Page [1] Lakeside Racing L&KEilDE RACING. j Mud larks wero much in evidence yesterday at ' Lakeside, horses that ran bast in the soft going finishing first in every race. The track was sloppy, bnt in some spots toward the outside rail had dried ont somewhat- Betting was hsavior than un Monday and the crowd was as large as i usual. The principal race of the day, the fourth, a dash of ono mile, was won in hollow fashion by Lennep. She took the track at flag dip and simply spreadaagled hor field, winning by eight lengths from Lucien Appleby, which beat Miracle II. a neck for second place. The last named closed up on Lncien Appleby in the last quarter, bnt faltered in the closing strides. j Corinne Unland proved to ba the best of a poor lot of youngsters in the day's opener, a scramble of sir farlongs for two-year -olds. Crescent City led by a fair margin to the stretch, where Corinne TJnland, under a good ride by Coburn, closed up on him fast and, in a ding-dong finish, beat him ont by a short head. The Stewardess was third five lengths back. The second raca, a split of the first was taken by Autumn Leaves, which won easily by two lengths from Dake of Connaught af tor a short brusn with him in the last eighth . Bragg was only beaton on the po3t by a head by Duke of Connanght for second money. Ho was given a shabby ride and allowed to fall too far out of the race. Golden Glitter ran far below expec. tations. Hag Tag could not extend himself freely in the going. The third race, a dash of one and one-eighth miles, wont to The Joffjraon, which closed up fast in tke last eighth and beat out Farmer Bennett by a koad after a spirited nish neat to the inside rail. Istbay finished third a length away. He seemed all ovar the winner when a furlong out but huug in the closing strides. Edna Bergan ran well for seven furlongs. The fifth race, a six farlongs dash, brought a number of good sprinters to the post, Harry Herendean being backed down at post time to an 8 to 5 favorite. The winner turned up in Aaron, which should have won his last two races. Bummer lod by two lengths when turning into the stretch but along about the last eighth post Aaron moved up fast and after a sharp drive for a sixteenth of a mile drew away in the closing strides and won by a length, Bum- mer beating Braw Lad three for second place; Harry Herendean could not negotiate the sloppy going and gradually fell away beaten after the first quarter had been run. The finale was an easy thing for Banish, which closed up with a rush in the last quarter and won by five lengths from Baird, which bsat Little Elkin three for second place. Baird appeared like he was going to make a runaway race of it when going down the backstrotch, but weakened after turning for homo. Ken-tacky Babe did not appear to relish the going. Charles D. ran a poor race. M. H. Tichenor & Co., have bought of B. Bradley the two-year-old Miracle II. at the reported price of $2,500. Crescent City Stakes CRESCENT CItT STAKE 3. The liberal policy of tho officials of -tho Crescent City Jockey Club of New Orleans in changing its big list of stakes from the guaranteed to the added money system and in an all around increase of the value of purses has attracted tha general attontion I and approval of horse owners and there is abuu-L dant indication that the big city of the south is L destined to enjoy better racing next wintar j stakes offered close for entries tomorrow night I and if any owners, who intend to campaign, at ; New Orleans, have forgotten or neglected to i make nominations it is high time they were , making out their lists. Entries can be Bent to j Secretary Sheridan Clark, 735 Gravier Street, New Orleans, La., or to Harry White. 402 Monadnock Building, this city and any time prior to midnight of to-morrow will do. From down East FROM DOWN EAST. The lacing season just closed waB one of the most successful in the history of the turf. The big crowd at Aqueduct on Saturday was a fitting climax. All the year the attendance has baen phenomenally large, every one of the local racing associations making a heavy profit on its schedule. The racing, taken as a whole, has been high class and remarkably free from scandal, though it cannot be said that things have not happened that the Jockey Club might have looked into with official scrutiny. It is hoped that in another campaign more representative American millionaires will become interested in racing. William K. Vanderbilt is one who intends to have a big Btable in training here. Pierre Lorillard, too, is expected to take a lively interest. Then, of jcourse, W. C. Whitney, J. B. Haggin, the-Keenes, C. H. Mackay, the Morrises, the Hitchcocks, the Belmonts, A. Featherstone and other BportBmen of the true calibre will be in line once more to help elevate the sport as they have done in the past. Nearly all of the leading jockeys have secured lucrative engagements for next season. Turner, Cochran and Burns are to ride for W. C. Whitney, and all of them will receive big salaries. Shaw has Eigned to ride for J. B. Keens and Wonderly will be the regular stable jockey for J. B. Haggin. Redfern will rido for Col. James E. Pepper and O'Connor will -remain with A. Featherstone. Henry Spencer seems to be out in the cold. It was only a year ago that he was supposed to ba at the top of his profession, bnt since his temporary banishment from the turf for his ride on Com-mando in the Matron Stakes in 1910, this noted rider appears to have lost his grip. During the past season Spancor appeared to be in an unfortunate rut. All of his best mounts, nearly, were unsuccessful, and the talent soon avoided his mounts with Btu-Sioua care. Now, the rumor says, Spencer ia going to England to try his luck whero Sloan, Mahor, the Reiffs and others have made them-salvas famous. 8pancar can ride easily at 118 pounds pr even less, and in the estimation of his friends ho is still one of the bBst jockey who ever climbed into the saddle. In England or Borne other European country he may' mako such a hit that American owners will want to have him come back. It was only a few days ago that Sam Doggett had Baveral winning mountB at Aqueduct Though t),a vntnrnn rirlni hiai i Saratoga's Great Stakes SARATOGA'S GREAT STAKES. Having just closed a list of seven stakes calling for the distribution of $55,000 next summer, the reorganizad Saratoga Association follows this up by offering five stakes for 1803 of the com-bined value of $59,000, and two for 19C4 one of which is of the guaranteed value of $50,C0O and the other of the estimated value of $10,000. Here is an opulent promise of what the Saratoga of the future holds in store for the turfmen of this country. Entries to these stakes will close Monday, December 2, 1901 and their conditions are fully sot forth in this issue of Daily Racing Fokm. Such grand offerings dasorve careful consideration at the hands of owners and a measure of patronage that will be ample proof of a lively appreciation of what the Saratoga Association has Bet forth to do for tho betterment of racing.
