Page [1] Eastern Turf Prospects. EASTERN TURF PROSPECTS An editorial in the Now York Sun of January 13 predicts a successful year of racing in the east It says Judging from the number and the quality of the horses nominated for the various prominent races of the Coney Island Jockey Club this year the turf is likely to furnish some great sport before the end of next fall Beginning with the Suburban Handicap to be run at Sheepshead Bay on June 14 all of the big races have attracted an unusually large number of thoroughbreds among which are the speediest horses to be found in this country countrySeldom Seldom if ever have so many youngsters of ex ¬ cellent ability been brought out in a single season as were sent to the post last year and if in their threeyearold form these horses shw the speed and endurance which may be fairly expected of them the candidates in that division in the coming season should bo exceptionally able Indeed as the existing scale of weights is generally believed to favor the younger horses it will not be surpris ¬ ing if the threeyearolds succeed in winning a few of the rich stakes stakesThe The performers in that division however are not likely to have so easy a time of it this year as theydidlastivhen horses of mature age were uncommonly few and their owners f6roue reason or another withheld them from several of the more important races Unless all the signs are mislead ¬ ing the fouryearolds of the coming season will be a mighty formidable lot and no lightweight of average ability will be able to take their measure And there is good reason to believe that in the older division also will be found some very useful material materialExperience Experience has shown though that good horses do not always assure good racing Liberal induce ¬ ments in the vayr of purses play an important part in making horse racing attractive and in that direction the conditions which will prevail this year in the east will be all that could be desired Gossip Of The Turf. GOSSIP OF THE TURF The entries for the twoyearold stakes to be run at New Orleans were made public by Secretary Clark Tuesday They show a big increase over last year the four events averaging fortyone entries against something like twenty for last year Among the nominators are J D Crimmins Jr R W Wai den fc Son P Chinn Co B Schreiber P A Ren aud Fred Wood and Calvert Co II T Griflin is the largest nominator he having made as high as eight entries in some of the races The stakes dates of running distances and entries are as fol ¬ lows Wednesday January 29 The Orleans Eailroad EailroadCo Co Stakes 1000 added 38 mile 48 48Monday Monday February 10 The St Charles Hotel HotelStakes Stakes fillies 1000 added 12 mile 43 43Wednesday Wednesday February 19 The New Orleans City CityRailroad Railroad Co Stakes 1000 added 12 mile 25 Wednesday March 5 The Premier Stakes 1000 1000added added 58 mile 49 A partnership has been formed at New York between Frederick C McLeweo and James B Brady During the past racing season the horses Gold Heels Luck and Charity Major Daingerfield and Hindred were raced in the name and colors of F C McLewee although it was said that J B Brady owned a controlling interest in the horses The youngsters that will represent the stable have been named Sweet Annie Page Fair Rosalind Annie Hathaway Falconbridge Prince of Arragon and Avant Courier Peter Wimmer the man who trained and devel ¬ oped Kinley Mack the dual winner of the Brooklyn and Suburban Handicaps in 1900 will train exclus ¬ ively for Captain S S Brown the Pittsburg mil ¬ lionaire this season He has secured permission from Mr Brown to train a sister to Imp for Dan Harness The filly is now quartered at the home farm in Ohio Mr Harness believes she will become as famous as her great sister on the turf Her name is Scioto Louis Ezells Flying Torpedo which the horse ¬ man considers to be the best animal lie ever owned not barring The Lady or Pepper has de ¬ veloped a quarter crack in his off hind hoof and may not race again for several months The acci ¬ dent is a hard blow to Ezell as he thought with a light weight Torpedo had an excellent chance in nrany of the handicaps especially if the track happened to be muddy President Wilson of the Montana Jockey Club states that there will be sixty days racing at Butte and Anaconda this year The purses are to be bigger than last season there being no race for less than 250 There will be auction pools and book betting Racers At Auction.
