Kentucky Derby day is but little more than a week away and expectation of a great race and a big field of starters runs high at Louisville. As to what they are counting on there the Courier-Journal of Sunday, says: "A telegram received yesterday afternoon by assistant secretary Dressen from secretary Charles F. Price, of the New Louisville Jockey Club, will be read with great interest by all lovers of the turf, and also by those who love a contest. Here is the telegram : 'Memphis, Tenn., April 21.— D. F. Dressen, Louisville, Ky. : Scogpan will start both Florizar and Highland Lad in the Derby sure. Schorr starts F. W. Brode sure and will bring ten to Louisville. Charles F. Price.' "The news that Florizar, Highland Lad and F. W. Brode will start in the Kentucky Derby insures a big field and a great contest. Lieutenant Gibson, Kentucky Farmer, Thrive, Dieu-donue, Orontas or Hindus and Flaunt are al6o practically certain to start, and this would leave the following field to face the starter : J. C. Calm's b. c, Thrive, by Top Gallant— Elmira. J. B. Lewman's br.c, Dieudonne. by Magnetizer — Mon Droit. J. B. Lewman's b. c, Flaunt, by Forester-Display. George J. Long's b. c, Orontas, byAzra— Starlight. George J. Long's b. c, Hindus, by Volante — Ignite. John F. Schorr's ch. c, F. W. Brode, by Cayuga— Prosperity. H. J. Scoggan's b. c, Highland Lad, by Florist — Highlander mare. H. J. Scoggan's b. c, Florizar, by Florist-Czarina II. Charles H. Smith's br. c. Lieutenant Gibson, by G. \Y. Johnson— Sophia Hardy. Woodford & Buckner's b. c, Kentucky Farmer by Leonatus— Plantress. "Of course, there are a number of others which are likely to start. Among these are Star Bright, John E. Maddens colt, which, it is said, is being secretly prepared for the Derby at Latonia. Madden left Star Bright at Latonia, but whether he is being prepared to start in the Kentucky classic is a matter about which only Colonel J. E. himself could converse truthfully and intelligently. Then there are Benadier, R. J. Hiner's good colt, Waldeck and Soldan, the Middleton & Jnngbluth pair, Tom McDowell's Hi6 Excellency, George Bennett's Admiral Schley, Bryan Obear's Colonel Strathy, which is being trained at Churchill Downs; Settle & Viley's Caviar and several others. "At any rate, it is practically certain that at least seven, and probably ten, fine three-year-olds will face the starter when the red flag falls for the twenty-sixth Kentucky Derby. This will be the largest field in years, for it has been the exception rather than the rule for more than from four to six to start." GOSSII* OF THE TURF. Jockey Bullman said iu New York: "Sofala is certainly the best two-year-old filly on the coast, and may be better than M. F. Tarpey, the best two-year-old colt out in California. I rode Sofala in all of her eleven races and won nine of them. She was beaten once by Duuf ree when that horse got a flying start— an advantage of about fifteen lengths over her. Her other de-*feat was not to her discredit, either." "You must have laid up a tidy sum backing Sofala?" Bullman was asked. "Didn't bet a dollar on her. In fact, I have only made one bet on a race horse in my life, and that was a $2 bet which I made when I rode my fir6t race at Oakland on Lo6t Girl. Why, Bannockburu was at J to 1 in the betting in a stake race which I knew was at his mercy, and I won with him easily, but I had made up my mind not to get in the habit of using betting commissioners and I stayed off. This betting business is likely to get the best-intentioned jockey into trouble." A Sunday special from Nashville says: "A large number of racers received their finishing touches today and are now ready for the serious business just ahead of them . Some of the olders ones stepped the track at racing speed, while not a few of the younger division were sent to the half in winning time. The horses are all in fairly good racing shape for this season of the year. Among those that appear to be fit and ready are Ida Ledford, Looram, Ocie Brooks, Dumbarton, Oak Maid, Pharaoh, Ida Fordham, Alfred Yargrave, Rena Campbell, F. F. Y., Clipsetta, Mary S., N. C. Creed, Bell Punch, Kunja, Kufa, Lizzie McCarthy, Mr. Boffin, Bellamy, John Halsey, Colonel Frank Waters, Annie Lauretta, Miss Fonsoland, Quaver, Lizzie Kelly, Tip Gallant and the following two-year-olds : Crescent Queen, lnvictus, Clerita, Kahki, William Gerst, Terminus, Dominick, Donna Sea, Lelia Barr and Dick Thompson. There will be at least six starters in the Turf Congress Special, and nobody figures on fewer than a dozen in the Street Railway Stakes. The latter is for two-year-olds, and besides the Memphis contingent there are some first-class youngsters already here that will strip for this race. There will be one or two starters from the stables of Scott Harlan, Billy Weir, George Hendrie, Frank Bruhns,W. H. Jackson, Jr., John Brannon, H. L. Johnson, Gil Curry, J. H. Smith, Mannion & Connell. "Some of these two-year-olds have worked very fast trials recently, and the race should furnish sport of a high order. "New barns have just been completed, and 700 horses can now be accommodated. There are about 400 at the track. Some of the Memphis layout has commenced to arrive. " 'Texas' Smith and his stable from New Orleans are among the late arrivals." A colt recently arrived at the breeding farm of Burns & Waterhouse that is most appropriately named. He is by Mount McGregor — Shasta Water and he has been named Mount Shasta. The following is a list of the weanlings owned by Burns & Waterhouse : Altamax — Duckling, colt, Altamax— Crosette, filly, Altamax— Picnic, colt, Altamax— Paloma, colt, Altamax— Talluda, colt. Altamax— Happy Maiden, filly, Altamax — Sonomis, colt, Altamax — Juanita, colt, Altamax— Rustrice, colt, Mount McGregor— Decoy Duck, colt, Mount McGregor— Shasta Water, colt, Lovedale — Kruna, filly, Libertine— Berna, colt, Sweet Rose had twin colts, both of whom died. Among the new brood mares to be mated this year are Recreation, Napamax, Humidity, Bit of Fashion and Rachael C.— San Francisco Chronicle. Charles R. Bro6sman, the trainer of Imp, writes home to Chillicothe from Morris Park, where the mare is now quartered, that she will hardly be raced again until the Metropolitan Handicap, early in May, and every effort will be made to get her iu tip-top shape for that race. Imp is expected to be in form by that time, and should be able to make a good showing, although it should not be forgotten that it was the middle of June last year before she struck her winning gait.
