NO. 217. CHICAGO, TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 1901. PRICE 5 CENTS St. Marcos Again ST. M ABC OS AGAIN. The track has been in such good condition at Harlem in tht last week that the rain that fell yesterday was only able to render it a shade slow and those owners that scratched their horses thinking that itwonld be muddy were most beautifully deceived. The track was not soft enough to prevent horses that run best over a pasteboard from winning, although several surprises bobbed up during the afternoon's sport. The most prominent race of the day waB the sixth, a dash of one and one-eighth miles for three-year-olds and upward. The finish was by far the most exciting of the day, Strangest coming strongly in the last eighth and beating out Searcher by three-quarters of a length, while the latter beat Charley O'Brien a neck for second place. Senator Beveridge led by a length from Charley O'Brien up to the last quarter with the rest well up, but once straightened for home the first named retired quickly and Searcher assumed what seemed like a winning lead. About the last sixteenth, however, there was a general closing up ontBide of 8enator Beveridge-. Strangest proved much the best in the closing strides, coming with a rush on the inside rail and gradually going away as the wire was passed. Leo Newell was lapped on Charley O'Brien at the finish and about ran his race. Senator Beveridge ran far below expectations. St. Marcos when he won the fourth race a dash of one and one sixteenth miles placed the fourth consecutive victory to his credit since racing hereabouts. He has proved himself to be a colt of good claBS and has won all his races in an easy fashion. He was pitted against so good a horse as Federal yesterday and made him look cheap. The former held a fair lead up to the head of the stretch where Cobura, who had always been lying second to the leader on St. Marcos, called upon bim and he came away with a dash winning without much effort by a length, while Federal beat Kunja two for second place. The last namid ran the best race Bhe has shown hereabout this year. Brutal was the victim of a pot r ride beirg cut off several times in the early part of the contest. Ransom is unable to make the gelding run to his true form. The steeplechase resulted in a pretty fair ar-aument between QueenEhip and Lord Chesterfield, which ran in fairly close company for the entire distance. They took the last jump on close terms, but Queenehip bad the most left in the etietch inn, finally winning easily by two lengths. She interfered with Lord Chesterfield a little after taking the sixth jump, but it made no difference in the result. Duty went down heavily over the seventh jump. Chancery bolted the tbiid risk and no amount of inducement could get him to jump thereafter. Ssa Bover, which finished a hppelessly beaten off thiid, pulled up so lame his jockey had to dismount and lecd him back to the judge's stand. Hat Mitchell finally diecovered a Bpot where he could Ebow his heels to a field of youngsters and he fairly ran away from them. He took the day's opener, a dash of four and a half furlongs in a big canter, leading from start to finish and winning by five lengths. Major Bird was second the same distance in front of Jane Oaker. It was a poor field at best. Money Mubb seemed to be much the boat in the second race, a dash of six furlongs, and such he proved to be. Joe Martin attempted to keep company with him for the first half, but he had run the latter into submission long before the head of the stretch had been reached, and the rost was easy sailing. He won by three lengths from The Lady, she beating Joe Martin four for second place. The Lady ran in improved form and is about ready to win. Banco ran nowhere near to the form of the excellent performance put up at the same track last week. The others were never contenders. A nose and a neck on the post was the finish in the fifth race, Amiraute just lasting long enough to beat the fast closing South Trimble, with Bag Tag third. South Trimble would have won in another stride. He was badly outrun in the early part of the race but finished with great speed. Bag Tag faltered in the closing strides. Hoodwink had enoujth when a sixteenth out. The laBt race of the day went to Baird, he taking the lead after the first half had been run and was never afterward headed, winning easily by one and a naif lengths. Mon-doro, backed heavily by the talent, finished five lengths before Prairie Dog. Mondoro failed to show the remarkable turn of speed displayed