Keono has become the owner of tho fine Caetleton farm, near Lexington, which he has for some years past rentod aB a home for his stallions and broodmares. Here he has a collection second to none in America in winning blood lines, and from it others liko Commando, Conroy and Cap and Bells are destined to come. Of this big breeding farm and its equine tenants Turf, 'Field and Farm says: "The Messrs. Keeno now have over 1,000 acroB in Caotleton Stud Farm, affording a big range for tho brood mares and colts. It is a fine grazing country and tho stock look remarkably well. Tha autumn leavss strewed the ground when wo drove up to tho old-fashioned houeo and woro warmly greeted by Maj. F. A. Dangorfleld. The first stallion led out upon the lawn shaded by aeh and maple was the groat srrinter Voter. Ho has just boon thrown out of training, and will be got ready for the stud in the spring. No doubt is entertained about his ability to sire the highest rate of speed. At a respectable distance from the heels of Voter stood Commando, another frosh arrival from New York. Previous to going amiBB he was regarded as the moBt CONTINUED ON FIFTH PAQE. I CASTLETON 8TUD. Continued from First Pag. formidable three-year-old in training. His left foreleg shows the marks of a severe blister, and Major Dangerfield hopes to get it into a reasonably sound condition with mud and other bandages. The Major has no use for the firing iron, the general refuge of the veterinarian in doubt. Commando will onter the stud, and is expected to transmit the speed which he inherited from Domino. After a year's rest the question of training him again will be settled. St. Leonards, as the sire of Conroy, stands higher in the public estimation than he did one year ago. As he stood where the sun fell upon his healthy coat and revealed his muscular power and symmetry, he was a horse among ten thousand. Mr. James R. Keene writes that the best yearling thus far tried is the filly by Bt. Leonards-Splendour. Horoscope is another fine-looking and powerf ally-coupled horse. He stands 15,2 hands, and Major Dangerfield estimates his colts as second to none at Castleton. Bsn Brush, by Bramble, and Handspring, by Hanover, were led out together. They were earnest rivals on the turf, sometimes one vanquishing the other in stake battles, and now they are rivals in the stud. Ben Brush is of the cob type, and Handspring of the finer racing type, and it will be interesting to see whioh will produce the larger number of stake winners. Although Handspring stands 16.2 he does not weigh as much as the short-legged Ben Brush. Mr. Keene thinks very highly of the Ben BruBh yearlings. They havo responded favorably to the Bharp question asked them on the track. The yearling filly by Ben Brash out of the dam of Conroy ranks second in point of merit to the Bt. Leonards Splendour filly. Eighteen mares were bred to Ben Brush this season. The last stallion to appear upon the lawn in front of the house was Kingston. He fills the critical eye as no other horse does, combining quality with substance and poise with great muscular power. He was a picture to be indelibly stamped upon memory as he stood on the carpet of blue grass bespangled with the gold of maple leaves, and with sun shadows chasing over his rich brown coat. Thirty-two mares were bred to Kingston this season; and Mr. Keene has refused an offer of $10,000 for ten mares for him next Bpring. Castleton is now so well equipped with stallions as to make it entirely independent of other breeding establishments. "In one of the fields we found a band of famous mares. Lady Reel (dam of Hamburg), for which Mr. Keeno recently paid $11,000, was conspicuous in the group. She looks well after the journey from England, and is believed to be in foal to St. Simon. Mr. Whitney, it will be remembered, paid $16,000 for the yearling filly by St. Simon Lady Reel, and Mr. August Belmont paid $25,000 for the weanling filly by St. Simon Lady Reel. Should the -famous mare produce a live foal next spring by St. Simon, Mr. Keene will have no occasion to regret paying $11,000 for the daughter of Fellow-craft and Mannie Gray. Field Azure, by Ben d'Or, cost Mr. Keene $18,500 under the hammer, and she is a -mare that would- command attention anywhere. She looked as if she enjoyed the blue grass of Kentucky as well as the graBB of her native land, England. She is thought to be in foal to Lb Yar. Mr. August Belmont paid $13,500 for the weanling colt by St. Simon out of her. Optime, by Orme, cost $6,600, and Sandfly, by Ieonomy, also challenged attention. The highest-priced yearling filly sold in England is out of Sandfly, and the mare is now in foal to Trenton. Some of these imported mares were inclined to fight each other, and Major Danger-field explained his infallible remedy for this state of affairs. Separate the two fighting mares from the rest of the crowd and confine them in a paddock by themselves and they will quickly become the best of frionds. The theory is that horses enjoy each other's Bociety, and that the two quarrelsome ones forget their squabbles when restrained to their own company. -The two weanlings which came from England with the Marcus Daly lot the brown filly by St. Frusquin Semper Fidslo and the bay colt by Donovan La Belle III. are not as large by a hundred pounds or more as tho average Castleton yearlings. This would tend to, show that we can grow colt3 as well, if not hotter, in this country than in England, "There was never a finer lot of weanlings at Castleton