ISTO. 165. CHICAGO, TBIDAY, JULY 11, 1902. , PRICE 5 CENTS Local Turf Gossip I.O CAI. TURF GOSSIP. Jockey Coburn was yesterday suspended indefinitely by the judges from riding for any one but Mr. G. C. Bennett, to whom he is under contract. This punishment was given the jockey for his assault on jockey Buchanan in the jockeys' room, after the Maywood Stakes had been run, and in which race Coburn.' claims Buchanan repeatedly crossed him, thereby ruining the chances of his mount, Savable. M. H. Tichenor, failing in the attempt to see Jau-bert win in his colors, became disgusted with the horse and has presented him to Clint De Witt, in whose colors he will run in future. C. R. Ellison disposed of Ben Battle, ch. g, 5, by Eberlee Battle Belle, yesterday to Alex. Shields for $2,000. The horse will shortly be sent east to join the other horses now raced there by Mr. Shields. T. P. Hayes was a visitor at the track yesterday. He arrived from St. Louis in company with G. L. Crawford. G. C. Bennett returned yesterday from Xashville where he has been inspecting the yearlings owned by him. He reports them all doing well and as a promising looking lot of youngsters. Yesterday afternoon the following was deemed a good guss at the probable fiold of starters for the Young Handicap: Six Shooter, 120, Jiniinez 118, Orontas 116, Argregor 115, Aladdin and Wyeth 112 each, Lucien Appleby 109, Abe Frank 107, Hermen-cia 106, Wild Pirate and Glen Water 95 each, Scarlet Lily 94 and Hunter Raine 93. Of these Wyeth and Glen Water were put down as doubtful starters. Of course the state of the track today will be the determining 'factor that may keep some of this list from starting and of sending others to the post instead. John Mackey, manager for J. B. Haggin and W. C. de B. Lopez, left last night for California. The latter, before his departure, was approached by Mr. Drake, who tried to purchase from him the good handicap horse, Articulate. . Mr. de B. Lopez explained to Drake that he had placed the horse in the hands of R. A. Smith, with instructions to do with him as he saw fit. Should Mr. Smith decide to sell he is at liberty to do so, and as Mr. Drake is desirous of becoming the owner of Articulate, it would not be surprising to hear in the course of the next few days that he had given Smith a fancy price for the horse. W. Walden will ship this morning to his farm at Middleburg, Md., all the horses which raced in his colors at Washington Park. The filly Queen Elizabeth, which was thought to have an eye destroyed by a blow from jockey Blake's whip in the Quickstep Stakes, is reported to be on the improving list and hopes are entertained for the restoration of the filly's sight. Steve L'Hommedieu took a hand in the boosting game yesterday and bid up Flying Torpedo, which won The Midway Stakes, entered to be sold for $2,3C0. The ex-horse owner and plungtr bid him up to $3,500, L. Ezell retaining the horse with an additional bid of $100. Peat, which won the last race, was bid up $500 over his entered price of $1,000 by A. Simons and, as in the case of Flying Torpedo, was retained by his owner with an advance bid of $5. Brighton Beach Form Chart BRIGHTON BEACH FORM CHART. BRIGHTON BEACH, N. Y., July lO.-Fifth day. About the first of August Barney Schreiber will sell a lot of Sain and Balgowan yearlings at auction. He has between thirty and forty at Woodlands and will probably sell most of them. The performances of Otis, Schwalbe, Sofala, Dewey and other good ones should serve to make owners eager to secure these young horses. The sale will probably take place at St. Louis. Washington Park Racing "WASHINGTON PAKE RACING. Flying Torpedo, under a strenuous drive all through the last sixteenth, won the Midway Stakes yesterday at Washington Park in a stirring finish by a short head from Wild Pirate, with Harry New a beaten-off third. It was generally conceded that Flying Torpedo was the best of the quartet that faced the barrier and he was held at 7 to 10 in the betting. Many shrewd bettors, however, strung their money on Wild Pirate as it was whispered about that he was never fitter in his life. To a good start Flying Torpedo at once went to the front, closely attended by Harry New with Digby Bell bringing up the rear. Flying Torpedo increased his lead to two and one-half lengths while going down the backstretch and held that advantage until just after turning for home, where Harry New retired and Wild Pirate moved up almost on even terms with him. Near the last eighth Wild Pirate was running head and head with Flying Torpedo, the two fighting it out to the