Page [1] Maud Gonne's Englewood. MAUD GONNES ENGLEWOOD By lone odds the largest crowd of the week visited the Washington Park track yesterday and those present were well repaid for their attendance by witnessing a high class card of six racee raceeThe The Englewocd Stakes a sweepstakes for threeyearold fillies resulted in a crushing finish between Maud Gonne and Sadie S the former lasting long enough to beat the fast closing Sullivan filly a head on the post with Trinity Bell third two lengths away The win ner first ran Lady Stratbmore into submission then took Trinity Bells measure at the last eighth post and had just enough left to reach the wire first Eullman never let up on Sadie S who could not keep up in the first six fnr longs For the last half mile he constantly whipped and legged her and by dint of an oner getic effort got her within two lengths of the winner at the last sixteenth From there to the wire she gradually cut down the leaders advantage and would have won in a stride or two Fancy Wood appeared unable to handle her impost with any degree of success and was easily outrun for the entire route Fink Coat put up one of bis high class efforts in the handicap race the fourth on the card and woe a splendid contest rather handily by a length from Mr Brown who beat Gonfalon three lengths for second place The event re solved itself from flag dip to almost near the wire into a duel between the first two horses Bnllman rated the 98 Derby winner along cleverly and when he urged him in the last six ¬ teenth the horse responded with a bound and came away somewhat handily Gonfalon made his run when straightening away for homo but when his jockey saw he could not close on the first two he eased him Louisville ran as if outclassed and was never a factor Pa Bradley withdrew Hobert Waddell from the sprint race thereby disappointing a num ber that had not seen the Derby winner perform since last Saturday It proved to be the most exciting contest of the day Tayon The Lady and Headwater crossing the wire lapped on each other in the order named The Cook horse was undoubtedly tke best coming from fifth position in the last eighth and closing with a determined rueb The Lady as usual put up one of her consistent perfoimances and is a grand filly Headwater hung slightly at the end Money Muss would not run to his best form under Ransoms weak handling and after showing prominently to the head of the stretch fell away to modest obscurity obscuritySan San Andres came with a sensational burst al the end in the last race and nipped Winter by a neck with John Drake a lapped on third The last named showed the most early speed of the field but was tiring palpably in the last fifty yards yardsSweet Sweet Billie was sold before the second race to E E Bradley Terms private privateBam Bam Hildretb has secured second call on Co burns services servicesWainamoinen Wainamoinen gave a glimpse of her Memphis and St Louis form by winning the second race in fast time from Eddie Buech who brought her to a drive and ran in the form he exhibited at Louisville Sweet Billie ran so badly in this race that it is charitable to infer she has not recovered from the effects of ber severe race for the Lakeside Stakes StakesThe The card for this afternoon is made up o purses but many good horses are to run anc good racing is assured AllanaDale is to mee Pentecost and John Huffmans good filly Helen Print in the first race Boiling Boer is to make hie Washington Park debut in the sec ¬ ond the flyers Vulcain Yellow Tail and George Arnold are to measure strides in the third am Andrisa Miss Bennett and Isia represent speed a and good class in the fifth The fourth and SI sixth are selling affairs with good fields of fast platers in each eachTomorrow Tomorrow the Oakwood Handicap will be contested by a big field of the best handicap horees at the track and with fair weather 9 20000 people may be expected to view its do A Horse's Queer Career.
