New York, April 24.— Jockey Frank O'Leary was fatally injured today in an accident which occurred during the running of the fifth race at Aqueduct. He had the mount on William Laim-beer's Randy. The horse had gone about a furlong after the start when G. E. Weight-man, who had been interfered with by Ross Clark, stumbled and fell. Pettifogger and Randy, who were just behind Weightman, also fell. O'Leary, it is supposed, was hit by one of the horses that passed over him. His skull was crushed, and he died before the ambulance reached St. Mary's hospital to which he was taken. McJoynt. who had the mount on Q. E. Weightman. escaped with a bruised back and crushed foot. Hewitt, who had the mount on Pettifogger was severely shaken up, but got off witl a few bruises. Weightman and Pettifogger were hurt, but not seriously. Randy escaped injury. O'Leary was about 25 years old, a native of Prescott, Canada, and was under engagement to F. R. & T. Hitchcock and W. P. Burch. He was a good rider and gave promise of developing into one of the first rank this year. The body will be shipped to Prescott, the home of his parents, tomorrow night. GOSSIP OF THE TURF. In the Joyner stable is Mr. Perry Belmont's Ethelbert. who is undoubtedly one of the most thorough gentlemen in his appearance and in his disposition that has been on the turf for many a day. He is today in splendid condition and could easily be wound up for the Metropolitan if his trainer desired to send him to the post for tiie first of the great spring handicaps. Mr. Joyner has reached no decision upon the matter as yet, preferring to send the unquestionably high-class horse along without aay haste, for, as he said, "There are many more events than the Metropolitan in which Ethelbert will have a chance to show his mettle, and that, too. at a distance where the three-year-olds won't have the best of it, as they have apparently had since the Metropolitan was reduced from a mile and an eighth to a mile, and Voter, Bowling Brook and Filigrane each won it as three-year-olds.'" William McDaniel has been brought from the west to Gravesend to assist Green B. Morris in handling the large string of horses he has in training this season. It is more than likely the stable will be divided, and that McDaniel will have charge of the division intended for a western campaign. He is a born horseman, a brother to Henry McDaniel, the clever trainer of G. C. Bennett's string, and therefore a son of Colonel David McDaniel, who, in the seventies, was one of the ablest and most astute trainers on the American turf. Mr. Pierre Lorillard visited Morris Park recently to inspect his stable, which is in charge of that clever trainer, A. J. Joyner, and all that saw him remarked the wonderful improvement in his appearance. The Rancocas air and the life upon the breeding farm seem to have benefitted Mr. Lorillard greatly, and not for years has he looked in better physical trim. Besides his three-year-olds David Garrick. Maribert and The Chamberlain. Mr. Lorillard has about a dozen two-year-olds, all of Rancocas breeding. It i- not at all improbable that his three-year-olds will render a better account of themselves this season than they did last year. Speaking of the uncertainties of the turf and particularly of breeding Mr. Lorillard said that during the time he had owned Hoodoo, the dam of Mesmerist, the mare had been barren the greater part of the time, and had thrown nothing - of any account, and that finally he had sold 1 her for $75, whereupon she proceeded to throw the speedy Jinks and that great two-year-old .Mesmerist.— Spirit of the Times. SECRETARY KUHL COMING HOME. San Feancisco. Cal., April 24.