TO. 28,0. CHICAGO, JFIIIDAT, NOVEMBER 22, 190 1. PRICE 5 CENTS Gossip of the Turf GOSSIP OF THE TURF. J. B. Keene's former champion, Foxhall, is atill alive and well at the age of twenty-five and is one of the sires standing at the Mentmore Stud. The Mentmore Btud was owned by Baron Botha-child and came into the possession of the present Lord Bosebery when he married Hannah, the only child of the baron. The late baron was an ardent admirer of King Tom and nearly all the Mentmore pedigrees trace to him. It was in deed owing mainly to the King Tom blood that the blue, yellow cap of the big banker was so successful on the turf, the Derby winner Fa-vonius and many other good ones being eons of his. The Mansion at Mentmore stands on a hill overlooking the vale of HyleBbury, and the paddocks at the foot of the hill are plainly visible from tho houeo. An enormous bronze etatue of King Tom was placed immediately in front of Mentmore by the late baron, in order that the descendants could have continually a good view of their ancestors before them. It ie plainly visible in making the railroad journey from Liverpool to London by the L. & N. W. Bailway. Hart Gibson, Jr., is suing the Latonia Jockey Club for $12,003 damages, alleging the death of his thoroughbrod Pirate Belle, by Pirate of Penzance Alma T., was caused by an obstruction in the track that should not have teen there. It will be remembered that in the fourth race at Latonia on November 10, 1900, a handicap at a mile and an oighth, Pirato Belle, rid-den by Michaels, fell and broke her neck. Gibson shortly afterward icstitutod suit for $12,000 against the j jckey club, setting forth in his petition that a plank was protruding from the fence and that the filly ran against it. Michaels deposed that the filly stumbled and butted her head into the fence. The flrat petition waB dismissed without prejudice on application of the plaintiff, and a second petition was filed. It will come up for trial at the next term of the Kenton Circuit Court. Horses from Bennings HORSES FUOM BENNINGS. Just one week from yesterday racing begins at New Orloans. It will, be seen by the following taken from the Picayune of November 20 that things are rounding into pretty fair shape: "All the stables but those reserved for tho Now Yorkers who are racing at Bennings are now occupisd at the Fair Grounds. The last consignment from the west got in yesterday, when the special from Cincinnati arrived. In this lot were fourteen carloads. They came over the Louisville & Nashville Bailroad and pulled into the local yards at 7:30 o'clock in the-morning. With tho excoption of ono of W. L. Hazslip's horses, all made the journey in good Bhape. Just after the train pulled out of Latonia the mare Miss Soak took a car fit. 'She waB a wild animal for a few minutes, and, in her roarings and plunging, she turned a complete somersault. Whan help reached her she was lying on her back in her stall, with her feet toward tho ceiling of the car. She was cnt up and brniBed eomt, and the train was stopped at Louisville, where she was unloaded. With the exception of this incident, nothing marred the trip. The horses all looked good' when they were taken off the cars. Secretary Clark and his assistants were awaiting their arrival at the track, and they were all housed in short ordor. Altogether there are now some 800 horses at the track. When the Benniogs special gets in there will be some 1,100 horses here. The association cannot accommodate near this number on the track proper, and the overflow are compelled to Beak quarters on the outside. All the vacant barns in the vicinity of tho Fair Grounds have been rented by these horsemen, and thoroughbreds are quartered as far as a mile from the track. "A partial list of the stables coming from Washington was received by Secretary Clark yesterday. Among the number are a majority of the best horses taking part in the present meeting at Bennings. In all. some 500 head are expected to arrive from that point. Among them will be tho stables of Frank Beagan, who will have eight, including the two-year-olds O'Hagen and Katnerine C, the three-year-olds Gray Dally and Sir Florian; A. H. & D. H. Morris, with eighteen; H. T. Griffin, with twenty-eight; J. W. Pangle, with 6; J. H. Carr, with six; J. J. MacKessey, with 6; B. Reynolds, with six; W. C. Daly, with fifteen; S. S.Tracey, with twelve; F. M. Taylor, with six; E. (Snapper) Garrison, with six; Albert Simons, with fourteen; A. C. McCafferty, with six; Lew Elmore, with four; Robert Hutchinson, with six of John Daly's; Senator Tim Sullivan's stable of five in charge of Archie Zimmer; John Tabor, the ex-jockey, with four; LewTully, with three; H. C. Bchulz, with six; W. Karrick, with five; C. E. Mahone, with eix; H. B. Skilos, with six; Vic Hollar, with three ; J. A. McAuley, with two; 8. N. Holman, with three; Buckley & Bailey, with six; J. E. Madden, with five, and steeplechase jockey Brazil, with a stable of four jumpers. "Sixteen of H. T. Griffin's string are already here. They were shipped from New York by the Cromwell Line of steamers and arrived in good shape. "Charley Yandusen, a popular jockey with local race goers, looking a& bright and chipper as ever, waB out at the track yesterday looking over the horses that arrived on the Cincinnati special. Vandusen has not ridden much since the Washington park meeting. He was taken down with a spell of sickness about that time and went from Chicago to St. Louis, where ho rested up. For the past three or four years Van found it difficult to ride at less than, 115 pounds. CONTINUED ON BKOOND TA.QM, HORSES FROM BENNINGS. Continued from first page. He contemplates doing 105 this winter, and will be eeen in the saddle more frequently, "Tony Wallace, who raced that good colt Sharon here a few years ago, came in with the Cincinnati lot. He has four in his stable this year. Mobo Goldblatt was also among the new arrivals. Monk Wayman, which was Gold-blatt's principal bread winner last season, is not with the stable this year. The old horse was taken down with lung fever while at Windsor. Canada, last summer, and his owner disposed of him. He still has Jessie Jarboe, however, besides several other good ones, among them Callear and Dr. Hart, the latter a two-year-old which he purchased at Latonia a few weeks ago. McCann and CogBwell are the stable's jockeys." Oakland Form Chart OAKLAND FORM CHART. OAKLAND, CAIi.. November 81. Seventeenth day. New California Jockey Club. Fall Meeting. The Great Republic SHE GREAT REPUBLIC. flWhen a racing organization offrs a now .stake of groat valne it at onco arouses the interest and approbation of owners because each can conceive that he may at some time bs fortunate enough to win it. In justice to owners it can be said that they are not often, slack in rewarding auch enterprise on the part of a liberally conducted jickey club and it is not likely that they will fail to take a liberal chance to capture one or all of the huge stakes offered by the Baratoga Association to be decided in 1903 and 1901. Here is not .one great stake alone to consider, but several that will be deemed nearly the most deBirablo prizes of the American turf, while one, The Great Bapublic, will be positively the most valuable. Only once before in the history of racing in this country has its guaranteed value of $50,000 been exceeded and that was when the Washington Park Club made the American Derby of 189S a guaranteed stake of 350,000. It is to be noted that the Great Republic haB this proviso in itB conditions: "If 350 nomination are not r eceived the association reserves the right to cancel the race." This is a precautionary proviso merely and it is not likely that the association will ever be called upon to take action under it. The foal nominations alone should approximate this figure if indeed they do not exceed it. The conditions of this great stake, as well as of the others that are to close with it, December 2, will be found elsewhere in this isBue and Daily Racing Form will, furnish entry blanks on application.
