Meyer. CHARLES W MEYEK BE C 2 BY ESHEK ULTIMATUM CHART ES TT METER When the Gaston Hotel States was decided at Memphis April 3 there was an immediate sensation in boreedom Owners trainers non professionals and ecribes united in declaring the winner Charles W Meyer one of the great ¬ est twoyearolds ever seed in this country one probably destined to unheard of achievements in the racing line A few days later he was the central figure of another sensation when it was widely reported that he had been poisoned why or how no one could tell Later it developed that a careless employee had left a bucket filled with frosh lime in his stall Impelled by a lusty appetite the young giant had plunged his nose into the bucket with the result of hav ¬ ing his nostrils mouth and throat badly burned by the acridbiting stuff This affected him so that it was quite a time before he could be raced again and it is an open question as to whether he has fully recovered now frcm the shock then suffered sufferedIn In the Gaston Hotel Stakes all carrying 118 pounds he met Brannigan Jordan Abe Frank Bed Hook H L Coleman Lou Woods and Ealoma coupled with H L Coleman he was the pcet favorite at 9 to 5 Abe Frank being second choice at 11 to 5 Brannigan set the pace to midway of the homestretch where Charles W Meyer overhauled him and drawing away won by a good length with Brannigan second two lengths before Jordan Abo Frank was an indiff ¬ erent fourth and did not run up to his private work It was a case of not being entirely fit as his subsequent running demonstrated The half mile was tun in 50 eeconde which is fast time for the Memphis track trackThe The colt was not started again until May 25 in the Kindergarten Stakes at Bt Louis where with 121 pounds up he met Trio 115 Ealoma 118 3he Four Hncdred 110 and Lee Nutter 108 Over such an indifferent opposition he was bound to be a hot favorite and going to the poet at 2 to 5 he forged into tbe lead EOOU after the etart and stayicg there without the sem ¬ blance of a strorg effort won with all ease by two lengths with Trio second and Ealoma third He was kept in EtLcuis in the expecta ¬ tion of winning the Junior Championship Stakes decided May 8 but on this occasion he failed diemally The track was heavy and it may be that the Schorr colt cannot run well in mud although in this racehe led to the stretch The starters were Nyelh 113 McnteEimyar 115 Charles W Meyer 123 and Flora Pomona 118 Charles W Meyer was at 1 to 6 in the bet ¬ ting He was first away and vtas first all tbe way around into the stretch but only by a nar ¬ row matgin and when into the stretch Wyeth literally ran away from him and won off by him ¬ self by five lengths while Monte Himyar out ¬ stayed him and beat him for second money by a narrow margin This was a surprising down fall indeed for a supposed invincible and it was said that the colt was short because rain bad prevented his beicg worked sufficiently The time for the six furlongs was 1 20 20With With considerable of the gloss worn from his reputation Charles W Meyer was now brought to Chicago and started in the Graduate Stakes at Harlem June 18 Only four started Abe Frank 123 Ed Austin 118 Arian 105 carried 1061 land Charles W Meyer 123 and they fin ¬ ished in that order Aba Frank was first by a half lengtbfrom his stable comrade Ed Austin with Arian third two lengths away Charles W Meyer got away second but made no showing of value and was plainly short and was eased up when clearly beaten It was a fast run race the flve fnrlongs being covered in 1 00 There was no betting at Harlem that day which was a good thing for the followers of the Schorr stable He showed something of the form that made such an impression at Memphis when he started in the Quickstep Stakes at Washington Park July 6 Abe Frank was an easy winner but Charles W Meyer finished with a fino burst of speed and was second nosing Ed Austin out in the final stride and defeating such other good ones as Jack Battlin Memnon Sister Jeanie Wainamoinen and Autumn Leaves His sensa ¬ tional defeat by Pentecost in tho Maywood Stakes is too recent to require recapitulation Racing Over At Newport. RACING OVER AT NEWPORT NEWPORTAlthough Although entries had closed the day previous I there was no racing at Newport yesterday and it was announced that there will be no more at that track until some date not named in Oc ¬ tober Tho immediate cause for the cessation of racing was beyond doubt the failure to ob ¬ tain consent from the other organiza ¬ tions associated with Newport to the estab ¬ lishment of the iniquity called a foreign book but why the determination to close so suddenly without notice to the owners who have supported the track was arrived at is a mystery Racing at Newport is a losing busi ¬ ness on tho face of things and why it has been carried on so long under adverse circumstances is another puzzle The flattening out was so sudden that a number of owners of indifferent racers must find themselves stranded high and dry with St Louis offering the nearest by relief Use Of The Whip. USE OF THE WHIP Over at St Louis a few days ago Gil Curry while watching the efforts of some of the jock ¬ eys riding at that track was moved to deliver some remarks concerning tbe use and misuse of tho whip that are worth considering He said saidIt It is really a pity that some of these boys do not learn how to draw a whip before using it They all go for it in a terrible rush draw it as a beset soldier draws a sword as if their life depended on getting it out qnckly Then they throw themselves ovetin the left stirrup swing ¬ ing all the weight on that side and throwing the horse out of bis stride bring their hands high down Then come down smartly timingthe blow to tbe stride and putting sticg and snap into the crack with the wrist Do not try to put in too many licks Time them nicely Put them in with zip You never saw a good boxer a good baseball batter or a good hitter of any kind that drew back quickly just before hitting out Draw ¬ ing back quickly destroys balance time and distance Eeep the body still while whipping see that the faot are evenly disposed in the stirrups then use the arm and wrist There will be just as much force in the blow Then always let your horse know you are going to whip before