NO. 224. CHICAGO, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER IS, 1901. PRICE 5 CENTS Vulcain's Good Race VULCAIN'S GOOD BACE. Windy and chilly aa it was yesterday there .was a big crowd at Hawthorne and the enterprise of thoBe who braved the discomforts of the nnseaBonable weather was rewarded with some excellent racing in the conrse of which several long shots bowled over strongly supported f avoritee. The track waB not at its best, bnt was safe and good and will be fast by Friday if no more rain falls. The principal race of the day was the fourth, a free handicap for all ages. Jiminez waB made an even money choice, but ran an extremely bad race, being hopeleBaly beaten off at the finish. The winner turned up in Bam Hildreth'e inconsistent Yulcain, which won quite handily at the end. After Goal Bunner, which had led by a good margin up to the last eighth, had shot his bolt, Coburn brought up Yulcain on the inside rail with a rush, and after a spirited tilt with Odnor and Argregor in the last sixteenth, won by a length going away. Odnor outgamed Argregor in the closing stridor, getting second place by the shortest of heads. Jiminez could Lever get up at uuy ptit o the race. His race on September 12 in the mud muBt have taken his speed away. "Uncle" Sam Bryant has no Proctor Knotta in his stable nowadays and the purses that fall his way are few and far between. But Dame Fortune turned a Bmiling face on him yesterday when hie filly Mollis T. cantered away with the opening race of the day, a dash of five and a half fnrloDga for two-year-old fillies guiltless of having won a race. She was in a running mood, daBhed into the lead at once and, more to the purpofie, stayed there to the end, winning off by her Bel f by four open lengths. The favorite, Whiffit, managed to land second in a driving finish with filcsBed Damozel and Blnemint, short heada separating the trio. Miss Madison displayed a dash of early epeed, but it was not lasting. With Andes and Braw Lad Ecratched, If You Dare and Delia Ostrand were made favorites for the second race, a six furlongs sprint, with but little margin between the pair in the betting. If You Dare assumed command quickly, Delia Ostrand his closest pursuer and Canova third, and in this order the race was run to the finish, where If Yen Dare was flret, five lengths in front of Delia Ostrand, she defeating Canova two EDd a half lengths for second money. Light Ball put up a disappointing peiformance, and the race does not truly represent his form. Old Prince Blazes, with, a feather on his back, overthrew a hot favorite in the third race, a daehef a mile and seventy yaids under selling conditions, for which Bynia was confidently backed. Little Qormley moved him into second place as the horses were rounding into the stretch, and challenging Bynia at the eighth - wore her down in a long drive and won by three parts of a length drawing away. Bynia ran a good race and stood the drive well, but the difference in weight told against her at the end. King Dellis was a good third, close up. Ga-waine ran well to the stretch, but tired in the last furlong and hardly ran to his best form. Sam Hildreth added the purse of the fifth race to his bank account because his filly Bodie S. was lucky and ran the six furlongs route like a sure enough stayer. She was an outsider in the betting, Santa Teresa going to the post a substantially backed favorite. Dodio S. was alwajs in the front division and responding gamely to punishment in the final furlong drew out and won from Pyrrho by a length, the latter defeating Banta Teresa as far for second place. Pyrrho got off poorly, made up a lot of ground and altogether ran a creditable race. Aladdin was hemmed in for moBt of the journey but came on fast when he secured, all too late, a clear course in the stretch. The favorite, Barrack, well handled by Wink field, captured "the last race of the day after a sharp drive down the stretch with MacOyle. The latter displayed something approximating the form that enabled him to win over the San Francisco tracks and hung on tenaciously, defeating Anthracite by five lengths for second place honors and on this showing should win before long. Merito ran well for six furlongs and then joined the rear division. Brooklyn Form Chart BROOKLYN FORM CHART. GRAVESEND, L. I., September 17. First day. Brooklyn Jockey Club. Fall Meeting. She lost ten lengths, which she made up only to meet with much interference by Dr. Eichberg. which was disqualified for it. Jim Megibben's was a sudden awakening. King Hanover got a very bad start and improved his position throughout. Port Royal was bearing out all around both turns. Goldsmith,- today's winner of the Junior Champion Stakes, was hurt on his journey from Sbeepshead Bay and the advisability of scratching him was seriously considered, but not giving evidence of any lameness in his preliminary he waB sent to the post, where his stable companion, Blue Girl, administered a parting kick for gocd luck, cutting a deep gash on the already injured leg. The first money in the great filly stakes, recently won by Leonora Loring, will after all probably revert to Blue Girl owing to the failure of Major Thomas to register Dr. T. H.
