VII. yp. 252. CHICAGO, STJypAY7bCTO'KEIl 20, 1901. PRICE 5 CEKTS Argregor's Fast Race ARGE EG OB'S FAST BACE. Almost ideal rEcing weather prevailed at Worth yesterday ard tho popular Chicago Bidge couree booked its banner day of att.ud-anee. The track was almcBt at Hb best and a better day's sport hes not been seen hereabout in eometime. Betting was unusually brisk, the bookies getting the beet patronage of the meeting thus far. Ab usual the half-holiday crowd ras on hand but in larger numbers than heretofore. The feature event waB the Blue Island Handi-cay for three-year-olds and upward at one and one-quarter miles, with $l,0CO added. Much interest was taken from the contest by the withdrawing of Barrack, St, Marcos and Federal at the last mcmsnt. Even at that a field of eight faced the barrier, the adjustment of the weights giving them all a supposed chance to take down the plum. Argregor waB always a prime favorite in the betting, being held at 0 to 5, while the Hildreth entry, Searcher and Boiling Boer, was made the second choice. Argregor justified the belief that Denman Thompson beat him by a fluke the day before by putting up a clever performance and winning in impressive style. Haviland, closely attended first by Searcher and then by Kentucky Babe, set a hot pace for a mile and an eighth, where Winkfield, who had held Argregor always within easy distance of the leaders, called on him and he responded with a rush, beating Haviland to the line rather handily'by a half length, while the latter finished a length before Kentucky Babe. Havi-land's race was a good one and ha held on longer than usual. Kentucky Babe ran the best race of her career. Strangest finished fourth and would have been much closer up at the finish if he had not been pocketed against the inside rail in the last eighth Boiling Boer and Searcher had enough when a furlong out. Sen-man Thompeon was always outrun and failed in the laet quarter to show his usual powerful finishing ruBb. The day's opener went to Tom Byan's The Pride after a vigorous ride through the final furlong. It was a eeven furlongs dash, for which Federal was held as equal choice with bim, both of their odds hovering around the even money mark. At flag fall The Pride shot to tho front at once and held a commanding lead to the last eighth poet, where Federal closed up on him. Tho latter, although under strong preEEure in the closing Btrides, could not quite get up, The Pride winniDg by a long neck with Tom KingBley third, six lengths back of Federal. Both Tom KingBley and Lady Elite-showed well for Bix furlongs, but were very leg weary by the time the line had been reached. Little Elkin proved too much the beBt in the second race, a run over a mile and a half route. Linden Ella started out to make the running and held a good lead for the first seven furlongs where she had enough and fell back beaten. Little Elkin then took up the pacemaking and remained in front thereafter to the end, winning easily by two lengths from El Caney,-he beating Barilla the same distance for second placo. Coburn rode a clever race on El Caney, but the winner was too much for his mount. Barilla, the favorite, ran below expectations, tiring badly when the pinch came and had all she could do to outlive Yaldez for third place. The latter was tho medium of a heavy plunge, but tired and Bprawled badly in the last oighth. St. Cuthbert waB thought to havo a mortgage on the third race, a five furlongs dash, being always held at even money or less in the ring. He got off none too well but succeeded in getting into the lead by the time the stretch turn had been reached but along about the last sighth he waB joined by Alzura. The latter proved too much for him in the last fifty yards, gradually drawing away and winning by a length. Small Jack finished stoutly next to the inside rail in the last eighth and was lapped on St. Cuthbert at the finish. Emma B. as usual showed early epeed but faded away rapidly when the rub came. St. Cuthbert had not raced in some time and the race should do him good. Georgia as customary ran a dull race even with Coburn in the saddle. Tammany Chief, after many attempts here lately, finally put one over the plate, winning the fourth race, a dash once around the circle, in a rather easy fashion by a length from Evelyn Byrd, which finished three lengths before Chorus Boy for second money. Evelyn Byrd led up to the last sixteenth and appeared all over tho winner, but quit when challenged by the winner in the last fifty yards. Eva Bice showed a little early Bpeed, but tired and fell back when the head of the stretch had been reached. The last race of the day proved an easy thing for Mabel Winn, which made her field look cheap. It was a five and a half furlongs scramble for two-year-oldc, and it was supposed to be a sixteenth further than she likes to go ; but she gave the lie to such a belief by winning in a cantertby five lengths from Queen W., she beating Santa Teresa three; lengths for second placo. Zibia showed quite a turn of speed for a half mile, but grew leg weary rapidly in the last quarter. Santa Teresa flniehed fast, nipping Jane Oaker on the post for third money. It is reported in New York that Danny Maher, the only American boy in England who has invariably received kind words from the turf critics, will be paid $25,000 as a retainer by the Duke of Devonshire. Tho announcement made Friday to the effect that Maher had received this engagement caused considerable pleasure to the I metropolitan racing men. Maher waB very popular in New York. He went to England to ; ride for the late Pierre Lorillard. By being retained by the Duke of Devonshire, Maher becomes, so far as the social ladder of the race world is concerned, the premier jockey of England, and also the royal jockey, for King Edward's racing string is racing under Devonshire's name. When Queen Victoria died the King had to transfer the horses he ran as Prince of Wales. Thoy include Diamond Jubilee, winner of last year's Derby. Maher is to get, in