Page [1] Arian Defeats Ed Austin. ABJAN DEIEATS ZD AUSTIN The second week of Hawthornes summer meeting started out auspiciously there being a splendid Jdordey crowd preient The track was heavy and holding and mudlarks had the call in each race The Hawthoine Stakes the feature event of the day furnished a bigsur price the winner tuning up jn a rank outsider Arian which was beaten off in the same kind of going in the Competition Stakes last week It was a peculiarly inn race the winner lying back of his field until the final quarter where he moved up and got to the leader opposite the paddcck gate Alcrg in beie ibe six were bunched and all tiring badly Arian finally got his neck in front and held it theie to the end Ed Austin was eerord a heed in frcnt of Jan bert which was a lergth in the If ad cf Doreen The last three were ready to drop frcm exhaus ¬ tion by the time the line had been reached and were hardly moving better than a canter in the clcdrg strides Jack Battlin cbovied a great turn cf eaily tpeedlut tired and quit badly when the pinch came Bosewar also dropped all interest in the contest when the crucial test camef camefPat Pat Dunne double sbot tha game when Bcunie Lissak won the last race The filly had on her running clothes and never left her many snppoiters in dcubt as to tha result Sister Mamie lid on sufferance at the firet quarter by a lergth hut hiJe goirg dcwn the backstretch Ranch gave the Dunne filly her bead and she moved easily into ihelead Just before turning for hcme Beery of Trastamare moved up to her saddle girths but once Btiaighterjtd away in theEtietcb ebe shook him off quickly and com ¬ ing tn eticrpJy v cn by a length with Henry of Trasttmaio two arid a Lalf in front of Chorus Bey There was a generous backing of the latter but be failed to run up to expectations He ran about an even clip thicrgbcut The others never bad a chance chanceThe The eprint race was taken by that good Sir Dixon horse George Arnold which hooked up with Maggie DE vis at the last eighth poet ane after a merry tilt beat her to the line by a neck Maggie Davis showed the most early speed bnl was tiling in the last sixteenth Andrisa was third eight lengths away and put up a poor perfoimance The other two cculd not extend themselves in the going goingThe The opening race of the day went to Commis ¬ sioner Forster which has shown some good races hereabouts recently He had to be pounds the best to win as he was fully ten lengths back cf Emathicn as tha latter turned into the stretch in the lead Dcwn the runin Woods began to ride him with strength and the colt simply cinsnmed space picking up those in front with eaee and winning going away by two lergtbs frcmApril which beat Miracle II a half length for second place The latter made up much ground in tb tbe e last quarter bu was well spent at the end and was beginning to Bweive Imatbicn shewed plenty of early speed but was tiring fast in the last sixteenth Frangible had simply a cakewalk of it in the long distance race assuming the lead at flagdip and easily remaining in front all the way He won pulled up almost to a walk by two and a half lergtbs frcm Alaska which was five in front of G W W The latter was backed for a good thing but failed to make good He ran well for seven fmlcngs and then died away The others were never contenders Alaska ran agccd racei considering the weights and while he bad no chance to beat the winner was easily the best of the others othersThi Thi finish in the tbiid race was a peculiar one oneudtxQBcked udtxQBcked ecmenbat of comedy It appeared all mar IB if Bagnranca would win easily in the last eighth but suddenly she was seen to sprawl and Sounder and show signs of distress Brownie Anderson was about four lengths back of the Bennett filly along in here but when Gormley called on her she too began to sprawl and to make matters worse he lost control of her and apparently gave up persevering with her As luck would have it he got her together again and seeing Seguranca falter rallied her She responded well and coming on caught and passed Segnranca in the closing strides win ¬ ning by a length and a half Dalkeith which finished well was thiid five lengths back of 8s gnranca St Bluff showed spied for a short six furlongs and will do to watch Blipp after being well up to the bead of the stretch quit badly finishing absolutely lest Some Harlem Stakes. BROOKLYN JOCKEY CLUB STAKES STAKESIn In the advertising department of this issue Secretary Hugh D Mclntyre of the Brooklyn Jockey Club presents the conditions of a num ¬ ber of rich stakes to close August 15 They are the moat important events offered annually by the Brooklyn Jockey Club and are to be run in 1902 and 1903 by horses that are now yearlings Owners in the west should not be niggardly in patronizing these very valuable stakes for the mere fact that a youngster is well engaged in the leading races of any year adds immensely to his value before he has ever been tried out and in the event of his proving to be a good one makes him worth a fortune in these days of high prices for winning performers of high promise Consideration of their varying con ¬ ditions is earnestly commended to all owners Notes Of The Turf. MONTANA RACING There has been much said and written of the Montana Jockey Glnb and the race meet being conducted by it Some of the comment has been favorable and more of it adverse and it is not amiss to say a little more and give credit where credit is duo The officials of the clnb have labored hard and assiduously and they have worked under many disadvantages but notwithstanding it all it can be said that the meet is a success everything considered consideredThere There was considerable dissatisfaction ex ¬ pressed by horse owners at the shaving of purses and there was more dissatisfaction among the talent at the slimness of the odds offered by the books Then too there were frequent kicks and grumblings abont alleged questionable riding and form reversals that look palpable enough to have been brought about for an indi ¬ vidual advantage That is all a thing of the past now and the jockey clnb today enters on the third week of its meet with the knowledge tbat it has done its best to make sport good has accomplished it and above all has satisfied its patrons that everything will be on the level and firstclass if it is possible to make it so soThe The horse owners are no longer dissatisfied and the talent feels that it is getting a run for the money invested The bookmakers have loosened up and no one can with reason kick against the odds offered The attention of the Jockey Glnb officials was called to the evident pennriousness cf the books and the result is that the odds arenow as liberal as could be wished for forAs As far as in and out running is concerned there is little to say except that the judges have shown that they will not tolerate it On more than one occasion jockeys have been called into the stand and warned and the result ia tbat no jockey has repeated the offense against which he was admonished All that is neces ¬ sary is for the judges to make it plain that non ¬ sense will not be tolerated and tbat crooked work will result in summary handling of the offenders and all will be well The judges have made it plain that they will stand for no funny business and the result is that clean sport will be the order of the day Bntte InterMountain Gossip Of The Turf.
