With the spring meeting at Aqueduct track to open next Monday, trainers whose charges are quartered at the various metropolitan tracks feel that tbe beginning of the "regular"' campaign is at hand and so are pushing their horses along as fast as is compatible with safety. Work done last Sunday is thus reported by Morning Telegraph : "At the Gravesend course the readying-up exercises were indulged in by pretty nearly all of the big strings, and the speed shown was much on the fast side. The neatest performance of the morning was furnished when owner and trainer Leigh sent the great mare May Hempstead a mile 1 :47S. The six furlongs was turned at a fast clip, and the daughter of Patron— Lillie Hempstead was eased up through the last quarter. The three-year-olds Vulcain, Ildrim, Nansen and another stepped the six furlong distance in 1:22J and 1:23. Of the younger division that were speeded over the fast track, Ziegfeld, Silurian. Lord Roberts, Silver Belle and others were allowed half mile turns in 524 and 53 seconds. The others of Mr. Leigh's extensive string got short breathers at half speed. "It was work day for the P. J. Dwyer lot and Trainer McCabe sent them over the course at conspicuously good clips. The three-year-old Rochester negotiated six furlongs in 1 :22. Half Time did the trick in 1 :24. Miller breezed the half mile ground in 52 seconds. Marblehead was asked a mile in 1 :53. His Royal Highness clipped off six furlongs in 1 :25. Withers turned the same distance at about a two-minute clip. The three-year-old Borough, with Terry McGov-ern's young brother having the leg up, got a short trip at half speed. Young McGovern has a good seat, and Trainer McCabe thinks that with attention to business he will make a rider. "W. M. Barrick's James and Lew Kraft got three furlong breathers in 44 seconds. McMeekin and a stable mate reeled off the same distance in 424 seconds. The youngsters of the string trotted and cantered. "Trainer Fred Burlew. of the Newton Bennington string, was among the earliest on the ground, and several of his charges were sent over the course in a useful way. The youngster. Bellario, by Belvidere — Madge Stuart, and the three-year-old, Long Isle, rattled off the half mile course in 51J. Bellario appreciated the presence of a running mate and stepped his paces gallantly. Olea tripped six furlongs nicely in 1 :22i. Antithesis reeled off a half in .521 seconds. "Frank Taylor's Waring got a six furlong turn in 1 :22. Precursor raced over the same ground in 1 :224. Tillo was allowed good jogging exercise. "Trainer Fred Mossom selected the day for a training one for his string of five youngsters. and they went through their exercises as neatly as any string at the track. Mary McCoy, Goddess of Night. Prince of Song and Mavada. going in pairs, negotiated the half mile ground in ESI and 53 seconds. Oudurdis rattled off the same distance in 511 seconds. Many of Mr. Mossom's lot are tiptoppers in looks, and as they have answered every question in the right way they should do him credit. "W. C. Daly came from his home on Daly's lane, and with a great show of bustle and energy, sent Leedsville five furlongs in 1 :04. It was the record of the track this season. Prestige turned the same distance in 1 :08. Several others of hi- racers were sent over the ground at a slower rate. "J. H .Carr's Elfin Conig and Wait Not clipped off six furlongs in 1 :21. The handsome Grey Jacques and a set of two-year-olds trotted and cantered. "E. L. Graves' King Barleycorn was asked a mile turn in 1 :53l. Blueaway, who looks most presentable, and another turned the same ground in 1 :54. The stable's handicap candidate. Box, and others got jogging exercises on the Brooklyn boulevard. "J. L. Holland's youngsters, The Golden Prince, by Prince of Monaco — Cassella, and Lief Prince, by Prince Lief or Bermuda— Natalie, who are in charge of trainer Ed Steele, did a half in 53 seconds handily. •"William Donohue's Standing trotted and cantered and got a short breather through the backstretch at half speed. Standing is looking in fine shape, and the trainer who prepared Lazzarone for his win in the Suburban, expects him to show to advantage. "Trainer William Hueston sent J. W. Colt's two-year-old. The Jade, a quarter in 25 second-*. "At Morris Park : Rafaello, of the Rogers lot, was breezed along at a good pace, but was not in any way extended. The two-year-olds in the stable occupied the most of his attention. Some of them performed creditably. At least four of the lot are capable of going to the half mile post from the stand inside of 50 seconds. "A J. Joyner was out early and his bones were galloped in the presence of David Gideon and John J. Hyland. The latter was funny and exercised his wit on Joyner's obesity. That genial trainer has expanded wonderfully in girth since he went into winter quarters. The lot in Joyner's charge show evidence of good care and skilful management. Etheibert. the pride of the stable, was permitted to rate along and cover a mile in 1 :48, the fastest mile that has been worked at Morris Park up to date. He is in superb condition, his coat shines like satin, his eye is bright and full of fire, and Joy ner thinks funnier things will happen than Etheibert winning one or more of the handicaps. "David Garrick is a counterpart of Ben Hol-laday. and the experts look forward to some excellent racing when this slashing son of Hanover goe6 to the post in the three-yea r-old division. The Chamberlain takes to his work well, appears to do all that is asked of him without undue persuasion, and yet many of the trainers believe that he is in the 'gold brick' class. "Maribert has improved amazingly in the last three weeks. He has shed his old coat and has already assumed his spring costume of silken hair, and William Oliver says he is good enough to go on dress parade on Fifth avenue Easter Sunday. The Lorillard two-year-olds were galloped and presented such an imposing appearance that the veteran John Hines mist x k them for aged horses. By the way. the latter has Lambent, the property of Michael Clancy, hard at work and is preparing her for the Aqueduct meeting. "William Oliver is in a quandary as to what he will do with his horses, for they are all so fast that it bothers Mr. Oliver to time them. Old Warrenton was meandering around the track, blanketed and hooded as if his trainer was giving him what the English term a 'sweating gallop.' A committee was appointed to wait on Mr. Oliver and ascertain what he meant by such proceedings. Sir William haughtily surveyed the committee, assured them that it was none of their blankety blank business and said : 'These "dogs" are going to make me sweat all summer, and I want my portion of the fun at once.' "At Sheepshead Bay. where the weather and track conditions were about the same as at the Gravesend course, there was some clever work accomplished. "E. F. Simms' The Kentuckian. who is an CONTINUED ON SECOND PAGE, WASHINGTON FORM CHART. WASHINGTON, I . C., April 11*— Ninth day. Washington Jockey Club. Spring Meeting. Weather clear ; track good.