— Harry Kuhl and bride left here this morning for Chicago. D. J. Lynch has returned from Flagstaff, Ariz., to defend himself against charges of fraud in connection with local racing. NOTES OF THE TURF. Hon. W. C. Whitney, accompanied by his son Harry Payne Whitney, has been visiting La Belle farm, near Lexington, Ky., to inspect his horses quartered there. Mr. Whitney has Meddler, Lissak, Plaudit and some seventy of the finest broodmares in the country at this farm, besides a large number of young colts and fillies, weanlings, coming yearlings and two-year-olds, from which he expects to gather the nucleus of future racing stables. In a letter to a trainer at the track Thompson Bros, say they will probably send Sidney Lucas here to start in the Turf Congress Stakes. The presence of the son of Top Gallant in this event will make it less easy for race followers to guess the winner of this race. With F. W. Brode,The Conqueror II.. The Monk. Ida Ledford. Knight-banneret and John Halsey as starters the contest would certainiy be worth going a long way to see. — Nashville American. Mannion & Connell have named the two-year-old bay filly by Longstreet— Margery Daw, Agnes Clare. Other two-year-olds in this stable have been named as follows : Geisha Dance, b. c, by Long Dance — Sally Howard, and Davidson, ch. c, by Onondaga — Novel. The three-year-old Walter Spain, by Top Gallant — Lizzie English, is now a member of this stable. The three-year-old Major Domo— Madge filly has been named Domadge. The English Racing Calendar for April 5 contains a notice upon the subject of the starting gate to the effect that "the stewards of the Jockey Club advise clerks of the course to use the Gray machine at race meetings, as it is desirable that uniformity should be observed in the pattern that is employed. The Corandine machine has not worked satisfactorily." The following stables will leave Memphis Saturday for Louisville: W. H. Laudemann, John F. Schorr. J. J. McCafferty, E. C. Headley, W. H. May & Son, T. P. Hayes, A. G. Weston, Liger & Dean, E. S. Gardner. Jr., P. Tomlinson, W. H. Robinson, Hiram Pierce, T. H. Ryan, W. M. Wallace, Woodford & Anderson. Hiram Scoggan, W. S. Barnes. Frank Taylor's crack, Tillo, who was largely "on the shelf" last season, has wintered well at Saratoga, and has been brought down to Grave-send. He has not run since last June, but is likely to prove a good horse this year, and thus repay his trainer for the patience expended on him. His legs look capable of standing a strong "prep.'' Jockey Vandusen has signed a contract to ride Mr. H. J. Scoggan's entry, either Florizar or Highland Lad, in the Kentucky, Latonia, St. Louis and Washington Park Derbys, the Clark stakes at Louisville and the Himyar at Latonia. Mr. Orville West left Louisville for Nashville Monday with a string of horses. He took with him out of his own stable Nancy Till, Glad Hand, Tamarin and Prince Eothen, besides four others belonging to other trainers. I nstallatrix, full sister to Installator, has a filly foal at the Elmwood Stock Farm by Sat-suma, winner of the Burns Handicap in 1898 and runner-up in 1899. | Mr. J. Naglee Burke has disposed of Intrada I to Mrs. Mary O'Rourke. He also sold Im-j I promptu to F. W. Miner, who has engaged D. ' J. Lynch to train him. OAKLAND FORM CHART. For the benefit of the readers who did not know and follow me at New Orleans and Bennings will say that I AM ALWAYS ON THE GROUND and my information is the REAL kind, and my method of doing business makes our INTEREST AIUT-UAL. Am a commissioner, have strongest of paddock connections, see them work and race every day in the year and am in a position to know when they are "trying."' To prove I AM ON THE LEVEL, I don't ask for $2.00 per day in advance for information, as do others. I make no extra vagrant claims— can't make everything a long shot, and can't pull everything past the wire first— as do some other advertisers. With me a GOOD THING is one that UOISS THROUGH, regardless of price, but I am, of course, always looking for long ones. I have been observing the horses in training on the NEW YORK TRACKS VERY CLOSELY the past two weeks and believe conscientiously that every one who follows me consistently from now on will certainly get the money. I DON'T WIRE EVERY DAY, OR EVERY RACE, but just those that I think are live ones, so don't expect a telegram every day, or a string of horses in every telegram you receive. My only demand, and this I must insist on as an EVIDENCE OF GOOD FAITH is one (ONLY) deposit of 40 cents (rate of telegram from the New York tracks to middle states points) sent me in stamps or currency to insure me against loss by refusal of telegrams. Failure to insist on this in the past has proven costly to me. Understand, this 40 cents IS SIMPLY A DEPOSIT and will be REFUNDED when our business relations are severed.
