Page [1] Silurian's Olympia Stakes. SILURIANS OtyMPIA STAKES The second week of Hawthornes midsummer meeting began most auspiciously yesterday fair weather an improving track and a large attendance all chiming in to make the days sport one long to be remembered Close finishes were tho rule of tho day and excitement ran high throughout the afternoon Should no rain fall between now and Wednesday the track by that time will be in tip top shape Yesterday it was slow and lifeless and favored mudlarks just a trifle trifleThe The Dig race of the day was tha Olympia Stakes a sweepstakes for threeyearolds and upward one and onesixteanth miles with 1000 added Malay was supposed to be the good thing in this race and was made a decided favorite but the beat he could do was to run a poor third The winner turned up in Pat Dunnes threeyearold gelding Silurian which carried but 83 pounds His only antagonist in the last eighth was Haviland which carried but 91 pounds The latter started out as if he was going tolmake a runaway affair out of tha race leading by from two to four lengths up to tho lastjqnarter where he began te tire About the eighth post Silurian picked him up and after a sharp brush in the last sixteenth won by a half length Malay finished third seven lengthstbohind Haviland He could not get up at any part of the journey and ran altogether a poor race which was probably due to the dead condition of the track as he appeared un able to extend himself at his bast in it Cam ¬ brian ran well for seven fnrlongs and then fell gradually away He has probably not recov ¬ ered from the effects of his trip on the cars from Saratoga besides he did not appear to like the lifeless going goingGeorge George Arnold despite his impost of 116 pounds carried it to victory In the fifth race a dash of one mile bnt he had to be driven out in the closing strides to stall off Argregors deter ¬ mined bid George Arnold always well up drew away from Argregor in the last sixteenth but Bunch rallied the latter which responded gamely sending Winkfield to the whip to win by a neck Headwater which had shown the way up to the last eighth tired rapidly at this point being beaten two lengths by Argregor for second iplace Ed Corrigan flashed his colors here for the first time this year when Artena went to the post in this race The horse ran well for a half mile bnt was beaten off at the end endEvening Evening Star was first past the wire in the third race a dash for twoyearolds at five fur ¬ longs She was much the best and showed the most speed fpr the entire route She won by two lengths from South Trimble which beat Bosewar one for second place South Trimble finished with a rush coming from way back and fairly running past horses at the end He got off well but fell out of it in the early stages of the race Bosewar tired in the closing strides as also did Emathion I Samelaon showed speed for a half mile mileHarry Harry New although it was tke first time he had ever faced the barrier won the first race in a spirited tilt with Lucy Locket by a head with Hat Mitchell third two lengths away Ha laid along sixth to the head of the stretch and then finished strongly but had to be urged out to the full extent to win Jane Oaker faltered badly In the closing strides Lawrence M ran well for a half mile mileAnother Another tight finish came up in tha second race when Banish outgamed Brief in the last sixteenth and won by a neck OB the post in a terrific drive Brownie Anderson wai third eight lengths away Banish was outrun slightly for tha flret half but closed fait in the last qaarter Brief tired in the last hundred yards Little Duchess II had enough after six furlongs had been run runPat Pat Dunne double shot the game when Max Bendix passed successfully under the wire in the last race a dash of six and a half furlongs Maggie Davis led by a slight margin up to a furlong out where Hax Bendix assumed an easy command winning going away by one length while Henry of Trastamare beat Andes two and a half for tha second money Henry of Trastamare outrun for the first five fnrlongs finished fast on the extreme outside in the last quarter Andes grew weary in the last six ¬ teenth and tho same may be said of Bival Dare Maggie Davis was right there for six fnrlongs A Turf Swindler Caught.
