Yasterday brought about tlio finish of a memorable local racing season, one replete with good racing:, record breaking performances, abundant patronage throughout and resultant prosperity to all of onr local raciDg organizations. The hundreds of hors6s that have congregated here since last April are fast depart-ing to the centers of winter racing, or to the quiet retirement of a let up in winter quarters, and loal patrons will now have little to do in the line of their favorite diversion until publication of entries for the American Derby, the Brooklyn and the Suburban shall concentrate attention on the possible results of tha big events of next year's racing campaign. The great majority of tha horses now here, have been booked for New Orleans by Harry White and will start on their journey for that cjty tomorrow. Some half dozen strings will go to Ban Francisco and others will go into retirement at Louisville, Lexington and Memphis. The list for New Orleans is the most important and in part is as follows : wainaa Arthur Moroni, AndeB, W. J. One of the most novel propositions in tha bookmaking line ever devised has resulted in furnishing bookmaker Paul Bidley with a $75, 0C0 "roll," with which he is now operating at Oakland. The details are thus set forth in a recent edition of a San Francisco newspaper: This is the time of year the ponies commence their exertions in this state and people whose habit it is to risk their loose dollars on this horse or that ara beginning to wonder if they will be able to pick 'em right. It will be news toths general public to know that tkis year it will not have to beat the "bookies." A company capitalized at $75,000 has been incorporated under the laws of Arizona, and anyone having $50 can buy an interest in the back roll that Paul Bidley is, to manipulate this season. Broadcast over this city and state has been cast literature inviting these 'with a few gold pieces to invest to buy stock in the concern of "Bidley & Company," This literaturo explains the proposition fully. On tho outside of tho company'6 prospectus appears an embossed horseshoe, the 6ymbol of good fortune. The pamphlet's contents have those paragraphs: "This company is incorporated under-tha laws of the Territory of Arizona, -thus insuring that its stock will be non-assessabla and that thare will be no stockholder's liability. OONTIKDKD OS SECOND VA.QB, NEW BOOKMAKING WRINKLE. Continued from First Page. "The Etock in this corporation is offered for sale in blocks of not less than ten shares (at $5 per share), and as it is the intention to keep as much treasury stock as possible, with the object of embracing the profits of those investing, we would suggest that thoBe interested confer with us at once, as it is the intention to commence operations'as eoou as possible after the opening of the local racing season on Novem-her 3d." "The sport" Khorse raciDg), reads the prospectus, "will always remain an attraction to those who love the music of the jingle of the coin. "What better field could be found for the operation of a cold, calculating percentage proposition than in an atmosphere whore the value of money is hardly known and where the i investor even if he loses at first is absolutely aure of retrieving his losses in the end? "The two important questions arising to any .one seeking an investment are: "First. The stability and financial soundness i pf the investment itself; its probability of suc : i 1 cess or failure, and the amount of returns it will make in the shortest tima. "Second. The integrity and hon6Bty of those who are gniding the destinies of the enterprise. 1 ; "In answer to the first question, namely, the soundness and probable success of a booking ', enterprise, we will say : "Have yon ever played the races? "If so, it is entirely needless to ask whether you were successful or not. The only proposition is, how much are you loser? "There are a dczen big racetracks in the United States that during their meetings will average an attendance of 2.C00 to 3,CQ0 people per day, and at the end of a racing season ICQ players cannot be found who are ahead of the bookmakers to any extent." Concerning the integrity and honesty of those at the helm of the enterprise the company has , this to say : . x "A board of directors will have foil control of capital and the power to declare dividends. "The book ittelf-that is to eay the laying of odds and the manipulation of prices can be made by only one man, whose capability must be unquestioned and whose integrity is beyond a doubt. "In this connection we feel satisfied that the name of Paul Bidley will be sufficient guarantee to every one that the business will be