you take your hands off the reinc If he is a swerver he will start then and you can hold him Most of the swerving under the whip is done in the first few licks Hold your left baud well down and tight Then fan him instead of belaboring him Do not turn half around in the saddle to whip Indeed the only part of tho body that should change position during a drive isthe right forearm In all other j CONTINUED OK SECOND PAQB over their heads and as far back as possible and come down with all their might This brings them back into the right stirrup with a bang and pulls the horse out of his stride again Just to find out how much this switching of wtights from one side to tho other hurts a horse run past a friend as fast at you can and let him just nip your coat with finger and thumb as yon go by He will about throw you down So yon will find out how much this swinging hurts a horse driven all out I have not yet spoken of letting the horses head go which is the most important part of it and the hardest to avoid doing It takes a great rider to hold his horse as well with one hand as with two But if the boys would only draw the whip and use it right they would help themselves a lot lotThe The way to draw a whip is to have it always ready Go to the bat in time and do not be in a rush getting it up If yon take it up too quick and too high your arm will throw yon off your balance Take it up slowly and do not raise the hand higher than the shoulder Eoep the elbow USE OF THE WHIP Continued from First Page respects it should remain just as it was when handriding handridingIt It may seem to the inexperienced that great big swings of the whip helped along by the weight of the body hurt more but I assure yon neat swift wrist raps well delivered will have aiore effectual propulsive power What would you think of a trottinghorse driver that swung around in his sulkey and threw the whip back onlil it touched the tracV and then came for ward with it for dear life Why hed ba railed off for pulling Yet that is just what many jockeys do every day Of course they aro boys and you cannot expect mens work from boys Miss Bennett Again. MISS BENNETT AGAIN AGAINMiss Miss Bennett was the bright particular star of yesterdays offerings at Washington Part the speedy filly repeating her victory of July 9th although the time was threefifths of a sec ¬ ond slower At the weights she appeared to hold her field safe in the fine fettle she is in nt present and justified this belief Anna Bain attempted to live with her for a spell but long before the stretch had been reached she drew away frcm her as if she was tied The Bush under punishment made a bold bid to close on her in the final eighth but she never faltered winning all out by a length and a half with the May colt five in front of Gonfalon The last named ran a dull race his speed probably hav ¬ ing been taken away from him in some degree by his long race of July 10th Anna Bain run into exhaustion by Miss Bennett quit badJy in the final run in inHeadwater Headwater took the days opener in rather a handy fashion He was easily tha best at the weights After Buffering Van Hoorebeke to run in the lead for tho first half Enight shot the Jones gelding past him as if he was tied and the race thereafter was never in doubt Beauty Book was easily tho best of tbe others and ran a pretty fair race all told It seemed as if Eva Bice had a chance at the head of the stretch ¬ out she faltered at the last eighth poet and was thoroughly tired by the time tbe lino bad been reached besides having been slightly cut Bri ¬ gade could not concede tho weight nor was J Martin strong enough to do him justice He was never in the hunt at any stage of the race raceJulia Julia Junkin took the fainthearted Mabel Winn into camp in the second race when the latter appeared all over an easy winner Mabel Winn started out with a big advantage and ap ¬ parently running well within herself had a lead of nearly two lengths a furlong out but the Brown filly gradually closed on her catching her in the last fifty yards and boating her out easily by two lengths with the Reppaes filly two lengths in front of Ernest Parham There was a long delay at the post caused by the enbstitu ting of J Martin for Davisson on Eentucky Muddle who ran into the outside rail in one of the breakaways and injured the letters leg legBrownie Brownie Anderson with a feather on her back beat out Bennetts Laureate in the fifth race in a drive after leading frcm tbe first quarter She won by a length with Laureate one in front of Alaska who ran a fine race from a bad send off and would probably have won with any kind of racing luck luckThe The last race of the day was taken by Her ¬ mann Caseins good colt Bed Tip who led from start to finish Janbert and Doreen closed on tbe celt when a furlong out but Enigbt never let up on him and under an energetic ride held hie advantage to the end winning by one length with Doreon a neck in the lead of Jaubert who was tiring at the end endFor For an off day the sport was very good al ¬ though the attendance was not up to the stand ¬ ard owing to the mediocre attractions attractionsFor For this afternoon a grand card is provided with the Young Handicap as the central attrac ¬ tion A magnificent field of fourteen of the best bor sea at the track are named to start and thfr only thing to regret is that Sam Hildrothe era ck Waring is not in the list of acceptances Three American Derby winners and a Futurity winner are down to start in what is sure to be a fiercely contested and thrilling race If the fourteen that have accepted weights go to the post the race will be worth 5825 to the winner a sum well worth coveting by any owner ownerThe The other races are well filled and with good horses all through The opening scramble for CONTINUED ON SECOND PAGE MIS3 BENNETT AGAIN Qonlinuad from Firs Page twoyearolds has Charles W Meyer Memnon Helen Print and Ro3ewar among those carded to go Vulcain Montanic Maud Gonne Ser ¬ rano and Money Muss aro among the sprinters In the second race and fonr cracks are in the flf tU race where Mr Brown Caviar The Lady and Jim Inez ara to meet at weights that prom ¬ ise a smashing good race All round the pros poet is for a day of rarely good racing Page [1] The American Turf Congress.
