Page [1] Hawthorne Racing. HAWTHORNE RACING The hot Ban of yesterday dried up the Haw ¬ thorne track considerably making the going slow and rather cnppy Although the horses were throwing dnst from their heels the pecu ¬ liar condition of the soil favored mud runners and in all inetancos horees that run best in soft going scored The best crowd of the week was out and enjoyed a great days sport sportThe The feature event of the day was a free handi ¬ cap for threeyearolds and upward at one mile 700 added The five horses that started all had many supporters but the race was won by the favorite Scotch Plaid which was liberally backed at 2 to 1 1Off Off to a splendid start Ben Battle darted to the front leading at the quarter just swinging by a length from Scotch Plaid which was a neck before W J Deboe Captain Qaines at this early stage of the race was already beaten off and appeared to be unable to extend him self in the dead going Down the backstretch Ban Battle continued in easy command still holding an advantage of one length when pass ¬ ing beyond the half while Trinity Bell had moved up and joined the other two There was little change in these positions until well straightened for home where Ran oh began urg ¬ ing the Burns Waterhonse gelding and swing ¬ ing him to the center of the track he was soon on even terms with Ben Battle The latter was running along close to the inside rail where the going was heaviest and was having a merry tilt with Trinity Bell which had moved up to his flank at the last eighth post After passing beyond the sixteenth post it was seen that Scotch Plaid had the best of his field finally winning handily by a length while Ben Battle which had shaken off Trinity Bells bold bid in the last eighth beat her out two and a half lengths for second place W J Deboe ran well for about a fliort six furlongs and then fell away Ho ran far bilow expectations Captain p Games was never in the hunt and clearly demonstrated that he wants a fast track to run to his beet form formThe The second race of tha day while easily taken by Malay in the last sixteenth was full of sharp action up to that point where If You Dare and Maggie Davis were having a merry tilt for supremacy Malay was clearly outrun in the earlyjstages of the race but closed fast when once straightened for home He picked up the two leaders just about a furlong out and pass ¬ ing them easily won by four lengths Maggie Davis who was outrun by If You Dare up to the final eixteentb finally got to the Bolich Sweet gelding and under punishment beat him out a length for second place The latter was very tired at the end and was beginning to swerve Manypinned their faith to Lennep in this affair but the track was not holding nough for the Foster mare to show at her best and she hadito be content with finishing outside of the money She showed a lot oi early speed but fell away after running a half mile Thetothers were never contenders contendersThe The youngster affair at seven furlongs was productive of the most exciting finish of the day llcCheeneylwinning In a desperate drive from Commissicner Forster by a neck on the post It took all the skill Bullman possessed to land hismount first over the line and he put up one of the most energetic rides seen here ¬ abouts this year Lady Helene and the Schorr babyf alternated in the lead until just before bending for the run in where McChesney which had always been close up assumed a light command He appeared to have the race at his mercy after passing beyond the last eighth but Woods called on his Monnt for a last effort and he responded I gamely gradually closing on the leader Bull man began arming and legging McChesney in the closing strides and just managed to get his neck over the line first South Trimble was three lengths away He was a sharp contender up to the last hundred yards where he faltered and Winkfield seeing he had no chance to be one two eased him up Miracle II ran well for five furlongs and then retired Lady Helene displayed speed for about a half mile milePrince Prince Blazes repeated his victory of the day before although in this instance he was brought to a hard drive to win beating Prairie Dog a neck on the post in a hair raising finish After Refugee had led for a quarter and tired Prairie Dog shot to the front and stayed there up to the last eighth where he was joined by the Licalzi gelding The two ran head and head for some distance until Mitchells superior jockeyship over Gormley began to assert itself and he fairly lifted his mount over the line first Obsidian backed for a good thing ran a poor third eight lengths away HI Ghor was hopelessly cut off at the first turn and then made up ground so rapidly that by the time the half mile post had been reached he had spent the last ounce and having nothing left to finish with fell completely out of the contest finish ¬ ing last lastThe The last race of the day went to an outsider named Slips which although she broke last picked up her field in quick time and assuming a big lead remained in front to the end In the last sixteenth she began tiring and was all out to beat Brownie Anderson a length with the same distanca intervening between the Barrett filly and Andes The latter ran a dull race and clearly showed he did not fancy the going St Wood heavily backed by his stable ran fairly well for a half mile and then faded away to a grease spot Hawthorne Handicap Weights HAWTHORNE HANDICAP WEIGHTS The Hawthorne Stakes a handicap at six fur ¬ longs for two yearolds 1500 added will be the central feature at GOSSIP OF THE TURF TURFA A wellattended race meeting was held at Hoolulu Park island of Hilo H I on July 4 5 and 6 this year The Hawaiian Gazette says of the meeting The sport was of an interesting nature and the majority of the events were well contested The crowds on Friday and Saturday were naturally somewhat smaller thau was the case on Thursday but the racing was of better class and productive of several exciting finishes OONTIOTBD OK SECOND PAQK GOSSIP OF THE TURF Continued from First Pago On each day the band enlivened the proceedings Several new track records were created among them being the half mile 491 seconds by Mollie Connors and the mile 1 471 by Dixie Land Old Amarino took three purses Billy McCloskey two Violin two Frank S three and Dixie Land two With few exceptions the horses ran true to form the biggest surprise being the defeat of Billy McCloskey by Dixie Land on the last day of the meeting The Alexander Button mare Violin beat Wayboy in two races the fastest time of any of the heats being 226 226Look Look at the poor Russians 1 A dispatch tells as that Cass Sloan was nearly mobbed at Mos ¬ cow because he lost with a horse that had no ahance but on whichall the mujiks itzes and witovitches bet just because they had been used to seeing Cass ride winners and got it into their unfortunate nuts that he could not rid a loser This is what the dispatch says Tko chances are that the Russians are wiser goVaand follow the dope closer than any one thinks thinksIt It is a good bet that Cass was riding one that hadno chance to lose according to Hetcher oskls Manual but which did lose after the wise gOB had taken 1 to 2 and got the nuts Amer ¬ icans are not savages or fools but they have often been tempted to lynch Case not for losing witk an outsider that had no chance but for losing with a horse forty pounds the best In going after the celebrated Tods older brother the Russian sports displayed intelligence and discommon t fully equal to that of the East St Loais regulars of tha early nineties ninetiesBy By tha way Caseins Sloan is being managed by BO IMS a character than Fred Foster who gained fame with Doctor Rice in the Brooklyn of 1894 and who later operated a merrygoround at Sportsmans Park Foster writes a friend in St Louis that he and Cass have been doing Austria doing it good probably From the tenor of Freds missive things are pretty soft over there He says that he expects to be of fared the job of Emperor but adds that ho can scarce spare the time from tha from the ring to attend to the duties of the office Here is an opening for Johnny Ryan who could always loee Foster in ways that are vain And even if the Russians are after Cass and Fred with ropes feathers and tar it is a good bet that both the free Americans will get all that is com ¬ ing to them in the way of rubles which are Russian dollars Cass and Fred have landed the goods in tougher lands than that of the Czar St Louis Republic Brighton Beach Form Chart.
