Racing will be conducted on a liberal scale at Hawthorne track next summer. Stake events and over night handicaps for good-sized parses will be features of the sport. Manager Mc-Evoy, acting in the absence of Secretary Euhl, has arranged with the directors of the Chicago Jockey Club to open seven rich stakes for the spring meeting, which will be held early in June. Later in the year similar stakes for the summer and fall meetings will be announced. Entries for the spring stakes will be received up to midnight of Wednesday, March 7, at the office of the Chicago Jockey Club, 403 Monadnock Building. Hawthorne and Harlem will race alternately every two weeks, just as they did last year, but there will be a much closer bond of unity between them, all friction and cause of clash having been removed. If the Washington Park Club managers should decide to give a race meeting this Beason both Hawthorne and Harlem will close their gates for the customary twenty-five days. The revival of stake races in Chicago is well liked by horsemen, and promises to largely restore the sport to. the high place it has held in former years in the estimation of the paying public. In addition to this the purses in many •vents will be materially increased so as to draw out a better class of horses. A number o" improvements are also to be made at Hawthorne, the most important of which will be the construction of a new steeplechase course, the painting of the buildings, and a general overhauling of the track and struotures. The St. Louis Fair Association advertises the goodly array of twenty-five rich stakes in this issue of Daily Racing Form. The meeting at the Mound City begins May 12 and continues until the ninety days of racing allowed by the Missouri laws snail have been covered. The Association had a successful end prosperous meeting last year and in increasing its number of state* has taken the right measure to insure one even more attractive and prosperous this year. Besides it shows a commendable disposition to divide the profits of racing with owners. The stakes close next Saturday so that owners have no great time to waste in the matter cf Eending on their entries to President Aull. All ages and classes of horses are provided for in this list of stakes and under remarkably liberal conditions as to entrance end starting fees. It willbe observed that there is a novel feature in connection with the guaranteed stakes, and that is the pledge of the club to add a fixed sum to each. This is bound, in the case of numerous entries, to greatly increase the value of the stakes over the sum specified as guaianteed. The list is commended to the attention and patronage of turfmen throughout the country. MARK- AT LOCIsVJXiE. The date set for tbe closing of entri-s to the stakes offered for the spring meeting of the New Liuisville Jockey Club is drawing near, but little mere than a week remaining. The list includes the new and important Turf Congress Handicap, for three-year olds and upward, with $2.(00 added, the Debutante Stakes, fot two-jear-cld fillies, the Wenonah States, fcr twe-year-oid colts and geldings, tbe Juvenile Stakes, for two-year-olds, the Blue Grass Stakes and Premier Stakes for three-year-olds, the Mademoiselle Stakes for three-} ear-old fillies and the long established Frank Fehr Stakes for three-year-olds and upward. It is a list to appeal warmly to owners and there is no question that these events should be generously treated by horse owners. Louisville was the pioneer in the establishment cf racing en a modern basis in the west and for that reason if no other offered the Louisville Jockey Club should be well sustained. GOSSIP OF THK TURF. Encouraging reports indicate a substantial increase in the number of entrias made to recently closed stakes east and west as compared with nominations to the same events last year. A point of interest is involved in the comparative number of entries of mares to the Coney Island Futurity and its new far western rival, the California Futurity.
