Page [1] Robert Waddell's Derby. EOBEET WADDELL B G BT ALOHA TIEGIE ROBERT TVADDELIS DERBY Another poor mans horse Robert Waddell won the fourteenth American Derby Two rec ¬ ords were broken The race was run in 233J or 2 5 seconds faster than the hitherto fastest Derbies by Boundless in 1893 and by Rey el Santa Anita in 1894 The attendance was over 50000 There were eight or ten thousand good folks more than the short 43000 of the Worlds Fair or Boundless year The superb throng of all grades with the glitter ana grace of the club house galleries and lawns and beauty of feminity and equipages of the infield should have furnished a sharp object leeson to the so called reformers who eeek to ruin the noble sport of racing at the dictation of spiteful and ruinous interests The Derby itself was a noble centerpiece to a superb days racing over an elastic course of great speed and around it was woven a bright wreath of public applause that embraced the horses and jockeys and every ¬ thing that pertained to them The beauty and fashion of the west and south were in the stands and men who do the great things of American life jostled each other to enjoy the candidates and decided that His Eminence was the prettiest After the Derby bad been run and won the throng rose at Robert Waddell and Bnllman as the latter came back t9 weigh out Later came a handsome floral piece for Bnllman and Mr Bradley got into the enthu ¬ siasm as he caught his geldings handsome head and threw his arm over Robert Waddells neck Bradley knew he would win owners of Derby winners always do and Bnllman was glad and looked as well as said so be ¬ cause a really artistic and patient piece of riding had met its reward He earned S25CO by his work Mr Bradley gave him 2000 and Frank Farrell gave him 500 more because he hadnt need him but Nash Turner on Bonnibert The public backed Rob ¬ ert Waddell loyally It liked him for what he had done under its own eye Its notions of form doesnt go to niceties about track pecu ¬ liarities running out and that elastic quantity known as class It knew from Waddells trials that Waddell was good and it knew that when good Waddell is fast and can beat horses credited with more class than he Theres a lot of lugs and frills about this Derby and its surrounding racing action Of course there was betting on the races It was unpublic and unhandy but vigorous and of great volume At fifty or more spots of the great betting shed where there once were seventy or eighty bookmaking slates displayed one could bet at the inling odds on his choice in each race There was an eager mass of humanity within the shed all the afternoon the ring on the Derby alope and twice as much on the afternoon The paddock at Washington Park waB always a joy with its clean order It lerity watched rwith keen Interest class talk Waddell km run fast and is game and Im going to bet on him said a Haw thorneite of experience He represented a 191 of hardheaded racegoers The same public punished the future books which have steadily ruary last About all the money taken on the horses will be paid out and in the case of Jas OLeary whose book over the race was by far the largest ever made in this country far more Such is public opinion and loyalty over a horse I The Derby betting was of immense volume Everyone seemed to want an interest in the big I ROBERT WADDELLS DERBY Continued from First Page ovent Some of the betting sheds denizens chose to duck the second race and use the time to accjmodato their Derby customers The Parader was always favorite The eastern contingent split on him and Bounibert the steady second choice The Sadie 8 party sent more money after that already bet on her and forced down her price The Schorrs bat on Silverdale and the western sharpshooters held the prices on Terminus and His Eminence steady Six Shooters support camo from the Kentucky folks It was not light in volume either eitherThe The story of the race for the Derby worth 24575 and 19575 not to the winner is eoon told The eastern colts generally believed to outclass the western brigade did not The sec ¬ tional clamor of the vociferous and claimful east drowned tho sense of the west and painted a false and costly picture The field was re ¬ duced to ten when the timber marred in prep ¬ aration was cleared away Four of the carded horses did not go to the post They were Lady Schorr who had fallen into lameness through her too sharp preparation Brntal who was not nearly fit Jiminez who was not good enough for the Derby but was for the opening condition race and Lady Strathmore who hardly seemed to be proper for such company and such a task taskThera Thera were but ten minutes spent at the post Then Mr Dwyer got the horses away in fine alignment Once in racing action around the turn and into the stretch a quarter of a mile out Robert Waddell was in front well in Bull mans hands He had got away comfortably in eighth place but on his stride and had moved through his horses But The Parader was rank and raced past the leader as they passed the etand Nearly two lengths of daylight were between the bunch behind led by Silverdale Bonnibert Sadie 8 and Terminus lapped in a bright group To and around the clubhouse turn The Parader rank of speed still drew out and away and he was well clear of the others and running strong through the backstretch and to the half mile ground Robert Waddell going easily was two lengths before the others and Terminus was jnst clear of the fast moving Six Shooter who was clear of Bonnibert and Sadie S The lat ¬ ter was done going to the turn and Bonnibert took her place Around the turn Bnllman began his move on Robert Waddell and as the horses passed the threequarter post a mile and a quarter out the Bradley geldings head was at the busy Piggotts side and the race was over On callRobert Wad ¬ dell raced past the tiring favorite and com ¬ ing on won in handy fashion by a half length of clear daylight ridden out for safetys sake Terminus coming through tho stretch strong and true under Master Cobnrn caught and beat The Parader who was fast tiring and was sec ¬ ond just clear of him Then came Bonnibert who could never get into the sham action of contention and His Eminence as dnll a figure in the race as Bonnibert Sannazaro who ran honestly for what he could do came next before the flashy but unreasonably backed Sadie S leading Bean Gallant who ran to his 1901 form Silverdale who didnt and Six Shooter who ran a good mile and stopped It was a high class race won in a high class way by the best horse horseThe The other races generally went to the beet and fastest horses The Derby record was broken and in the fifth race Endurance by Bight the favorite and a highclass filly dis ¬ placed the four and a half furlong rec9rd of Knutncky Colonel 541 second by winning in 54 seconds secondsCaviar Caviar always the favorite won the first race at a mile in I40Hs laia a Marcus Dalybred cplt from the east landed the second by a dazzling burst of speed in the stretch Federal beat a fair field in the fourth race at seven and a half furlongs in 1 35 and Tom Barretts Bar ¬ rack at long odds beat Poasart and a fair lot in tho last race