addition to his retainer, which is the biggest ever paid to an American, a princely salary. The Duke, and of course, the King, will have his services exclusively. The only jockey who ever equaled the figures to be paid Mahor was Fred Archer, the greatest jockey Enaland ever turned out. Said the Cincinnati Commercial Tribune of yesterday: "It is said that the Campbell County Grand Jury, now in session, will make a partial report today, and in Which it returns an indictment against F. F. Fowler, manager of tho Newport race track. The charge is that of conducting a betting ring at the Newport track during the race meeting held last spring and Bummer. The authorities secured sufficient evidonce to prove to the jury that tho laws had been violated. It is also rumored that a number of bookmakers that wore at the track will meet a similar fate. "The indictment does not come as a surprise to Manager Fowler, and he has stated that he feels thoroughly safe behind the charter of the Queen City Jockey Club. He claims that the charter, or rather tho articles of incorporation, of his track places it in the same position as all CONTINUED ON FIFTH PAGE. GOSSIP OF THE TURF. Continued from First Page. other race tracks in the state of Kentucky. The codification of the Kentucky laws knocked out all special legislation by the Legislature and put Latonia, Louisville and Lexington on the same footing as the Newport track." .A life size painting of the' great two-year-old Nasturtium, by Henry Stull, is to be presented to William C. Whitney by the trainers of the metropolis. No subscriptions will be received from owners, jockeys, etc., the trainers only, as a body, desiring to thus demonstrate their appreciation of Mr. Whitney's efforts in behalf of racing interests generally, and particularly in connection with the Saratoga Association, the large increase in stakes and purses, which is directly due to him and the great impetus given to breeding by the large amounts paid for Hamburg, Meddler. Nasturtium, Endurance by Right, and so many other high priced thoroughbreds of various ages. New York report Bays that Eddie Burke is a bigger loser on the season's racing than any other bookmaker has ever bean in this country. He is credited with being $150,000 loser on the year, and there are only a few days for him to get back part or all of that immense amount of monoy. Burke is probably the largest operator this country 'has ever seen. He operates in thousands where others deal in dollars. At Westchester last year he was a big loser, but on the closing day of the meeting they broke well and he quit something like $10,000 winner on the day. Mr. Burke is not alone in his bad luck. Other big operators are in the same box, their losses ranging from $25,000 to $100,000. The present meeting has been eapeciallyjdisastrons to them. Mr. Edward Corrigan's greatest success in England is with English-bred horseB and he won at Manchester with Fancy Man, by Best Man, and Semper Vigilans, by Carbine. Fancy Man won the Prince Edward Handicap of 1,670 sovereigns, carrying 91 pounds, and running a mile and a quarter in 2 :03, This is an English record for the distance. At the same meeting Mr. M. I'Anson's Bread Knife filly Loch Doon ran five furlongs in 57, when she won the Palatine Handicap. The best English record for the distance is 57, by Othery, at Epsom, three years ago. Exchange. Colonel Charles Green, of St. Louis, waa in Cincinnati a few days since and in the course of an interview said : "I have been on a short visit over in Indiana, among old frienda, and am on my way back to St. Louis. No, my visit here has nothing to do with racing. We have had one meeting this year of thirty days at the Fair Grounds, and the present meeting will continue for the same length of time. The racing, with us, has been successful, viewed from every standpoint this year. I believe that the differences between the American Turf Congress and Western Jockey Club are in a fair way to settlement, although I know nothing personally in that connection. From what I have heard recently I feel tolerably certain that the trouble will be adjusted within the next few weeks. I had intended giving a ten days' race meeting at the Lexington track, commencing about November 15, but as I hear of a coming fall meeting at Louisville at the Douglas track, I am inclined to ' believe my plan will have to be abandoned. I had. not formally announced that I would giva the meeting." Colonel Green said the prospect for good racing next year was excellent. Ha felt that there would be no more fighting among racing associations, as this season's experience has been too costly to be repeated." John Walters, the Canadian horseman, has arrived at Nashville and is in charge of Goorga Hendrie's stable, which will winter there. J ohn Greener's stable is in fine condition and he has some of the btst looking two-year-olds in the country. William Gerat, who bagged several purses at the last meeting, was not content with the quality of his racers, and has bought a now Btable of one to three-year-olds, and will be in position to capture rich stakes. The stable of Frank Bruhn, who recently sold Ben Mac Dhui for $10,000, will also winter there as well as stables of Harry Franklin, who owns Paper j Maker and other well-known racers. The other stables wintering there will ba those of J. M. Johnson, Albert Franklin, Scott P. Hardin, Ed Moore, Tom Hayes and Wm. Hayes. In all 500 horses will winter at Nashvillo. Ten yearlings belonging to Chinn & Forsytho, and shipped from Harrodsburg, Ky last week, have arrived at San Francisco, and will be prepared for the spring races. It was a good race for her. the track and conditions considered, and she showed that she can pack high weight, come from behind and stand a drive, all of which she was not supposed to do. A. D. Gibson ran a good race and held on surprisingly well. Miss Thresa finished strongly as usual. Menace ran a bad race without mishaps. Salve needs a strong rider to make him do himself justice.
