Harlem had rain and a lot of it yesterday and c. i consequently the races were run over a track fetlock deep in slushy mud. The attendance did not seem to be hurt to any great extent, however, and the grandstand and betting ring were packed. As is generally the case when a track is muddy close finishes were not in order aud the sport' in comparison with previous days at Harlem, was quite tame. The Junior Stakes for two-year-olds, with a value of $1,800, at five and one-half furlongs was the feature of ;iu ordinary card, which was greatly reduced by scratching owing to the bad weather conditions. Nine youngsters were named through the entry box Wednesday night to start in the stake, but Silverdale frightened them all out with the exception of Rome Res-pass' Grandon, and to keep the race from being a total failure Princess Tatyana and Sig Levy were added. As far as an interesting contest was concerned the stake was not worth one-quarter of the amount of money guaranteed ; but the public like to see stake horses parade, and although Silverdale virtually had a walkover it seemed to please the crowd, who applauded the colt and his rider, Bullman, when they came cantering home about a half dozen lengths in front of Grandon and Princess Tatyana. Tne aforesaid pair had it hammer and tongs for second place, and the Princess, driving and staggering, was beaten by a head in the last stride. The first event furnished the only exciting bit of racing during the afternoon, Paletou, a good-looking colt by Major Richards— Miscue. winning by a head from Matin. The latter was by far the best and was beaten through a peculiar circumstance. It seems that he is afraid of the wire which is stretched across the track for the judges' benefit, and whenever he gets near it he shys. Ezell asked the judges if it would be possible to have the wire removed before the race and explained Matin's peculiarity to them. The judges declined to take the wire down and thereby had the experience of seeing Matin duck his head just as Ezell said he would, and thereby be beaten. The air was full of vague rumors before the fifth race and it was common talk around the ring that Dr. Walmsley, the natural favorite, was not "meant" and Heigh Ho was whispered about as being '"the real jam.'' The betting had a suspicious look and on the way to the post, judge Hamilton called Rose, who had the mount on Dr. Walmsley, up and *rave him a good talking to. Evidently the judge's lecture had a «ood effect on Rose, for he rode a fine race on the Doctor and beat the supposed "good thing," Hei^h Ho, with ease. "Lucky" Baldwin's Derby candidate, Norford. performed in the third event, and what he did to an ordinary lot of three-year-olds was a caution. This handsome son of Emperor of Norfolk—Miss Ford, built on the same lines as his sire was, seemed to revel in the mud and won from end to end, being pulled up five lengths in front of Wax at the finish. Orion had an easy time in beating Little Reggie aud Abe Furst in the second event, and The Lady, with only 90 pounds and J. Walsh on her back, ran away from Molo and Erwin in the closing mile and fifty yards condition race. Jockey Euos rode a smashing good race on Paletou, winner of the first race and also handled Norford with skill in his race. This jockey does very little riding but what he does ride is always close to the money. For being late in the paddock with Astor, Lockhart Bros, were fined $25. Obsidian pulled up bleeding in the second race. c. i Christopher C. Chinn, famed as a starter, was among the arrivals at Harlem yesterday. "Kit" I is a member of the firm of Chinn & Forsythe. I " Senator Thompson ran away two miles in his I race. The gelding is a bad actor and his entry I will be refused at Harlem in future. Starter Dwyer did not use a barrier in send- I ing away the fractious field in the fifth race. I The crowd, despite the weather, was equal to that of Wednesday. Business Manager Miers I j said that there wasn't a difference of twenty-1 j five spectators in the two days. ] William J. Ewing, managing editor of the j Nashville American, who, fifteen years ago, was i one of the best known turf writers in America, I is in Chicago. In the old days Mr. Ewing wrote j over the nom de plume of "Blue Wing." He • had a famous race horse named for him, and the horse showed prominently in one of the Brooklyn Handicaps. Mr. Ewing is here for the American Derby, and is, incidentally, tak- i ing in the races at Harlem. More Derby Trials. MORE DERBY TRIALS. There was plenty of work at Washington Park yesterday, and Lieutenant Gibson did another sensational workout. Breaking from the half mile with a stable boy up, and carrying about 110 pounds, he ran the mile and a-half in 2:35S, the fractional time being 121 seconds, 25i, 371, 49i, 1:04. 1:17 J, 1:29, 1 :424, 1 :55l, 2 :09, 2 :224 and 2:35S. Garry Hermann, with Bullman up, ran with Gibson for the last half mile. Gibson pulled up strong, and without showing any signs of distress. Barrick worked James a mile and three-eighths in 2 :25 with Mitchell up, carrying 116 pounds. The colt broke at the three-quarter pole, the fractional time being 124 seconds, S, 371, 51, 1:04, 1:17, 1:31, 1:444, 1:571, 2:11, 2:25. Mitchell was pulling the colt up in the last eighth. Barrick was well satisfied with the work as the colt pulled up fresh and sound. Green Morris sent his pair a mile each. Silver Garter with Bullman up has the heart to work, and he did the fastest work of the morning. He covered the mile in l:421s, the fractions being 12& 24*5. 38 r,. *%, 1 :02, 1 :143s, 1 :28%, 1 :421.-,. Pupil's time was 1 :45?0, the fractions being 13, 26, 39, 5025. 1 :03;V,- 1 :16^, 1 :3C*s and 1 -Ab%. Yellow Tail moved three-quarters in 1 :17. Sidney Lucas had a slow gallop of two miles. He will work today. Advance Guard arrived from Harlem at 1 o'clock, having taken since 7 o'clock on the journey. In spite of the track being sticky and the rain falling he was sent a mile and an eighth about 3 o'clock with 118 pounds. He covered the route in 2:042, the fractions being 294 seconds, 441, 59, 1:12, 1:24, 1:38, 1:514 and 2:04i. Horses Sold. HORSES SOLO. Drogheda, that has proved himself to be the best two-year-old colt exhibited here this spring, was sold Wednesday by Owen Bradley, acting for Gus Strauss, to H. Eugene Leigh for $3,000. The deal was made by telegraph, aud one of the conditions was that the colt be shipped at once to Leigh at Sheepshead Bay. Drogheda was accordingly scratched from the third race and last night was expressed to his new owner. The colt is by Russell — Minnehaha 111., and his races on local tracks entitle him to be rated the best youngster here. He will, without a doubt, prove a winner on eastern tracks. Tom McDowell Wednesday received a telegram from Woodford Clay, announcing that he had sold his good three-year-old colt Philippine, that he recently took east after his slashing good races at Newport. The message did not say to whom the colt was sold, but it stated that a good price was realized. Mr. McDowell believed that Philippine was purchased by Phil Chinn for Jacob Worth, an east-ener, who is gathering a big 6table.— Cincinnati Commercial Tribune. Coney Island Form Chart. He showed a fine turn of 6peed, was well ridden, and hung on like grim death when the pinch came. Matin should have won. He was handicapped by Bergen, and a peculiar circumstance beat him with victory in sight at the end. Matin is afraid of the wire, and in his work always "ducks"' when he gets to it. Owner i Ezell asked the judges to remove the wire before the race, which they could not do, and, just as Ezell stated, Matin "ducked" when he saw it and it cost him the race. Ericsell liked the going and ran a good race. Bullman hustled Fred Hessig along for all he was worth in the first furlong, but the colt would not extend himself in the going. Little Reggie handled her weight well and ran a good race. Throw Abe Furst's race out. His performance does not represent his true form. There was little or no exciting action in the race the field being badly strung out all the way. Senator Thompson threw his rider at the post and ran away.
