?ont from the judgp's 3 1 find and the racing was taken care of hy Harry Kuhl snd Mr. W. B. Letcher. Dick Dwyer, as UBDal, wielded the flag. The card offered was an exceptionally well "balanced one and eprinklings of clae3 could b3 found in every corner of it. The steeplechase over the ehort course and a condition race at three-quarters were tho principal feature?, and both furnished stirring contests. The Chicago race-going public seems to be fond of the jumping game, and when the field -went to the post for the steeplechase the upper part of the grandstand, which affords a most excellent view, was crowded to ite limit. The lot was well bnnched as it got away. Cheesemite took the load early and was the pacemrker throughout, but she could not stand the pre3ura at the end, and eventually finished second to Globe II. The latter was a heavily played favorite. O'Brien handled him skilfully. Globa II. is a beginner at tht game. 'O'Brien nursed him cleverly tho entire route and never made a move until the last feuce was topped. Then he sent him along like a flash. -Globs II. outran the others and won with something in reserve. Out of the six furlongs condition race came a Tattling good finish. Georgie won, but only by a noso and after a terrific drive all through the final furlong. The entire bunch seemed to break well, bat Hindoonet propped and Lord Fairfax wheeled and both were left. News-gatherer wbs the horse that Georgie nosed out and had he been ridden by a stronger jockey, the result would undoubtedly have been different. Master Dugan did the best he could, but Newegatherer is a heavy-headed, loafing hore and the boy could not help him much when the pinch came. Georgie is a speedy filly and everythipg considered, her price was false. Jackanapes and Tappau fought it out for the Dine fariong rsce and Jackanapes, principally through Burns' superior jockoyship over Boss, won by a narrow margin. Plantain, the fav erito, was overweighted and finished a distant fourth. P. Tomlinson & Cb.'s good horse Cherry Loaf was sadly beaten by a fair lot in the last race Cherry Leaf was a natural 4 to 5 chance and the public bat havily on him. He got off good -enough to win but Yititoe did not seem to be in any hurry to get home and the horse on his own courage finished fourth. Beuut-villo won the raco by a head in a hard drive from Catastro phe. On the winner M. Wobar roae a very bad" xace. The first race was an eay thing for Mr, Johnson. He was ridden by J. Winkfleld, and was backed from 4 to 1 down to 2i to 1. Mr. Johnson was cloee to the rail all the way, and when the natural spread of tbo field came at the head f the stretch ho easily went to the front and beat Del Paso II. After a hard drive Alice Turner managed to win the soven furlong two-year-old race by a meokfroai Fiorizar. In this race Avenstoko peneu at 4 to 5, but recede i to 9 to 5. Ha ran Hort and quit baaly under Burns in the stretch. Notes of the Turf NOTES OF THE TDSP. Major J. B. Malone, for several seasons pro-siding judge at Hawthorne, will sell in the paddock at Hawthorne today at 12:30 p. m, sharp seven yearlings, four of which are by his fine stallion, Forest, whose two-year-old daughter, Bit of Fashion, ran so well at St. Louis last summer that Burns & Waterhouee paid $5,000 for her and took her to 8au Francisco, where she will no doubt gain new laurels during the coming winter. Major Malone thinks the Forest Dina filly and the Forest Mesalia colt are fully as good as Bit of Fashion. Of the other throe yearlings two are by Lord Esterling, one being a full brother to Lord Weir. The other is a chestnut colt by Blazes. E. Scott, Kansas City, Mo. The short three-quarters at Brooklyn will be technically explained later. Tho Groat Eclipeo Course" at Morris Perk is a bead it g first furlong and five furlong straight. Tho courae is practically straightaway and all down hill. Tho Withers mile is the inside circular track at Morrie Park. The Main Morris Park Course is a mile and five furlongs up hill for one mile then level for half a furlong and down bill for four and a half furlongs. The mare Maxine, formerly FJeur da Lis, has gone amiss, and will not be raced again. She will be shipped to J. B. Haggin's Elmenaorf Stud in Kentucky. Sbe was a good mare when just right, and in heavy going was particularly dangerous. She won the $10,000 Burns Handicap in California last spring, and was shipped east for the big handicaps but failed to land any, though she won some quite creditable races. Hanover's yearlings of next season, the last crop from this gieit racehorse and sire that will come under the auctioneer's hammer, number tixty, of which thirty-eight are colts and twenty-two filiios. Of the colts eighteen are chestnuts, twelve bays, seven browns and one a bay or brown. The fillies are nine bays, nine chestnuts, two browns and two are bay or brown. His Royal Highness, recently purchased by P. J. Dwyer from David Gideon, has had a bad month, which has interfered with his training. McCabe is now getting his mouth in good shape, so that it is likely this high class colt may be seen to ..advantage before the season ends. Mr. W. C. Eustis has gone abroad to remain for a year, thus temporarily retiring from the turf. He has five horses iu training, including Thomas Cat, which, together with three yearlings, are to be sold at Morris Park this week. M. F. Tarpey has turned his fast Slly Novia over to A. B. Spreckels, and she will from now on race in his name. Galen Broun is training her. A couple of two year-olds by Eolo belonging to Mr. Torpoy are sick at Sacramento. Mr C. B. Hawkins, of Woodford county, Ky has lately euffert-d a eevera loss in the death of a fine yearling colt by Rossington Heckle, by Longfellow. The colt mot with some slight ibjary and died of lockjaw. Jockey Turner has applied to tho stewards of tbo Jockey Club for a lifting of the suspension imposed at Saratoga. Fow bolieve that ho will get the clemency he seeks. C. L. T , Milwaukee, Wis. The odds on Dissolute, 2 to 5 placa, was wired by our Windsor correspondent. In the local rooms the price was 3 to 5 straight. W. C. Whitney has decided to keep Clawson on the groona for tho remainder of the season. This applies to outside engagemants as well as those for the stable. Hawthorne Form Chart HAWTHORNE FORM CHART. As it was, Winkfleld got him shut off several times, but at tho natural spread of tue field at the head of ttie stretch, he got throi gb and from there on thoro ws nothing to it. Del Paso II., after being sharply interfered with at the half mile post was obliged to pull up and go around the others. After that be made dp a lot of ground and finished strong.