Stud, They are: Bay colt, by KingstonCalico; brown colt, by Trenton St. Mildred; chestnut colt, by Isidor Starlight; chestnut colt, by St. Leonards Indifference ; bay colt, by Kingston Ella T. ; brown colt, by Kingston Katherine II. ; brown colt, by Hamburg Pastorella ; bay colt, by Ben aBrush Fairy Slipper; .chestnut colt, by Horoscope-Handmaid; bay colt, by Kingston Sundown; bay colt, by Horoscope Hope On ; brownjcolt, by Ben Brush Maid of Dorset; brown colt, by Ben Brush Veva; chestnut colt; by Horoscope . Leonards Dusk, and brown filly, by Bt. Frusquin Bem-per Fidele. The Messrs. Keene, therefore, have an abundance of the best material for future battles on the turf. Forty of the yearlings aro now with Rowe and some twenty are at Castleton. It is one of the greatest breeding establishments in the world, and yet, strange to say, Mr. James B. Keene has never seen the place." St. Marcos Wins Again ST. MARCOS WINS AGAIN. Worth started in the last week of its season for 1901 with a cracking good card yesterday. The gathering was by far the best Monday crowd of the year, the almost ideal weather that prevailed probably causing the unusually large attendance. No stake event was up for solution, but the St. Marcos-W. J. Deboe contest was almost as good as a feature race and was replete with excitement in the final strides. St. Marcos was supposed to have tha race at his mercy, being always held at 3 to 5 in tha batting. For a time in tha last eighth it appeared as if W. J. Deboe had him, but in the closing strides St. Marcos came fast and true and won rather easily at the and. Fancy Wood, closely attended by Benckart, led on sufferance up to tha turn for home, where W. J. Deboe moved up fast and got clear of his field when nearing the last eighth post. It seemed very much as if he had St. Marcos beaten along in here, as Coburn was riding the latter vigorously. In the, last hundred yards, however, St. Marcos gradually closed on him and finally wore him down, winning by a length, while W. J. Deboe beat Benckart four for second place. The last named ran well for six furlongs. Fancy Wood ran in much improved form and is now nearly on edge. She is worthy of consideration from now on. The Pride, despite the fact that ho got away none too well in the second race, a dash of six furlongs, finally wore down hiB field after the first half mile had been run and had easy Bailing thereafter. Pigeon Post closely followed by Sea Qneon showed the way until just before bending for home where The Pride moved up with a rush and was Bailing in front in a few strides. He won easily by a length while Bea Queen beat Vulcain two and a half for second place. 8ea Queen showed a good turn of speed and should be a hard horse to beat at sprinting distances. Vulcain closed up stoutly in the laBt eighth. Pigeon Post faded away fast in -tho last quarter. Ben Battle appeared to be outclassed. The day's opener was taken by El Ghor in a desperate drive by a nose from Lord Boberts, he beating Chorus Boy a length for second place. El Ghor ran in much improved form over his last performance. Chorus Boy was the best, but Otis threw away whatever chance he-had of winning by taking him back in the first half when he was lying in a good position. The horse was taken wide at the turn for home and then finished fast, but too late to be of any avail. Monos ran a dull race. C. B. Campbell ran well for seven furlongs. Ho runs best in the mud. Lucien Appleby proved to be the'b3st in the third race, a dash of six furlongs for two-year-olds. He came from sixth position in the first quarter and gradually closed up on the leaders, getting up in time to win by a neck on the post from Pyrrho, he beating John A. Clarke a head for second place. Tho race was sharply contested throughout and hardly two lengths separated the first and eighth horses at the finish. Pyrrho ran a surprisingly good race, as it is known that he runs best in the mud. Queen W. and Bose Plume faltored whon the pinch came. B. G. Fox proved to bo much.the best in the fifth race, a dash of seven and a half furlongs . Andes, after a tedious delay at the post of twenty minutes, shot to the front at flag-fall and led clear up to the final sixteenth, where B. G. Fox closed in on him with a ruBh, beating him to the line handily by half a length. Andes finished four lengths before W. B. Gates for second place. The latter was well spent by the time the laat oighth post had been reached. CONTINUED ON SECOND JPAGE, BT. MABCOS WINS AGAIN., Continued from first page. Edith Q. and Siren Song showed well for six furlongs. Coburn threw away the last race of tho day, a dash of one and an eighth miles, on Searcher, going to sleep in the final sixteenth and allowing Omdurman to nip him on the post by a nose. Joe Collins led by a fair margin until well straightened for home, where Searcher took an easy lead and appeared to be winning easily in the last sixteenth, but all of a sudden Omdurman came along like a shot and before Coburn could rally Searcher the former had won the race. It was a rank piece of carelessness. The filly Stella Perkins, which ran second to Gallantrie October 16, has been disqualified by the Worth 'judges having been ineligible to that race under the conditions. Inspector Shea was given second money and Joe Brown third. Page [2] Luc. Appleby 4-1 This good thipg and othr winners we gave our clients yesterday at Worth. "Sheridan Clark, secretary of the Crescent City Jockey Club, returned to tho city yesterday morning from hia