Page [1] Robert Waddell Wins Again. HOBERT tVdDDElI VIFS AGAIN AGAINAs As if to show the public that Robert Wad dells victory in the Derby was as it should have been and that his gelding was an all round race horse Mr Bradley started him in the fifth race at Washington Park yesterday It was one of those made ahead condition affairs of allow ¬ ances and the Deiby had not got under its charitable searchlight So the Derby winner was hardly penalized among a band of six song and dance turf tools The ring treats Mr Bradley as a joke even when Mr Bradley sells staples So its denizens sold the Derby winner for far too cheap a price It was two and a half to one in ring parlance or in that of everydayiem ten cent calico for five cents The rings price was false and costly to the sellers because Robert Waddell won in that j jaunty way that great hcreee win among every ¬ day horses horsesIt It was an afternoon of great Lores perform arce at the track The five furlong record was twice broken First Mr Tom McDowell brought an improved edition of Maid Marion up frcm hie farm on the Frankfort pike It was the well and historically named Alan a Dale by Halma Sudie McNairy a chestnut colt of noble presence and an aristocratic and old fashioned way of go ¬ ing Only sore shins was offered as an excuse against work and weight for the distance in one minute The ring took no liberty with Alan a Dale He was always oddson and won in that goodness of manner an elderly suggestion of good wine His time was 1OOJ displacing the track record of l00tof BIX sprightly and past twoyearolds Alan a Dale will cut a Emart figure in the racing of 1901 He may have run faster than the time of the race raceAs As if to show that she was cot of the retiring kind and had cpeed claims cf her own John Schorrs noble filly Endurance by Bight beat Alan a Dales time in the third race for two yearold fillies the Lakefide Stakes worth 2540 to the winner She was the favorite she deserved by performance to be and won in an impressively courageous way in one minute minuteThe The Lady shouldered her impost of 112 in grand fashion and had no trouble disposing of a good field in the fourth race a dash of one mile Eva Rice took her along for nearly three quarters but the soon shook off the Burdaau mare after entering the straightaway and was never in trouble afterward The time 139 was a very creditable performance Louisville was given a shabby ride and after getting clear sailing down the backstretch ran a striking race closing much ground groundPirates Pirates Queens light weight carried her in frcntofher field in the first race the entire route and she had no trouble winning handily over Excelsis and Fantasy FantasyCrest Crest ran away with the last race in a jiffy much to the surprise of many as the mare has not started in months She won from flag drop to wire with the fastclosing Enghurst second Gossip Of The Turf. GOSSIP OF THE TUB TUBThough Though the English stable lads have their grievances they are apparently much better off than boys following the same calling in France According to tho following from the Paris cor ¬ respondent of The Field the French boys are subjected to harsh if not cruel treatment With regard to the controversy which is going on as to the treatment of the boys employed in the racing stables of Chantilly while the British chaplain there only recently appointed takes it upon himself to say ex cathedra that there is nothing to complain of and that all is Oscar Browning and several others who have made it their business to get to the root of the matter tell us that the condition cf the lads is pitiable in the extreme that they are badly lodged and worse fed treated in many cases with great brutality and quite neglected so far as religious and moral instruction goes My own opportunities of seeing what really goes on in tho principal stables have not been very frequent but as far as my own knowledge and experience go I should say that the charge of neglect if not of positive cruelty is well founded There are exceptions of course and one may bo sure that trainers like the veteran T R Carter and several others of the old school will see that their head lads do not bully or maltreat the boys under their control but there are others who delegate all this to the head lads themselves who are in too many cases ignorant and brutal and under whom the stable boys lead a very hard life It is to be hoped that the proposal to submit the matter to the British Embaesy in Paris and to obtain tho appointment of a committee to investigate the charges will be carried through There will be a sale of thoroughbred yearlings at the Union Etock Yards at Chicago 111 July 8 and 9 1901 by Woodard Shanklin of Lex ¬ ington Ey This includes produce from the establishments of Mr O H Chenault of the Spendthrift Stud Mr T J Clay and Mr G H Clay of the Balgowan Stud Mr R L Baker Mr H C Muir Mr C Woodford of the Race land Stud Mr C F McMeekin of theOakwood Stud and Col L F Clay of the Runnymede Stud There will aleo a number of other breed ¬ ing establishments represented and additional entries are solicited Two exceedingly fine twoyearolds ran at Washington Park yesterday the great filly En ¬ durance by Bight and Mr T C McDowells colt Alan a Dale The latter a halfbrother to Batten end the flying Maid Marian made a most impressive debut running away from his field and winning by many lengths in fast time He is in tha Kenwood and Hyde Park Stakes and is a candidate of formidable pretensions Elmendorf Colts Sold.
