Page [1] Advance Guard Beaten. ADVANCE GUARD BEATEN The card offered at Hawthorne yesterday was of a much higher order than that given the day previously and consequently a larger crowd was on hand to witness the sport sportThe The feature attraction of the day was a free handicap at a mile and seventy yards in which Louisville with 95 pounds up met Advance Guard carrying 125 and Vnlcain 114 The son of Great Tom was made the favorite but ran a somewhat dull race failing to show his usual stretch burst of speed speedLouisville Louisville as the barrier arose immediately went to the front and remaining well within herself held her advantage for the entire route winning handily by two lengths from Advance Guard who closed stoutly in the last hundred yards and in a desperate drive nipped Vnlcain on the post by a head for second money It was whispered about after the race that Advance Guard had had only a slight workout since the Wheeler Handicap HandicapThe The long distance race was won by the consist ¬ ent Alaska who cleverly ridden by Knight laid within easy call of hie field to the head of the stretch then came away quickly winning by a length and a half from Tammany Chief who finished strongly under punishment beating the tiring Frangible a length for second place Ben Chance finished well but Gormley was nn ablo to give him the vigorous ride that he re quires and the best he could do was to run fourth With a good strong boy in the saddle he would certainly have cut an important figure in the race Our Nellie ran well for a mile and then gave it up upBrief Brief with her light impost of 92 pounds and backed for a good thing ran away with the purse in the finale winning by five lengths from El Gbor who beat Sam McKeover a nose for second money The winner although off poorly picked up her field gradually and moved up into the lead from next to last position just before straightening away for home From here to the wire she simply cantered home The Bondman closed with a dash in the last eighth and would have gotten third money from 8am McKeevor in another stride Ado lante ran well for about half a mile mileEd Ed Austin appeared to be thrown into an easy spot in the second race a dash for youngsters at five and a half furlongs He was made an odds on favorite with Bnllman in the saddle and showed a clean pair of heels to the others for the entire route Off in front he was ac ¬ companied a short distance by The Giver but long before the stretch had been reached the latter had anough and Ed Austin simply can ¬ tered the rest of the journey winning by two and a half lengths from Jaubert who beat Bed Tip four for second place South Elkhorn ran fairly well for a half mile and then faded away The Giver showed a sharp turn of early speed but could not carry it far farDespite Despite the fact that a report was circulated that The Lady had bled in a recent workont ahe was made a red hot favorite in the third race but succumbed to Livadia who put up a high class race and won in impressive style The Griffin mare was luxuriant of speed hold ¬ ing a commanding lead throughout the six and a half furlongs The Lady after lying in fourth position to the head of the stretch closed up with determination but was not able to beat the winner who won quite handily by a length Savoy tired as usual when the pinch came finishing third a length and a half back of the Hildreth filly Favonius ran a splendid race making up much ground while coming down tha last quarter and finishing with quite a burst of speed He would have been a factor in the race had it been at seven furlongs Len nep failed to show much of a race and is prob ¬ ably waiting for mud to show at her best Sharp Bird as usual displayed his sharp turn of speed but could not carry it far farA A poor lot faced the barrier in the days opener the talent being all up in the air so far as picking the probable winner was concerned The victor turned up in Latch Key a rank out ¬ sider who came with a well timed rush in the 1 last sixteenth and won with ease passing over the line three lengths in front of Zacatoao who beat the fast tiring Mary Moore a length for second place Hop Scotch backed by a select few for a sure thing ran a short five furlongs and then retired finishing utterly last The Monadnock Weights. GOSSIP OF THE TURF The late Pierre Lorillard was a reticent man about his racing plans and projects He made a confidant of no one Not even his best friends knew what stock he had at Bancocas His em ¬ ployes were sworn to secrecy and no one admit ¬ ted within its gates unless armed with a written order from Mr Lorillard himself or accompa ¬ nied by that gentleman If he had a good crop of twoyearolds or a stake horse was fit to race for some big event only Mr Lorillard and his trainers were aware of it itA A fairly correct list of the horses in tr lining stallions broodmares colts and are settled The farm has been left to Mrs Allien but butbather bather the family or she will et that splendid property In the end it is very probable W K Tanderbilt will become its eventual owner ownerWhat What gives color to this statement is the fact that W K Vanderbilt and Pierre Lorillard were great friends socially and in business Th former spent a gooddeal of time at Ranco ¬ cas and six years ago purchased sixteen finely bred maree from Lorillard and shipped them to hie VanderbiltsFrench breeding stud studNine Nine of these mares were by the French stall ¬ ion Mortemer who in 1870 during the Franco PrnBelan war was Bent across the channel to England to save him from conscription by the Germans About 10000 was paid for the six ¬ teen Bancocas mares and some of their progeny are now racing on the French turf Discussing Advance Guards career a Cana ¬ dian writer says saysThis This coddling of race horses running them a race and then resting them for a couple or three weeks is simply poppycock and both English and a lot of American trainers have been playing the game for years I saw only a few days ago in an English exchange the pub ¬ lished opinion of the late Tom Jennings who was a master of the more robust school of training and he laughed to scorn the modern gingerbread as he called it The last time he was at Ascot he remarked I do not know what horse racing is coming to with some of these trainers If a horse wins a race instead of running him again next day it is as much as they will do to let you even have a look at him for a week or more This was not Old Toms system With Vernenil he won the Queens Vase Gold Cup and Alexan ¬ dra Plate all within four days There were few more successful trainers than his brother Harry Jennings Old Hat as he was called Not many men living have won so many or such valuable races as he did and most of them were over a distance of ground His system was even more robust than that of his brother Tom Go through his stables and you would sometimes see two or even three horses loose in a box without a rag on them and he would think nothing of sending a horse up a gallop and turning two or three others loose to gallop after him as they would horses being gregar ¬ ious This galloping in a semi wild state he said saved their legs Treatment such as this would make the hair stand on end of most of our trainers and we rather fancy it would be the same with some of their employers if they were unexpectedly to appear on the scene and see a horse they had given a good many thou ¬ sands for doing his work that way waySaid Said Peter Wimmer recently There will be no further effort made to train Einley Mack an ¬ other season The next that race goore will hear of him will be of some youngster in train ¬ ing sired by Kinlsy Mack But L shall always regret that I hurried the horse along for the spring handicaps this year It was that which settled his case adversely for I believe if I had gone on slowly with him as I am doing with the black mare Imp I should have some good races out of him at Saratoga or in the coming fall Kinley Mack was a great horse a greater horse than the public ever knew A meeting