in his last effort, and altogether ran a disappointing race. Evelyn Byrd and Little Duchess II. ran well for about a half mile. Worth Racing Program WORTH BACING PROGRAM. Bobert A. Hiller, the new secretary of the Worth Jockey Club, has assumed his duties of office and outlined the policy of the club for the fall meeting of October 10 to 26 inclusive. Forty-two thousand dollars or more will be distributed among the winning owners during the fifteen days' racing. The chief feature of the opening day will be the Autumn Handicap, with $1,000 added. Three other races, with $1,000 added by the club, will bs run during the meeting, while on Tuesdays purees of $700 and on Thursdays purses of $800 will be the main features of the card. Purses of $400, $500 and $6C0 will supplement these. The day after the track closed after its spring meeting a force of men was put to work by the Worth Jockey club. New and commodious barns have been built and no expense has been spared to make the Worth plant one of the most practical and complete conrees in the western country. Already Secretary Hiller has received applications from many of the best Btables now racing here for stabling room, and a few of the eastern stables are expected to stop over at Worth before going west or south. New Orleans will have a larger gathering of good horses thai has ever been known there before. It has been intimated that many of the best race horses now racing at Chicago will winter at Memphis and be raced in the spring at New Orleans prior to the opening of the spring meeting of the New Men. phis Jockey Club. All this tends to help tho Worth Jockey Club's fall meeting, as it will keep the horses of good class here that might otherwise ship to San Francisco. New Orleans Stakes NEW ORLEANS STAKES. The season of winter racing at New Orleans will be inaugurated Thursday, November 28, and will cover at least one hundred days. Leonora Loring's success over Blue Girl in the Great Filly Stakes Saturday and the manner in which Shaw rode the latter are thus described in the New York Sun of Sunday : "Shaw's ride on the crack filly, Blue Girl, was pronounced by hundreds of experts to bo the acme of incompetency. While Blue Girl was beaten only by a head by L. M. Myers' Leonora Loring for the bulk of the prize money, it waB the consensus of opinion that Blue Girl, with any kind of good handling, would have been able to win easily. In explaining his action in applying to the BtewardB for an investigation, Mr. Whitney said to The Sun reporter : " 'I have asked the steward to investigate Shaw's ride on my filly, Blue Girl, because I think the boy's performance waB not what it should have been. In fact, it was about as poor a performance as I have ever seen. Shaw received no instructions to hold a position in the rac8, but was merely told to use his best judgment. If he did use his best judgment, it was anything but good, to say the least. From what I saw of the race, Shaw, after getting under way well, took Blue Girl in behind the bunch and stayed there until the beginning of the stretch was reached. Then he had a clear track ahead of him, but failed to put up a vigorous finish. In fact, I thought his finish was very weak. In my estimation Blue Girl should have won with ease and that's why I want to have the race investigated. Shaw had the mount on Blue Girl because he was engaged by Mr. Madden two weeks ago for this event, and before 1 had purchased Mr. -Mad-den's interest in the filly. That was the reason Turner did not ride instead of Shaw. Turner would have had the mount on my other filly, Bosa of May, instead, of Bullman, but he could not make the weight.' "Mr. Madden also expressed the opinion that Shaw's ride was either a. piece of gross carelessness or bad judgment. Down in the betting ring there were several ugly rumors, one of which was that in certain poolrooms Blue Girl, or rather the Whitney stable, was "laid against" extensively. Shaw is one of the best jockeys in this country just now. He is under contract to ride for George E. Smith, who is popularly known aa "Pittsburg Phil," but he has been riding for other owners, including the Fleischmanns, Frank FarreU, Madden and others, with, marked success. During the recent meeting at Saratoga Shaw and "Pittsburg Phil" were mixed up in an alleged scandal concerning the running of 3t. Finnan and Latson in a certain race, but after the stewards had examined the layers' shoots no action was taken because of a lack of proof that any wrong had been perpetrated. "The Great Filly StakeB, distance