VII. y O. 246. CHICAGO, SUNDAY, OCTOBER 13, 1901. PRICE ...... 5 CENTS .H., Muddy at Worth MUDDY AT WCETH. Tbe ipiu tbet ctme down in a fine drizzle all afternoon yesterday at Chicago Ridge rendered the Wcrtb track o mass cf slush, and mudlarks held supreme sway in all the six raceB. As is usual on such dajB the victors all scored by big margins end consequently the sport was attended by little excitement. The principal attraction on the program was the Illinois Handicap for three-year-olds and upward at one and one-eighth miles, with $1,G00 added. To the surprise of many the winner proved to be Hollitg Boer, which has been performing poorly of late. The Lady, his stable companion, closely pursued by Charley O'Brien, Bhoned the way for the first seven furlongs, where Boiling Boer moved up fast and assumed the lead. Be was bo rank while coming, down the last eighth that Coburn could hardly pull him up, winning by three lengths from The Lady, she beating Strangest two for Becond place. The Lady was pretty well out by tho time the last eighth post had been reached. Btrangeet was so tired a furlong out that he swerved into the inside rail. Charley O'Brien Tan well for a mile and then fell away rapidly. He hts possibly bed tro much of it of late. Barrack's race was a joke. He floundered about in the going badly and was beaten off from start to finish. The second race, a dash of six furlongs, seemed to be a gift for Burnie Bunton, as tho only one that appeared to have a remote chance with her was Gonfalon. The latter, however, cannot extend himself with freedom in muddy going and therefore fell an easy prey to Burnie Bnnton's speed. She tbot to the lead at flag fall and simply ran away from Gonfalon, winning in a canter by eight lengths, while he beat Empress of Beauty three for second place. That good filly Merriment again proved her worth by taking a fair field of two-year-olds into csmp in the third- race, a dash of five and a half furlongs. Bhe was supposed to have a merry competitor in Evening Star, but the latter fell while at the poBt, throwing jockey Dom-inick. Tbe accident must have injured her in some way as she finished beaten off in going made to her order, coming in a dis-mel laBt. Julia Junkin flashed in front for a short spell, when Merriment was called upon, and tbe way she ran away from her field was a caution. She won with the greatest of ease by three lengths from Autumn Leaves, which finished about the same distance in front of Inspector Shea. Autumn Loaves finished strongly, but had no cbance.to beat the winner. Inspector Shea tired rapidly in the run in, just lasting long enough to get third money from Lucitn Appleby, which would have beaten him out in a Btride or tw6. Lucien Appleby was badly outrun in the first part of tho race, but was moving fast in the last sixteenth. Julia Junkin is probably not enamored of the mud, as she quit badly soon after tho first half had been run. Miracle II., known to be partial to muddy tracks, ran an indifferent race. Legal Maxim showed well for a part of the way. He does not call for much notice. Frelinghnysen, a rank outsider, took the day's opener, a dash of six furlongs, without much trouble. He was backed by a wiEa few on the good Bhowing made several days ago with 122 pounds up and on account of his known liking for soft footing. Harry Herendeen led by a slight margin up to the laBt quarter where he was beaten and Frelinghuyeen assumed command. The latter kept gradually improving his advantage while coming down the laBt eighth finally winning easily by a length from C. B. Campbell, which beat Seguranca two for second .place, C. B. Campbell closed up with a rush in tho last sixtaonth but tired badly in the j closing strides. Seguranca showed a big improvement over( her laBt effort in the same going. She is on edge now and should be a hard mare to beat hereafter in muddy going. Valdez, long overdue, liquidated his feed bill by taking tho fifth race, a dash of one and one sixteenth miles in a big romp. First Frank Ireland and then Miss Liza took a turn at the ushering game, but along about tho first half Valdez was called upon and quicker than can be told he opened a gap on his field that he gradually increased until by tho time he roached the last eighth post he was eight lengths in the lead. From here to tho wire he was eased up winning by three lengths from Fantasy, which beat Linden Ella six for second place. Fantasy was easily the best of the others. Whatever chance Tammany Chief had in tbe raco was spoiled by Hope's bungling ride. He had him in and out over all the track and finally got him jammedlin against tte inside rail at the last eighth post. Frank Ireland and Miss Liza ran well for (six furlongs. The last race of the day went to Stella kins, which took to the going like a duck to water. She went to the foro at the barrier's rise and the result was never afterward in donbt. She finally won eased up by two lengths from SteplOnward, she beating Herodes seven for second place. Step Onward finished strongly, but had no chance to beat the winner. There was little contention back of the first three. Lady Like, backed for a "good thing," Bhowed nofgreat speed to speak of and was hopelessly beaten off at the end. B. Steele was fined $25 and suspended fcr a week forrmisbehavior while at the post in the first race. No Clash with Latonia NO CLASH WITH LATONIA. A week ago it was believed that racing would be resumed at Newport yesterday, but the opening day was again postponed. Concerning the matter yesterday'BiCincinnati Commercial Tribune said: "Fromlpresent indications it looks as if there will be no clash between Newport and Latonia this fall. W. O.JParmer and J. W. Russwurm, of Nashville, Tenn., arrived here yesterday evaningjfrom Lcuisvillo, where