"While on my way from 'Frisco to New York^'' said jockey Spencer the other day, "I got hold of a Morning Telegraph which contained an interview." with Johnny Bullman, in which that jockey claimed Pupil would beat Mesmerist the next time they hooked up in their three-year-old form. I am not prepared to dispute that statement. Pupil may beat Mesmerist, but I know one colt who will beat them both and that's Chacornac. I'm not calculating on his last year's achievements, but on his present form. He's in grand condition, and will certainly have a whole lot to do with determining the value of three-year-olds. Any colt that can give him a race at even •weights can be set down as a topnotcher. I understand that Captain Hackett got Yellow Tail by putting up a bonus of $13,000 and giving up his interest in Sam McKoever when his partnership with Fred Foster was dissolved. Yellow Tail is a mighty good colt at a mile or less, and can beat ordinary horses at any distance. He ought to win some good races in the east. There was some talk out in California to the effect that J. B. Haggin wanted Yellow Tail for the stud." Gwynne, which won the opening event at Bennings Thursday ran in the name of J. J. Castles, an ex-outlaw, and \Y. C. Daly, who had earned second place with Christmas Carol, questioned Castles' standing to his sorrow. Early in the day he was informed by Secretary Hanlon that there was no grounds to protest the winner's right to the purse he had won. This did not satisfy Daly, and he asked the stewards to look into the matter for him. When they learned of his talk with Mr. Hanlon they were naturally annoyed, and Daly will be compelled to pay a fine of $50 for a frivolous protest. Daly, in his own behalf, says that he did not mean to lodge a protest. He stated that "he was merely seeking information." The Australian horses have reeled off some smart performances during the past season, the most notable for time and weight carried being as follows : The brown gelding, Surge, by Gibraltar- Delisk, won a mile and three-quarter race in 3:03 in the V. R. C. Handicap; Parthen-opaeus. by Splendor— Atlanta, won a mile and a quarter race in 2:07i, with 130 pounds up : Posi-tano, by St. Simon— Pouza, carrying 122 pounds, ran a dead heat with Bundook, by Carbine. 2:36, for a mile and a half; in the Spring Nursery Handicap. Altair. by Castor— Cissy, won a half-mile race with 131 pounds up in 47 seconds ; Blazer, 3. by St. Clair— Mountain Lilly, won the Electric Flate.with 114 pounds up,in MK seconds, and Conqueior, by Medallion— Stella, won the Welcome Stakes, four furlongs, in 46V, seconds, carrying 117 pounds. Four valuable events for the June meeting of the Coney Island Jockey Club will close on Tuesday, April 17, as follows: The Vernal Stakes, for fillies, five furlongs, with $1,230 added; the Grass Selling Stakes, for three-year-olds and upward, $1,230 added, one mile and a sixteenth on the turf; the Bay Hurdle Handicap, for four-year-olds and upward, two miles over eight hurdles on the turf, $800 added, and the Independence Steeplechase, for four-year-olds and upward, full steeplechase course, $1,200 added. These are liberal additions to the splendid stake list of the premier jockey club of the United States, and should, as they no doubt will, receive liberal patronage. Entry blanks are at this office and will be furnished on application. A visit to Aqueduct Thursday found the track and everything else in first-class shape for the opening day Monday. There has been a general migration to the Queens County Jockey Club grounds during the week, and stabling is at a premium, even on the outside. Many of the Handicap candidates are already on the ground. Box made many friends yesterday, as he moved with his old-time freedom, and it is expected he will be close to the money. Modrine is also at the track, and Firearm will arrive on Saturday from Morris Park. Six head from the Fleisch-mann stable will also be sent over by trainer Tom VYelsh. John H. Carr's horses received their final work at Gravesend yesterday, previous to being shipped to Aqueduct. Elfin Conig and Wait Not were in splendid fettle. They worked regardless of the weather, and the former is pretty sure to render a good account of himself if he starts in the Handicap. Farmers and others around Aqueduct that have stabling room are charging exorbitant prices for stalls. Unfortunately Superintendent Tucker is still confined to his bed. — New York Sun. Edward Walsh Jr.. and Moses Rumsey have been elected directors in the Fair Association to succeed Rolla Wells, who has resigned, and the l«ta C. C. Maffitt. Mr. Walsh is a brother of Julius S. Walsh while Mr. Rumsey is a brother of L. M. Rumsey, who has been one of the leading spirits in the Fair Grounds for many years. The Gcverning Board of the Jockey Club is scheduled to hold a meeting shortly, when the racing officials for the present season will be selected. Judges Murphy and Price and starter Bruen will probably be found in line again. Mr. Aull made an effort to secure Captain Rees, but the Memphis official stated that he could not come to St. Louis. He is wanted to act as steward at Saratoga and Sheepshead Bay this season.— St. Louis Republic. NOTES OF THE TURF. The talk of the Louisville track is a two-year-old belonging to Middleton & Jungbluth. This is a filly by Eothen — Quiver, which, it is said, is wont to breeze as fast as other youngsters at Churchill Downs run. Quiver, it will be remembered, was a fine filly five years ago, when she was owned by Scoggan Bros. But as a matter fact there are a lot of fine two-year-olds at the track. Brown Dick has a splendid bunch. Two of them, one by Esher and the other a filly by Spendthrift— Cinderella, are looked upon as among the best of the year — Louisville Courier-Journal. Daisy Woodruff, bay mare, foaled 1886, by Bramble— Daisy Hoey, by Tipperary, the property of B. Schreiber, Woodlands Stud, Missouri, died March 31. after giving birth to a foal by-Sain or Foul Shot. The foal was alive at last accounts, and an effort will be made to raise it by hand. Daisy Woodruff was the dam of Lieber Karl, and her loss is a severe one. For an apparently suspicious ride on St. Samuel in a steeplechase at Bennings, Saturday, jockey Dunlap's license was suspended and his case was referred to the National Steeplechase Association for further action. Dan Hanlon, owner of Sly, Fausturo and Mo- corito, purchased Jennie Reid, the daughter of El Rio Rey, last Monday, for $800. Jennie Reid is not very partial to weight, but is a good mare in the mud. The bay colt Kentucky Colonel, 4, by Kantaka — Nocturn, bowed a front tendon recently at the Bennings track and broke down badly. He is owned by Messrs. A. H. &. D. H. Morris. Typhoon II., after being fired and rested all of last year, will not stand training, and has been turned out by Trainer Bauer. W. C. Daly has sold to R. Knight the bay colt Dr. Parker, 4, by Laureate— La Tosca, for $603. WASHINGTON FORM CHART. WASHINGTON, D. C, April 14.— Twelfth day. Washington Jockey Club. Spring Meeting.
