GOSSIP OF THE TUKF Speaking about the carrying of dead weight in case the scale of weights is increased Judge Burke has this to say in the Daily Americaof January 24 Raising the weights is a good move if the spirit of it is lived up to but if racing secretaries in con ¬ structing their programs are permitted to so juggle with conditions as to bring the scale down to what it has been in the past of what avail is the at ¬ tempted reform It is all very well to clamor for an increase in weights so that our best jockeys can continue to ride but there ought to be some way of ordering that when a horse carries 140 pounds in a race the jockey who rides him will not be astride of about thirtyfive or forty pounds of dead weight The French horse Codoman started in a big handi ¬ cap in Franco one day last October and carried 141 pounds Ho was ridden by Milton Henry who at that time and even now could ride at 110 pounds Consequently ho was carrying about thirty pounds of dead weight in the shape of a lead pad or a very heavy saddle Where does reform have a chance under those circumstances Very often last year Johnny Reiff rode in races carrying at least fortypoundsdeadweight The year before that it was worse for ho was little more than an infant at that time But he was the regular jockey of the stable and no one else would be entrusted with the mounts And that is just what it will bo all the time under the present plan Wonderlys bodily weight in 1902 will bo about 100 pounds yet he will be riding horses at 120 130 and even 140 pounds right along With little Redfern it will bo very much the same In fact one can name a number of light boys who will be constantly riding their mounts carrying much dead weight Until a man ¬ datory rule bo made that will provide for the middleweight or heavyweight jockeys having mounts every day it will bo of little avail to increase the scale Not that the rule is not a good one On the contrary it is a most excellent one when so fortified that its spirit cannot be evaded Heavy weights on ordinary horses ridden by good jockeys always afford excellent sport What is wanted also is paternal legislation which shall ordain that all owners shall when the weights per ¬ mit put up jockeys who can make the weights and not necessarily jockeys under engagement to tho stable In other words lot it be a rule that the dead weight carried by any horse in an overweight or ordinary race bo limited For a stake the owner of course would bo expected to put up his own regularly retained rider oven though ho was forty pounds lighter than tho weight called for W T Muir has requested the Democrat of Lexing ¬ ton Ky to announce that despite tho fact it has boon rumored and published that he was going to retire from the turf and go into tho trotting horse business he intends to organize another string of horses and will bo on the turf this season with a better stablevthan ho had last year r Tho New Louisiana Jockey Club has announced three new stakes to bo run at their meeting which immediately follows that of the Crescent City Jockey Club The new events are The St Pat ¬ ricks Handicap for thrcoyearolds and upward at a milo and a sixteenth the Flight Stakes for three yearolds and upward at six furlongs and a four mile race Tho first two named have an added value of 1000 each while 2000 will bo added to tho longjdistanco race S C Hildreth who is quartered at Montgomery Park Memphis with his formidable collection of handicap horses has sold to Ralph Black an eastern trainer tho jumpers Worcester Boy Duty and Lothian Tho terms wore private It is said that Black was acting for W C Whitney Black wanted to purchase Filon dOr and Tillo tho latter a Suburban Handicap winner who is being schooled over tho Montgomery Park jumps at pres ¬ ent but Hildroth refused to solli Mr W C Whitney has lost two more valuable fillies from his string the result of chills and other complications The one by Lissak Irish Reel was bred by Mr Whitney and tho second by Goldfinch Mario Adelia was purchased It is almost un ¬ necessary to say that both were promising espe ¬ cially the former her dam Irish Reel being one of tho best marcs out during her racing career The remainder of the lungfeverstricken horses in Mr Whitneys stable are improving but very slowly slowlyThe The announcement that land had been bought and a new race track assured Buffalonians was greeted with pleasure by horsemen there and those along tho border interested in the running trotting and pacing of horses Tho location of the track to tho northwest with approach facilities manifold in character was approved M W Denslow tho west ¬ ern man who with E C Roth conducted tho real estate negotiations has completed transactions with his Buffalo associate for the complete transfer of the property Architects elevations and specifi ¬ cations for tho work to bo done at tho now course are expected in Buffalo inside of ten days and shortly after the contract for the steol work of tho structures will be letr Then work will be Ttisheil There is much to be done some grading and a good deal of construction work but the time is ample Fort Erie was built inside two months and Mr G V Hankins of Chicago who is interested in the present venture built the old Garfield Park track inside of thirty days so that it will be seen there is ample opportunity for the preparation of tho plant for the inaugural meeting which is now expected to start about June 7 Skeets Martin is probably as welloff in the mat ¬ ter of an engagement for this year as any rider who has gone abroad except perhaps Danny Maher Martin is under engagement to ride for Mr J H Muher who is onoof the owners of some thirtysix horses twoyearolds and upward now being trained by A T Gilbert at Rashford Norfolk England The horses are the produce of Melton a successful siro of twoyearold stake winners Arion St Flo rian Ladas St Simon and MacMahon Mr J B Joel one of the South African millionaires also has horses trained in this stable A complete list of tho twoyearolds in the Tiche nor stable is a follows Chestnut colt by Dr Rico Constance ConstanceBay Bay filly by Henry of and won many a purse with tho old mare on western tracks Mr Poole is said to have paid a fancy price for this colt on tho strength of a fast trial The other youngsters were bought by Mr Tichenor All of thorn arc likely lookers Tho Kentucky Derby candidates have not begun to do much work as yet Bennetts trio Abo Frank Ed Austin and Aladdin are reported to have win ¬ tered well at Memphis and if they train on as they promise to do they will no doubt bo tho favorites in tho winter book that will be posted next month Brewer Schorr has admitted it is said that his chances were very poor for the Kentucky classic His only dependence will bo Charles W Meyer a colt that showed rare form as a twoyearold at Memphis last spring It is almost too early to pre ¬ dict however which will win the Derby as it looks to bo one of tho most open Derbys for years as there arc several colts that showed some class last year In addition to tho IJennett and Schorr colts might bo mentioned Wyoth which yas recently sold by Tom Stevens for 10000 CONTINUED ON FOUETH FAGJI GOSSIP OF THE TURF Continued from First Pago The racing days of Robert Waddell are over for this year at least Pa Bradley owner of the Amorican Derby winner has arrived at Hot Springs and made this announcement The gelding says Bradley has gone lame again in his shoulder and will not be asked to undergo a preparation for the forthcoming campaign Bradleys entry in the American Derby is Allie Yirge a full sister to Robert Waddell and he also owns a yearold sister to the last years Derby winner which has been named Allie Violet VioletJ J W Schorr it is reported will abandon the Cal ¬ ifornia turf after the middle of February On Feb jruary 17 all the California division of his horses will be sold and a farewell bid to the coast for some time He will race at New Orleans next winter The senior Schorr has taken occasion to deny rumors of friction which have been scattered lately stating that the string would be taken