summor home at Havorstraw, N. Y., whither he went after tho closing of the Hawthorne meeting at Chicago. Mr. Clark is sscrotary. of tho Chicago Jockey Club also, and officiated at the Hawthorne meeting this summer. He comes south full of enthusiasm ovor the coming winter mooting here, which he says will be far greater than any of its predecessors. This he says is due as much to the attractions offered here as to the general upward impetus given to the sport in the east and north. Now York, he says, has just about closed the best season in its history, and, taking the Hawthorne track for example in Chicago, the attendance was greater than during tho world's fair," says the New Orleans Picayune of Sunday. "Mr. Clark says that the advent of many gentlemen of wealth and leisure on the turf has done much to increase the popularity of the sport in tho east, and tho fact that they do not hesitate to pay a high price for a good horso results in the keenest rivalry among them and at the same time elevates tho sport. "He was asked about the reported intention of some of the big eastern turfmen coming to New Orleans, and said that some of them would not only send springs of horses here, but would come themselves. Clarence Mackay, he said, had entered Heno in the Crescsnt City Derby, and John Madden had entered Pentecost and Slipthrift, W, C. Whitney, who had just announced his retirement from the English turf, promised to send a string of horses here, and eo did Mr. Featherstono. They also said thoy would come tiore during the carnival. Senator Tim Sullivan, who enjoyed himself here immensely last winter, has engaged stable room for ten horses, and his right-hand man, Frank Farrell, has announced his intention of bringing six horses. "Mr. Clark said that in addition to those mentioned from the east, the arrivals would include: John McCaffery, fifteen head; T.McCaf-fery, five head; 'Snapper' Garrison, the once famous jockey, who now owns and trains a Belect stable, with six head; A. H. & D.H. Morris, with twenty-four head; W. C. Daly, fifteen head; A. Weston, ten head; H. T. Griffin, twenty-four head; Frank Taylor, six head; E. P. Headley, ten head; Barney Schreiber, eighteen head, including the colt Otis; F. J. O'Neill, with seven head; J. A. McLaughlin, another old-time jockey, with four head; W. M. Barrick, five head; J. H. Bennett, eight head, and C. C. Johnson, three head, "He said that Sam Hildreth, with thirty-eight head, and Pat Dunne, with eight, were among those who had signified their intention of coming here from tho west. "He is looking for about four hundred horses from the east and about five hundred from Chicago, and these will be piloted by some of the cleverest jockeys in the country, including Co-burn, Odom, Wonderly, Van Dussn, Cochran, the Woods brothers and Landry. Burns and Bullman had intendod coming here, but secured engagements in California and have gone west. "Mr. Clark is looking well and is prepared for a hard winter's work. Ho started in immediately after his arrival to make tho necessary preparations for the meeting and will determine what improvements are needed. It is not likely that many changes will be mado, as everything at the Fair Grounds was in pretty satisfactory shape laBt year, and there is little room for im provement, beyond tho erection of anew grand stand, but that is a matter for the future." Orleans, a much improved mare, was kept out of the early fast pace and brought up at the stretch turn with a dazzling burst of speed. She then won as hsr rider pleased. Tremar showed great early speed and hung on well in spite of A. D. Gibson's tremendous effort to get her out of Brulare's way. A. D. Eophone was cleverly handled and saved for the first mile and then finished strong. Walter Cleary ran a fast and game race at the weights. Curfew Boll was probably best, bnt was very badly ridden thronghout and was going best at the end. Jessie S. cams with a rush in the last furlong, although the weight apparently anchored her in the first part of the trip. Boisterous in improving, has a fine burst of speed and lasted longer than UBual. Sifter and Baby Bill ran badly. Scratched 287562Miss Mitchell, 140; 28828 Owassa, 138; 28756 Lightning, 130. She is fresh and good and was best. Grand 'Opera ran in remarkably improved form, finished very strongly under the whip and ran like a pronounced stayer. Lady Sterling was bustlsd off her stride early and fell back and them came again right at the end. Feme Sole ran extra well at the weights. Flora Pomona evidently disliked the incline. Brunswick, lucky and well handled, drew out right at the end after being apparently beaten and displaying remarkable gameness. He is a rare stayer and possessed of a high order of speed. Lux Casta put up a fast and game race, fighting out the finish with great resolution. Namtor appeared the winner in the stretch, but failed at the end. He broke flat footed, however, and made up a lot of ground in the first half, which evidently told at the end. City Bank was closing up at the end. Tribes Hill tired and quit in the last fnrlong. Schorr, J. H. McCormick and a few other well-known breeders and trainers. It was a lively sale. Although it meant for the sellers only a fall weeding-out of their stables, the bidding was as brisk as often it is in midwinter in the heart of the city. The highest price paid was $3,600 for that good two-year-old of the Schorr stable, Eddie Busch. He was bid in by J. H. Carr after a Bharp sortie by would-be purchasers. J. G.
