Page [1] ^dcingGjfo Form \ VOL. VI. KO. 148. CHICAGO, SATURDAY, JUNE 23, 1900. PRICE, 5 CEm American Derby Day. AMERICAN DERBY DAY. Again American Derby Day. And for only the second time in seven years. Five summers have gone by since Rey El Santa Anita triumphed gloriously in the Derby of 1894 in which the gates of the big Washington Park enclosure have remained locked and the peerless track has felt no impress of the flying feet of the gallant thoroughbred. One year, 1898, served to give Pink Coat a place in the famous line that begins with Modesty and to-day will happily take up the long interrupted story of the greatest race of the western turf. No true lover of high-class racing, for racing's sake, will fail to hope that it marks the beginning of another succession of annual reunions at Washington Park, even more memorable than those that now fill an illustrious place in American turf history. The track will be slow at Washington Park this afternoon, but the fields are such us to assure racing up to the highest mark. People who go to Washington Park American Derby day, regard the races other than the Derby but slightly, yet it is worth pointing out that the purses have filled better and with better class horses than has been customary in the meetings of the past. Purses that are to be contested by such horses as Bannockburn, Modrine, Sam Fullen, The Lady, Larkspur, Hermoso, Fly by Night. Pupil, Onomastu6, Great Bend, Hand-press, Brisk, Castake. The Pride, Moroni, Sofala, Alard Scheck and Mauga are well worth going far to see. Fifteen colts are carded for the Derby, but hardly so many will start. Still, allowing for possible withdrawals, enough will go to the po6t to make up a splendid field, worthy of the highest traditions of the track. Owners have up to forty minutes of post time in which to make up their minds whether to scratch or stay in, the determining quantity being what this forenoon will reveal as to the probable condition of the track at the time the race will be run. Those now named to start, their owners, pedigrees and weights are as follows : NAME. OWNER. PEDIGREE. WT. JOCKEY. Lieutenant Gibson.. Charles H. Smith G. W. Johnson— Sophia Hardy 129 Boland. As is the rule, before the storm comes the calm, and the racing at Harlem yesterday was on the calm order. There was no stake event to make the sport up to the standard, and if jockey Bullman had not been on hand to show how a good jockey can ride the sport would have been dead, but as it was Bullman, with the talent knowing that he was better than the rest of the jockeys riding yesterday, took many long chances, and on the best horses won the last three races. The average crowd that attends the races has but scant chances of knowing accurately what is the first or second when the finish is close, but many of the spectators at Harlem yesterday knew something the judges had overlooked, after Molo had won the fourth race and made a lot of noise. As a matter of fact they were far out of line, and when the judges hung out Molo's number they made no mistake. Bullman rode Molo and he handled him to perfection, but when the pinch came, instead of winning off by himself he took matters easily and beat Brulare only a neck. The jumping race was a joke and Viking, a 6 to 1 chance, won all the way. T. Casey rode Viking, and the way he handled him impressed everyone that saw the race. The jockey took his mount to the front shortly after the start and won all the way. Tenny Belle, by Tenny— Ma Belle, was a soft thing in the first race and with Enos up she won all the way. Tenny Belle was a# 2i to 1 and it was a shame to take the money. Enos, after getting off third with her, did not waste much time, winning by ten lengths very easily. Tildy Ann beat Woodtrice by a nose in the second race, but Tildy Ann's win was a lucky one, and the second horse was much the better of the two. Sannazaro, a handsome looking colt by Pirate of Penzance, won the fifth event by a head from Harry Herendeen. After the last race at Harlem yesterday Sam Wagner boosted the price of Walkenshaw, entered to be sold at $600, to $S0O, but Harry Rob-inson retained his good black horse with the usual $5 bid. Jockey P. McAuliffe wa6 warned off tho track at Harlem yesterday by the judges for presenting a forged jockey license. Secretary Nathan-son wrote to the Turf Congress, recommending that no license be granted McAuliffe, should he apply for one. Owing to the action against McAuliffe Corillo was scratched in the steeplechase. In going over the last jump, Durwad, with Barton up, fell and rolled over the jockey, From the grand-stand it appeared as if it were all over with Barton. However, fifteen minutes later, Barton was enjoying a big meal in the restaurant. He sustained a very slight cut under the chin as a result of the fall and mkx-up. 1 I 1 . ) ) * AM ERICAN SPORTING MANUAL. Doss & Co., from the decision of the stewards of the Western Turf Association, awarding purse to the horse Dunblane in race run at Tanforan, December 5, 1899, the Committee on Appeals of the Ameri-1. can Turf Congress has rendered the following opinion: "F. VY. Doss &. I'o. complied fully with Bule 70 in making entry of their horse, and, so far as the papers show, in registering with the secretary ; but Jennings was not part owner of '"Dunblane" and the entry of the horse in the name of Jennings only was not in conformity with that part of Rule 70, requiring every entry to be made ''in the name of a person having ownership in tbe horse," Jennings' interest in the horse '"Dunblane" was in tbe winnings only, which, by Rule 54 does not constitute him an owner. The protest o'f Doss tk Co. was roper and should have been sustained. The E nding of the Western Turf Association is reversed and that a-sociation will pay first money of the purse to said Doss fc Co. E. C. Hopper, Secretary. Page [2] Daily Racing Form ...AND THE... The underlying principles and only road by which you can take advantage of the great opportunities offered by horse racing is reached through a knowledge of percentage, and the relative value of the odds. On these lines I have formulated a method of rare excellence and of which the Chicago Chronicle says : A system of great originality. All risk of losing is removed from betting. Chicago Tribune: A scientific method for successful betting. Cin cinnati Enquirer: New features introduced for successful betting. Cincinnati Times-Star: A system based on sound and conservative principles. Nashville American: A method full of live and interesting information. The application of percentage is a feature new in betting and has intrinsic value. By its use I guarantee to demonstrate a method that will win as high as 57 per cent, in one week without a possibility of loss. PRICE, $2.00 Address F. A. BELT, CINCINNATI, OHIO. P. O. Box 803.
