Page [1] Worth's Second Day. WORTHS SECOND DAY After the storm a calm and it was ex ¬ tremely calm at Worth yesterday after the rousing opening the handsome new track had Thursday ThursdayThere There was a big crowd out perhaps 3000 but it waa not of the holiday seeking nature and although five of the six winners were strongly backed and the ring given a severe scorching there was little enthusiasm displayed displayedMr Mr George C Bennett the popular horse horseowner owner and bookmaker from Memphis had a aood ood day with his horses winning two races raceswith with Ed Austin and Hemps and finishingsocond finishingsocondand and third with Aransae and MerrimanJ MerrimanJMr Mr Bennett bets well on his own when he thinks he is right and over the victory of Ed Austin he won well Ed Austin is a handsome black colt by Wagner May Kennedy thereby being a half brother to the famous sprinter OConnell and from all indications is a cracker jack The youngster is named after Mr Ben ¬ netts right hand man Eddie Austin who ia well known all over the country as one of the biggest bookmakers in the business and with the Bennett contingent considerable sentiment is attached to the colt All during the winter and early spring sensational reports had been sent out from training quarters about Ed Austin and it was expected he would win a stake or purse at the Memphis meeting but somehow or other he was never sent to the post on the south ¬ ern track and made his initial bow to the racing public in yesterdays first race at Worth Those that keep close watch and read up on the early doings of youngsters each year were well ac ¬ quainted with the colt and looked for him to be a hot favorite in with maidens as he was but for some unknown reason the usually careful pencilers were caught out of line and the first quotations against Ed Austin were 3 to 1 This price did not last long however and at post time 7 to 5 was the best odds obtainable against him Cobnrn rode the good thing and get ¬ ting away fourth soon worked his way to the iront and headed for home two lengths and a half in the lead At the eighth post Coburn looked over hie shoulder and seeing nothing near him began easing up This made it ap ¬ pear to the inexperienced ones that the colt was tiring and Miracle II who came rather fast at the end gave them a scare but Coburn knew what he was about and landed first past the post threequarters of a length in advance of Mrs Bradleys filly fillyFollowers Followers of form backers of good things and in fact everyone in general was given a set back in the third race This was under selling con ¬ ditions at threequarters of a mile and had eight starters all of which were fancied more or less with the exception of Do Madge This horse is said to be a snlker and perhaps is but with Jess Mathows up and 20 to 1 she forgot all about sulking and after being last but one when passing the half mile ground she skimmed the rails on the turns and came home by herself Princess Tatyana with Dominick up was sup ¬ posed to be the goods in this race but after being prominent for about a quarter of a mile she collapsed in a heap and finished absolutely last lastIn In Yana James Arthur has certainly a sweet filly and one that can hold her own almost any ¬ where She appeared to be in a soft spot in the five furlongs twoyearold filly race and was Her opening price of 2 to 5 was hurriedly cut to 1 to 3 and at that price a ton of money was bet on her There were only five starters in the race and Yana got away third but quicker than a wink she shot to the front and setting a good hot paco for the first half eventually won well in hand by aboutthree lengths SLady Bird who was thought to be Yanas most formidable competitor met with an accident that ruined whatever chance she may have had Shortly after passing the halfmile post her bridle slipped and after that Birkenrnth did well to stick on let alone being of any help to the filly fillyJuke Juke Markloin and his friends cleaned up well on Bengal ia the second race The Ben Strome Begum gelding was thought pretty well of as a twoyearold around here last sum ¬ mer but his racing this spring has been very ordinary and although he was in with the cheapest lot of selling platers the ring was willing to offer 2 to 1 against him It seemed that everyone had a tip oh Bengal and from 2 to 1 he was cut to 9 to 5 then to 8 to 5 and finally closed at 7 to 5 He got away all tangled up and never really got himself together until after passing the halfmile post then Bengal was very much in evidence