three-quarters of a mile down the new Futurity course, was worth $28,705, of which $24,905 went to the winner. As Yankee's share of the Futurity was $36,910, it can be seen readily what Mr. Whitney has lost within a week. But the winning of money prizes is a secondary consideration with Mr. Whitney. He wants to win because of the sport to be enjoyed, and the vast army of racegoers believe that he should win and that he is entitled to the squarest treatment. In yesterday's big race Mr. Whit.ey had Blue Girl, Gunfire and Bose of May, which were combined favorites, They opened at 4 to 5, but the public money came pouring into the ring so rapidly that the post price was 3 to 5 and out. Lux Casta, which ran second to Yankee in the Futurity, waB second choice at 5 to 1, while Leonora Loring was third in favor at 7 to 1. The others wore at all sorts of prices, the field consisting of twelve starters. Blue Girl carried top weight, 124 pounds. When they paraded past the stand 20,000 spectators loosed on and nearly all of -them expected to Bee the Whitney colors, 'light blue and brown cap,' finish in the van. "Once at the post and there was little or no delay. Starter Fitzgerald dropped his flag when the field waB in motion and in perfect alignment. Blue Girl got away as well as any. After going a furlong or so Blue Girl suddenly seemed to be shut off. This was a strange proceeding, inasmuch as the' Sir Dixon filly had plain sailing in front of her. Behind a bunch, however, Shaw kept Mr. Whitney's champion, and to those who saw the jockey when he got to the bend in the track it seemed as if he was Bitting perfectly still. Blue Girl was well in the ruck then and the onlookers were dazed. I Leonora Loring, who, by the way, had an unbeaten record up to last Thursday, when Clarence H. Mackay's Heno took her measure in the Dash StakeB, was leading the procession all the way down to the bend and she was traveling bo swiftly, yet so easily, that Odom did not exert himself at all, except to keep the filly etraisht and true. Josepha and Lux Casta, who had tried to keep pace with Leonora Loring for the first quarter of a mile, feU back but of.it and their places were taken by Hataeoo, 20 to 1, and Sun Shower 60 to 1. Leonora Loring had a length the best of those two youngsters at the last furlong poet. "There it was that Blue Girl, getting into a position where she was unobstructed, began to movo after the vanguard in lively fashion, Shaw, however, did not seem to be riding with his usual skill, and the crowd began to yell in dismay. Blue Girl, however, was so fleet of foot that she killed off Hatasoo in a few jumps and then got even with Sun Shower. Leonora Loring, holding the rail, still had a lead of a length, and Odom, intently watching Beau-champ on Sun Shower, was not urging hia mount at all, when suddenly he caught sight of Blue Girl within a half a length of him. Shaw was now riding with his hands, but with no whip as usual, and Blue Girl waB gaining with every leap. Odom cut Leonora Loring loose and the finish between the two was a hair-raiser. Many thought that Blue Girl had won, but the judges decided that Leonora Loring was the winner by a short head, or a nose. Notes of the Turf NOTES OF THE TURF. J. B. McDonald haB returned from Francs, after having safely landed Mr.W. K.Vanderbilt's stallion Halma and mares at the breeding farm at Villa Bonne, France. The trip was remark, able, in two weeks to a day from leaving Lexington, Ky., the horses were in their new home. Mr. McDonald has engaged "Eddie" Hughes to train the horses now in France to be raced there next year. Hughes trained " Jere" Dunn's f am-ons mare Sunny Slope, also the good horse Jack Point. The good brown mare Hypatia foaled in 1879, by Waverly, out of Sister to Buric, by Sovereign, and she out of Levity, by TruBtse, is dead at the Balgowau Stud. Hypatia was the dam of Hypocrite (the dam of Admiration), Gen. Miles, Bose Standish, etc. May Kennedy, dam of O'Connell, Ed Austin and many other winners, is thought to be safely with foal to Sorcerer. The yearling filly by St. Florian, out of May Kennedy, is growing into an excellent individual. Bab, Ordnung, Lady Meddlesome and other horses belonging to John F. Bchorr, which he left in California last spring, are being given slow work at Oakland and will be ready for early racing. The bay horse Compensation, 5, by Tournament Citronella, the property of B. Glen--wood, snited by the going and the weights, ran a capital race and stuck to his work gamely in the hard drive from the quarter home.