honestly and fairly conducted. His standing in betting circles after fifteen yeaTS of turf operations is Bnch that there can be no challenging his ability and squareness." It is also frankly staled that "very often in these daye, since nearly every one has become a student of public form, eome horses esem to have such a slight chance that the bookmaker cannot get them backed at any price, and consequently they have to run 'for the book.' "As a general rule, however," Bidley and Company puts it, "bookmaking nowadays consists of the science of laying the lowest possible prices against the horse the public desires to back, thus making the public the gnesser all the time and giving the bookmaKer the benefits of reversals of form and accidents." Another advantage Bidley claims for his scheme is that it makes it possible for those who lack expert knowledge and have not suffi-' cient capital to operate a book of their own to use a means of investment wnich has been lim-; ited to and has remained in the hands of a "chosen few" who yearly raap immense profits and large returns. A good many eastern turfmen have been in the habit of decrying western form, and some of them thoroughly argued themselves to 'the belief that the western cracks haven't class enough to hold their own in the company of eastern fast flyers. It seems that the past season ought to knock this idea out of their heads, for certainly western owned horeos have Bwept down on eastern fields with a vengo-ance and proved their superiority in many a hard fought field. That clever 3 year-old, Blues haB a long string of brilliant victories to bis credit and Endurance by Bight has established herself as a top notcher among tho two-year-olds. Hernando came out of the west and proved himself more than able to hold his own. Advance Gnard, another westerner, though ho haB been kept going for. ovar two years, summer and winter, without a let up, proved another hard proposition, and on one occasion the light weighted one that beat him had to wipe out tho track record to do the trick. King Pepper, Leonora Loricg, Flora Pomona, etc., etc., are others that proved their quality in enperior company, and western owners have captured a very fair proportion of the money. Again, it iB a fact that during the past two years eastern track managers have been copying western ways in making their tracks faster, and that accounts for many of the new records that have baen hung up on the Metropolitan tracks during the past season. Canadian Sportsman. "Joe Yeager, who has been a most successful race follower, will go into the breeding business qnite extensively shortly. Mr. Yeager owns a farm of 250 acres near Atlantic, la., about fifty miles from Council Bluffs. TMb he is turning into a stock farm. He haB recently built a mod-1 ern stable and a three-quarter track on his farm, and is now busily engaged in buying up good brood mares and is looking for a euitable stallion. George Withers, once a famous jockey, and considered an excellent judge of horseflesh, is transacting Mr. Yeager'e business in connection with his stud farm. Withers will manage the farm and train the horses. It is the plan to start out with a few good two-year-olds and three or four good jumpers for campaigning purposes. The jumpers will be ridden by Withers. Negotiations are now on between Withers, acting for Mr. Yeager, and H. J. Scoggan, the noted Kentucky breeder, for the purchase of a number of highly bred brood mares, in foal to Dr. Bice. Withers intends to attend all the big sales this fall, also, and buy up mares. It is very probable that Bancocas, sire of Raneo, Bed Sam and others, will' be the Yeager stud. Rancocas is at pres ont owned in Texas. "Mr. Yeager'e farm," eaid Trainer Withers recently, "is the most bsautifnl spot in that section of Iowa. It is known as tho Polk Bird Farm. The climate there if most suitable for breeding purposes. There is an early spring and a late fall, and tha grass is green the year aronnd. The Rock Island railroad runs right around it, and you can see a train fifteen miles away. A splendid-stable has already baen built, and a three-quarter track is just being completed. It is an ideal spot, and I think that soma day the Polk Bird Farm will ba well kaown on the turf " Mr. Yeager is a Cincinnati boy. He lives in Norwood and is a son of Colonel Bill Yeager. When Bsird passed successfully under the wire in the last race the local racing season of 1901 was a thing of the past. The betting was brisk and heavy, which is usually the case on getaway days. The feature race of the day was the fifth, a dash of one and an eighth milaa for three-year-olds and upward. Hildreth's