VI. ]STO. 43. CHICAGO, TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 1900. PRICE, 5 CENTS GOSSIP OF THK TDBF. A well-known local tnrfman who recently visited a Memphis gives tome very interesting gossip about the horses in training at Montgomery Park. He says: "Charlie Patterson's Workmate colt is entitled to all the good things said ef him, and I think him a high-class colt, sure. He also has another fine Hanover colt out of Aragon, another by Knight of Ellerslie, a Deceiver, a Badge and a Tyrant that are far above the average. Lamplighted looks good enough to be a most important Derby factor, and as he a recently worked three-quarters in 1 :18, with big weight op, I should judge be is getting ready for the New Orleans Bine Blbbon event. I wonld select Sam Phillips and Lamplighted as the two best-looking three-year-old colts at Montgomery Pack, with Avenstoke, Thrive, The Unknown and Bed Cross II. next. Elisabeth Klein outlooks all the three-year-old Allies, and I don't think her ankles will bother her as they did last year. She is a big. mescaline filly in appearance, something like Yo Tamhien. Kentucky and Alice Turner are looking none too well. Next to Patterson, Schorr and Tom Hayes have, in my opinion, the best looking youngsters. Hayes' best looker is a brown colt by Victory, and be worked like a good borse last fall. He also has a good looker by Strathmore and a couple of nice fillies by the same sire. Schorr's best looking two-year-olds are a big bay filly by Esber, a black colt by Hindoo— Cherry Blossom and a colt by Faverdale, He also has a fine filly a fnll sister to W. Overton. "If lcoks go for anything Overton should stand training, and if he does the only horse I know of capable of giving him an argument is his erstwhile stablemate, the great Algol, who has also b en ailing with a thick tendon. His leg looks good now, however, and I believe, with careful handling, he will stand the training ordeal. The track is now in excellent condition and everything points to a most successful spring meeting."— Cincinnati Enquirer. The acceptances fcr the Lincolnnhi'n Handicap, one mile, to be run at Lincoln, England, on March 27, show a general raising of weights of nine rounds, the biphest accepting weight having been 117 pounds, which was raised to 126 pounds, according to rule. Of the Americans, John Hupgins has left in Betzak and scratched Chinook. Sly Fox, Stamina, Archduke II. and MngfiiDB II. are all left in. The list rf acceptances, with weigh tf, is as follows: Nanre. Neither is she a full sister to Prime Minister, as has been stated. Apozea is by Bishop— Patricia, by Vauxhall, and is a full sister to Percita and half sister to Everntt and Entricia (Prima Minister's dam) and Kingman, winner of the Kentucky Derby, Latonia Derby, Clark Stakes and Phoenix Hotel Stakes. Prime Minister is by Bishop— Entricia, by Enquirer— Patricia. I also wish to correct the report that Mr. Schreiber tried to buy Apozea as a yearling and went as high as $ 0O for tin filly when be saw that she was being bid in. As a matter of fact, tin filly was consigned to Maloue &, Prince's Bale, with reserve bid of $500 upon her, which figure, however, she failed to approximate, and she was not bid in at all. The following season she was consigned to be sold without a reserve and brought $210. Apozea was never tried or even broken prior to being sold."— St, Louis Republic. Mr. W. H. Clark, for several years past one of the foremost turfmen of the east, died suddenly Saturday night at his home in New York, He had been sick fcr some time but was apparently so far recovered that he was deemed oat of danger A sudden and acute relapse proved quickly fatal. His gerd racs horse Bauastar won the Brooklyn Handicap of 1899 and was the favorite for the Suburban bat was unluckily left at the post. Mr. Clark had the splendid Empire City track constructed and equipped last year at a reported cost of fully $100,000, it being the general understanding that it would become the home of the Westchester Racing Association when the time Morris Park will have to be given up arrives. His death will invalidate the entry of Banastar for the big handicaps of this year. Mr. Clark was a wealthy man and a lawyer of distinction. Count Hubert, vih'.ch won so impressively the other day and which is undoubtedly one of the fastest two-year olds yot thown, is the first winner bred by Prince Poniatiwski at the Barlingame Stock Farm. He was one cf the cheapest colts sold at the eile. Princ-» Ponia-toweki has a theory that yearlings should be fed on grain and cod liver oil to give them strength and stamina, and the three good races Count Hubert has run demonstrates, at least in part, that there is considerable merit la his ice*.— San Francisco Examiner. The Spring Hunters' Steeplechase at three miles, to be rcr. at Bennicgs dnricg the coming spring meeting, has closed with six'.een subscriptions. This event is open only to hunters owned by members of recognized hunt clubs ia Maryland, Virginia and the Districtof Columbia. The clubs takicg part are the Chevy Chase, of Washington; the Elk Bidge, of Maryland, and the Warrenton, Pine Hill and Piedmont, of Virginia. Bookmaker Joe Rose, recently warned off the Oakland track, is to be given a chance to defend himself. It wee ascertained that a notice sent him to appear before the stewards had not been delivered to him, to as an act of manifest justice the case has been reopened for a new hearing. His warning off was largely due to what seemed a contemptuous defiance of the authority of the club. TANFORAN PARK FORM CHART. dAN FRANCISCO, CAL„ February 19.— Fiftieth day.