they had been in consultation with Colonel J. J. Douglass, the proprietor of the trotting track in that city. Pnrmorlhas secured an option on tho track, and a meeting will be held at that point. Parmor came herelto consult with Manager Fowler and arrange the date of the mooting so as not to clash with Newport. "TheldateB for the Newport meeting, however, have not been announced, so Parmer failed to gat the ?deeired information. Tho Executive Committee of the Newport track will meot this morning! and settle the date question, "Parmer's!idea iB for Newport to take up tho running at once and continue until October 26, tho datelof thelopening at Latonia, While the races aro going on at the latter track the Turf Congressjhorses will be running at the Douglass trackat Louisville. As soon as Latonia closes the running will be taken up at Newport and continue at least up to December 1, and perhapB all winter. "Thisjproposition will be made to the executive committee of the Newport track this morning, andmore than likely it will be accoptod, and the ?gates will open on next Tuesday or Wednesday. "Speaking of the proposed scheme, Parmer Baid : 'I have been at St. Louis and have applications from numerous stables for the proposed meeting at Louisville. The track is in good condition, and all that is necessary is more stablo (room, and that can easily be arranged, There are over 1,100 horses at St. Louis, and, as the game winds up there on October 31, some provision must be made for them, I was in hopes that everything would bo settled as far as the dates for Newport are concerned, and I expect that they will ba tomorrow; atleaBtl am told so. As soon as that point is settled I will be in a position tovgo ahead with the Louisville project.' "J. W. Busswurm, who succeeded Parmer in tbe judges' stand at Newport during the long meeting held laBt summer, said: ' I think that a meeting at Louisville would ba a winner, as the public there has never been overdosed. Another point to consider, it will give the Turf Congress horses another outlet and will concentrate the strength of the organization in this section. Tho concentration of a large number of horses and owners ia what makes the New Orleans meeting a buccoss.' Mr. Busswurm, who is a man of peace, acknowledged that negotiations have been going on between the warring factions, but tho basis of a fair compromise for both haa nevor been reached. It would come, ho said, in the near future. Messrs, Parmer and Busswurm returned to Nashville last night. "For the past two days it has appeared as if there was something on for the Newport track, as Manager Fowler, Joe Bhinock, former Mayor of Covington, and Joe Pugh, Chief of Police of Covington, have held several consultations at the Stag, Juot what is doing no one seems to know, but the mooting of the executive committee of the track this morning may shed some light on the subject." No Decision at St. Louis NO DECISION AT ST. LOUIS. Several affidavits were filed Friday in Division No. 5 of the Circuit Court in the suit of Attorney General E. C. Crow to restrain book-making at the Fair Grounds. One was by Morton Jourdan, who states that he asked State Auditor A. O. alien for the privilege of issuing half of tbe licenses to bookmakers, the work to be done in his name by S. C. Sogers and E. N. Robinson, a brother of Owen Robinson, who would receive the compensation. Allen agreed to the proposition', he states. There was no limitation in regard to the issuance of the licenBos. Ho denies that he stated to Mr. Allen at Springfield, after tbe licenses wore issued August 6, that certain persons induced Rogers to issue tho licsnsee. Ha met Allen on August 10. He told Allen of tbe issuance of the licenses, and Allen at first expressed himself as satisfied, Jourdan states. Later in the day Allen told him ho was going to inquire into tho matter, but said he would protect Jourdan, the latter states. Allen said, eo Jourdan deposes, that if he could he would favor Ed Butler in the matter; that Butler was his friend, and had baon kind to Seibort. Jourdan claims that Rogers and Robinson had authority to issue the licenses. He referred to the affidavit of R, F. Walker, who was also delegated to issue licenses to bookmakers, in which Walker stated he would not delegate his authority to any one. Jourdan says that Walker on one occasion sent- Robineon to the racetrack to act for him, and on another occasion called up by telephone and requested that Rogers or Robinson be sent to act in his place, Jourdan denies that he was told by Allen not to issue licenses after August 13, The depositions of Rogers and Robinson wore aleo filed yesterday. Rogers states that Walker called him up on several occasions by telephone and sent him to the race track to CONTINUED ON FIFTH PAGE. NO DECISION AT ST. LOUIS. Continued from First Page. issue licenses. Both Rogers and Robinson state they issued licenses with the knowledge of Allen, and that there were no restrictions. Walker in his affidavit stated that a few days before August 6 Allen came to him and said he had grave doubts whether he could issue licenses after August 13, and that if he desired any licenses to be issued he would notify him. Allen -also said, Walker states, that he would notify Jourdan and his other representative and the attorney for the Delm ar association. Judge Fisher, who presides in courtroom No. 5, has the case under advisement. His court will not be in session today, so no decision can be rendered before next Monday. St. Louis Republic. Lester Reoff LESTER RE CFF. Discussing the recent ruling off of Lester Reiff in England, the Spirit of the Times says : "That there.has been something wrong seems certain, but what, is not tangible. Possibly the most pertinent statement, is that credited