Still it seemed dubious for him on the stretch turn where John Qrigsby was winging out in front by three lengths Once straightened out for home however the Marklein gelding quickly overhauled Qrigsby and in a mild drive beat him by an open length lengthThere There were all sorts of rumors afloat previous to the fourth race one was that Monos was hardly ready another that there was nothing doing on Patroon and again more than likely Sculptress would run away with Qormley while at the post These rumors frightened the pub ¬ lic off and consequently speculation on the race was extremely light Monos however was ready and won from end to end Sculptress did not run away with Qormley and finished third but from the way Master J Baker handled Patroon there might have been noth ¬ ing doing on him and he dropped in fourth The judges did not like Bakers ride and called him into the stand after the race but the poor green boy told the truth and stated that he was riding to instructions and that was all there was to it itIt It was Pirates Queen and nothing but Pirates Queen from beginning to end in the closing one mile and twenty yards selling race This consistent filly was a 7 to 10 favorite and many combinations wound up on her Conse ¬ quently when she came home safely leading the hearts of many pikers were gladdened Second to Pirates Queen was Bed Apple on whom a midget named Rice rode a desperate race The youth was bent on getting through on the inside on the first turn and taking his life in his hands he managed to do so From the way Red Apple bumped into and jumped on horses it is a wonder that he did not throw some other horse or go down himself but fort ¬ unately nothing of this nature happened happenedJ J J Sellers was fined 5 for sending Mr Smith to the post with wrong colors in the sec ¬ ond race raceJ J D Clayton with Caviar Brannigan and the rest of W L Lansings string arrived at Worth yesterday yesterdayThe The judges fined Mr Sweet 10 for running Patroon in KINLOCH WILL ASK FOR DATES At the regular monthly meeting to be hold by the Stewards of tho Western Jockey Clnb Mon ¬ day May Gth application will be made by the Kinloch Park Association of St Louis Mo for dates commencing May 25th and continu ¬ ing ninety days daysThe The reason for not granting tho dates pre ¬ viously asked for was that the stewards did not care to grant dates conflicting with Louis ¬ ville and Latonia Sain's High Promise. SAINS HIGH PROMISE Barney Schreibsr is likely to ba made rich and famous as a brooder if tho progeny of his richly bred young sire Sain keep coming on up to the samples so far shown this year The deeds of Corrigan and Zirl in California alone would suffice to give any sire distinction but another good one was uncovered at St Louis Thursday of which yesterdays Republic says saysRacing Racing at the Fair Grounds yesterday was signalized by the debut of another sensational colt eired by the great Sain Otis a seal brown horse with white socks a star and snip won the 2yearold event in a common gallop from a good field He was the third of Sains progeny to face the starter and the third to pass the wire not only winner but so thoroughly BO as to greatly impress his value and class upon those who saw the race After Otis pulled up yesterday every one said He is the best horse Schreiber over owned ownedAlthough Although the Australian horse Foul Shot disputes with Sain the honor of siring Otis it is plain that the colt is a son of Sain Ho looks like him has tho same high impress of char actor about the head is turned about tho body like his sire and is in every way nnliko the handsome but hitherto impotent race horses the dingo sire Foul Shot has begotton since he came to St Louis County CountyOn On the strength of tho great record made by Corrigan and Zirl a son and daughter of Sain Otis was made a warm favorite in the race He was opened at 6 to 1 Though it was his first start and though the card said ho was sired by Foul Shot or Sain the bettors took it for granted that Sain was his siro On the simple strength of this they backed the colt to even money in a jiffy When he camo to the post those who know Sain at once recognized Otis as his son He bore the mark of Vere do Vere Three swallows do not make a summer and it may be that throe winning colts of ex ¬ ceptional merit do not make Sain a great sire But it is no mean feather in the cap of a seven yearold horso two years in the stud to siro three winners in three twoyearolds all of them apparently horses of exceptional merit Pocket Form Books.