entry, Boiling Boor and Searcher, was made a 7 to 10 favorite, while as good as 11 to 5 could bo had against Orontas. Belling Boer proved to be much the ,bost, lying within easy distance of the leaders until wall straightened away for home, where Coburn called upon him, and be came away with a lino display of speed, winning by three lengths, while Odnor finished one and a half in front of Denmau Thompson for second place. Qrontss, while he made up much ground in the last quarter, failed to show that great speed burst that characterized his recent races, Bearchor had enough when a furlong out. Federal was dropped into an easy spot in the fourth race, an owners' handicap at seven furlongs, winning rather easily from Pyrrno by a short length, with Malay an indifferent third. Malay closed up fast in the last eighth nipping the tiring Lennep by a head on the poBt for third money. The track had dried out too fast to suit Lennep. Yulcain had the peculiar distinction of beating the bsBt sprinters in the west when he took the third race, a dash of five and a half fur-longe, in a desperate drive by a short length from Burnie Bunton, which beat Little Jack Horner tix lengths for second place. Yulcain made up ground fast in the last quartor. Burnie Bunton tired slightly when the serene were put on. Money Mues finished a dismal last. He is probably in need of a good long rest. The day's opener, a six furlongs sprint, went to the long overdue Maggie Davis, which beat B. G. Fox rather handily by a length. Tha latter finished fast and just got up in time to beat Bam Lazarus, Esq., by a head on the post for second place. Bam Lazarus, Esq., improved Bomewhat suddenly and showed to much netter advantage than ho showed tho day bafore. Olekma appeared to be tho winner when a furlong out, but tired btdly when the hard drivo came. . Inspector Shea ropsated his good race of the day before, taking the second race, a scramble of five furlongs, by a length and a half from Bag Tag, "which beat Hoodwink one for second place. Bag Tag improved suddenly and ran back to his bast form. Aegin and Amigari ran 'well for a half mile. Stella Perkins ecowed improvement. The mile and a quarter raco rocolved itself into a hot duel between Charley Moore and Ben Chance, tho former winning by a nose. Adme-tus finished third sir lengths back. Charley Moora appeared to be an easy winner in the last eighth, but along in here Ben Chance came with a rush and would have been returned the winner in another stride. Glissando showed well for a little over a mile. The last race of the local eeason for 1901 was taken in a canter by Baird, which beat Evelyn Byrd three lengthB. The latter finished as far in front of Woodstick for second place, Bed Apple and Isabey showed woll for seven furlongs, Notice NOTICE. Says the San Francisco Chronicle of last Son day: "It looka aa though Emperor of Norfolk has raprodacad himself in Cruzadcs, which colt cap- tared the Produce Exchange stakes yesterday for two-year-olds, at six furlongs, in a common canter. Cruaados gave a wonder- fnl exhibition of spasd and spreadeagled hia field in the first quarter of a mile, running the six f nrlongs in tho excellent time of 1:13, which ha doubtless could have reduced by at least three-quarters of a Becond had there j been any other horse in the race to make him extend himsalf. Last spring Cru- sados showed exceptional form, but the opinion prevailed among trainera that the son of Emperor of Norfolk was not up to a bruising race. W. J. Speira, who trains tha Santa Anita bred colt, had expectations of winning this stake with Eacalante, but at the eleventh hour it was found that he was ineligible. This fact became generally known and the rsanlt was that Glendenning carried iha public's money to a great extent, Cruzados receding to 3 to 1 in the betting. The race practically needs no description. Tharo were nine Btarter3, including two or three very speedy ygnngaters, but the way Cruaado3 ran away irtftn them all was a revalatirin. He etapped the first half in 47i seconds, and everything el3s behind him was hopelessly outfooted, even Glendanning, a very last youngster, failing to get within striking distance. Cru-aadoaio a slashing-looking son of Earperorof Norfolk and Atlanta II. and was bred by E.J. Baldwin at Santa Anita. He is the fastest colt ever aired by Empsror of Norfolk, -with the possible exception of Bey del Car-redss, which was purchased by Richard Groker to race in England. While Cruzados did not beat a really high class field, he showed unmistakably that he was the best twoyaar-old now in training in California, and ha promises to be the winter favorite for the California Darbv."