to Charles Doherty, just returned, who says that 'the Eeene stable was the only one to receive decent treatment this year.' Wishard, of course, stands by Reiff, who very naturally disclaims everything. Huggins also is quoted as believing that there was nothing wrong about the race. On the other hand, Mr. Corrigan, it i is rumored, will not race in England next I season, and it is also rumored that there will be j several changes in American surroundings in England.next year. The London Evening News alBO says: 'Many English racing men will not accept Mr. Whitney's cabled reasons for retiring from the English turf. They aver that the bad handicapping and loose riding are enough to disgust even a millionaire.' There is undoubtedly something more than appears at present and time will bring it to tha surface. In the case of Sloan just as strong evidence was produced and claims made, but the fact remains that Sloan neither applied to the Jockey Club of this country to ride nor made his much talked of pilgrimage to England to demand an investigation. Yet the English Jockey Club was careful not to take any action which should reflect on Sloan in this country if he applied for a license. In the Reiff case they have gone a step further, and it will be interesting to note developements, Reiff was very prominent here a few years ago; he made tha highest percentage and number of wins of the year, but after his Californian suspension seemed to fall away. Prominent western turfmen claimed that he was not all to blame in that matter. "It is worthy of special notice that there is nothing but praise in the English press for Danny Mahor, and other American jockeys, and any apparent feeling is only directed against those Americans who, to say the least, have not been prominent in eastern or metropolitan racing circles of late years. This applies broadly to owners, trainers and jockeys. "The American record of Reiff muBt be taken into strict consideration, and also tha well-known attitude of the English Jockey Club as to even the suspicion of fraud of any typs as shown in tho ruling off of Charles Archer (brother taFred Archer) and the suspansion of Wood (when he was premier jockey) for.fiva years. Such action taken on English boys in the paBt, points a strong precedent to tho present case 'of Reiff, and timo, which ventilates most things, will probably mako all this regrettable tangle mora clear than it is at present. "From latest reports there is likely to be similar trouble in France, where Frenchmen aro complaining of Songor, Mclntyre (who has boon set down), Henry and also Reiff. An American commenting on the situation says: 'If this continues and the American boys aro sot down a great cry will go up that Frenchmen are jealous of the success of the American riders. Tho contrary is tha case. They have bean too lenient. They should havo stamped out from the beginning all tendency to crookedness and sharpness. Unfortunately, their own jockeys are so bad that thay think it is the usual thing to bo swindled from time to time.' This iB a rather strong view to take, but not more so than was taken some months ago of one or two American jockeys in England, As stated above, the great bulk of the American boys are in no trouble, are highly thought of and are doing wall," Page [2] Dallu Racing Form IB8UKD 25TSHY DAY, Western JocReij GluD Bulletin OFFICIAL OBQAM OF THE WESTERN JOCKEY CLUB. 3SDITOB AKD PKCPKIKTOH, F. Whiskey King broke in the .rear and was handicapped by his small jockey, who was unable to do him justice. He was probably best, as he was running on strongly at the end and jumping on the winner's heels. Chilton -was carried along so fast that he quit in the last furlong. Ethics, show, 1 to 3, Gossip of the Turf GOSSIP OF THE TURF. Concerning the sale of Endurance by Right to W. C. Whitney, the New York Bun of Friday said: "William C. Whitney added the champion filly Endurance by Right, by Inspector B. Early Morn, yesterday to his already formidable string of two-year-olds. At Morris Park it was announced that John E. Madden purchased the great filly from John W. Bchorr of Memphis on Wednesday night and that Madden then sold her yesterday morning to Mr. Whitney for a price that was generally reported to be $35,000. In securing Endurance by Bight Mr. Whitney not only purchases her running qualities, but will also send her to his breeding establishment when her career on the track is ended. It was currently reported yesterday that Mr. Madden merely acted for Mr. Whitney in the transaction and that Mr. Bchorr recieved $35,000 for the daughter of Inspector B., but Mr. Madden insisted that two separate sales took place. It is understood that Clarence H. Mackay also had an option on the filly for $30,000 which he waived. In taking Endurance by Right into his stable, Mr. Whitney has the pick of the two-year-old division, barring, of course, Mr. Mackay's Heno, winner of the Matron Stakes, and L. M. Myers' Leonora Loring, who won the Great Filly Stakes, but was disqualified because of a technical error in her entry. Mr. Whitney now has Nasturtium, for whom he paid $50,000; Yankee, the Futurity winner; Goldsmith, a superb racehorse, who is believed to have a brilliant future ; King Han-over, a stake winner; Gold Seeker, a rattling good colt; Blue Girl, winner of many rich Btakes, and considered the best filly out, until Endurance by Right demonstrated her marvelous speed and stamina ; ProtoriouB, Metalbert, Gunfire and other crack youngsters. With Endurance by Right added to this list, it can be seen that in the big three-year-old events next year Mr. Whitney will cut a wide swath." T. H. These yearlingB are an exceptionally fine lot and can run fast : Chestnut colt, by Wadsworth Fonsie (dam of Wyoth, Tom Cromwell), by King Alfonso.
