Colt, who captured the $10,000 Champion Steeplechase with "Van Ship, and several stakes with that clever performer, Dr. Catlett. There is no better judge of a chaser than Mr. Colt in the country, and with so clever a trainer as Pat Meaney and capable a jockey as Finnegan the "green and white hoops" should again be to the fore the coming season. "Mr. Chamblett's" colors first became known to Metropolitan turf-goers through the victories of the Duke of Abercorn, one of the best cross country performers the country has ever produced. Last season "Mr. Chamblett" was most unfortunate, his best two, Diversion and White Garters, breaking down at the Coney Island Bpring meeting, leaving only old Mars Chan to carry the popular "cherry and white hoops" to victory. Under Veitch's skilful training and jockeyship the present material should prove more successful. Armament, br. g, 4, by Tremont— Armiel. Catapult, b. g, 4. by Magnetizer— Kate Allen. Hitchcock each season captured the majority of the cross country events, but the past two seasons cross country stables with higher class material have won most of the honors of the season. The stables this year appear to be stronger than usual, and the "all green" will in all probability be borne to the front in many a cross country event. Allen as usual will train the stable. Trainer Alex Shields, with his American Derby candidate, Advance Guard, and nine other thoroughbreds, arrived at the Hawthorne race track Sunday morning. The chestnut son of Great Tom was taken off the cars and given some easy exercise. He looks fit to go the Derby distance right now and give any horse in the country a good argument in the race. Shields remained in Chicago only a day. He had intended to go straight through to Detroit, but was delayed and decided to rest his runners for twenty-four hours. Advance Guard is looked upon by his trainer as a sure contender in the American Derby but he is making no claims at present. He said: "Advance Guard is right now fit for a good race and I have every reason to believe that, barring accident, he will be able to give any of CONTINUED ON SECOND PAUE. AQUEDUCT FORM CHART. Of course we know nothing of the others yet, but if Advance Guard holds his form, I think he will be worth watching. 1 have not yet made plans for the season. I am going to Highland Park and will consult with my partner, Mr. Carruthers, as to the advisability of going east before the Washington Park meeting. It is likely, however, that our horses will start at Harlem." Shields has a very strong desire to win the American derby and evidently prefers a campaign in the west to one on the ea.-tern tracks. He intends to give Advance Guard a rest, but the colt does not show the need of any laying up. Shields told yesterday how he secured the colt. Last fall he picked him up on the Canadian circuit, where he showed something as a two-year-old. He did not start him until he reached California. From the first the colt showed something, but was slow rounding into the form Shields desired. He was started November 15 at Tanforan in a dash and finished last. Then he received some more of the regular Shields training. His next start was December 4, and he won a seven-furlong race from good horses. Since that time he has been one of the most consistent performers on the coast. He has a mile in 1 :39l to his credit— good evidence of his class as a race horse.— Times-Herald. W. F.