wire. Wild Pirate stood a long stretch drive in race horse fashion, and undoubtedly ran the best race of his life. Harry New was a keen contender for about seven furlongs, but fell away fast when the deciding drive came in the' last sixteenth. Digby Bell was never aa important factor. The winner was run up $1,300 over his entered price and bid in. Jack Rattlin proved himself to be one of the best sprinters of his age now in training in the west by taking the second race, a dash of six furlongs, in a big romp by five lengths from Herodiade, which beat Burnie Bunton one for second place. Jack Battlin set, a fast pace in the first half and when well straightened for home came away and won as his rider pleased. Herodiade showed to his best form and finished strongly. Burnie Bunton lacked that keen turn of speed that characterizes her racing on a fast track and could never get up. She finished with determination, however. C. B. Campbell was an important factor for about a half mile and then fell away badly beaten. Basselas was much the best in the first race and simply ran away from his field in the last quarter winning under slight restraint by one length from Loone, which beat Semicolon two for second place. Loone finished strongly and was much the best of the others. Semicolon tired fast in the last sixteenth and would have lost third place to Trebor in-a stride or two. Trebor is rounding into his best form and is worthy of attention from now on. Cougar showed early speed. The fourth race went to Corrigan with consummate ease. He led from flag-fall to finish, winning in a canter by two and one-half lengths from Frangible, which beat Yulcain two for second place. Frangible was under keen pressure all through the last quarter, but could not close up on Corrigan. Vulcain ran a dull race. He was apparently out of the contest for the first half, but closed up some around in the last quarter. Prowl ran far below expectations. He showed well for a half mile only, and then gradually fell out of the contest. The light-weighted Emir beat Maghoni a neck in a sharp last sixteenth drive in the fifth race, a dash of five furlongs for two-year-olda. Adirondack led by a fair margin for a half mile and then retired in favor of Farmer Jim, but in the last eighth Emir, closely pressed by Maghoni, moved up fast and he began tiring, finishing an indifferent third. Mirance was well spent when a furlong out. Peat, suddenly recovering his best form, took the finale by a length from Evelyn Byrd, which beat Colonel Ballantyne two and a half for second place. Jessie Jarboe fell at the start. An unusually large gathering was present and witnessed an excellent day's sport. The track was drying out fast, but will be very slow at the best today. We have such positive information on these two horses that we are convinced only an accident can prevent their winning and our followers cashing. It is in this manuer I R retain my clients year in ana yesr out. If. in my miud, there is the slightest chance of onr losing, I h will not wire. Under my method of doing business I 1 CAN'T MAKE: A CENT 1 except you win. I don't ask money in advance for my information, and my only charge is that you I bot $2 for me on the horse I wire you. Be prompt in your remittances and treat me honestly, and I X will regain you the losses you have made following other information in the past. Together with my I track experts. I KNOW THE'WOBKOUTS" AND CONDITIONS of the horses, and through our i unlimited acquaintance with owners, trainers and jockeys know what "is doing." I positively will ' j not wire except suro we will win. Since July 1st I have wired but six horses. Four won at long odds, one ran third, beaton two noses after being backed from 25 to 1 to 10 to 1, and the other (Com-gj pass on Thursday) lost only by stumbling and unseating her ridor. My assertions in every instance H will be verified by a glance at my past announcements in these columns. 0 Telegrams sent in my private code only. If yon can uso this kind of information let me hear H from you. Enclose 25 cents in your first letter to guarantee mo against loss by tho refusal of tele-m grams. Address JFVd Ernest, P. O. There is every indication that Frederick Gebhard will play a prominent part in racing affairs next year. Mr. Gebhard, whose racing interests have been confined almost exclusively to stoeplechasing for tho last few years, has been a liberal buyer of yearlings this season. He has recently made arrangements whereby George Hill will train the a oo training, which include already been placed'iin IMr. Hill's charge. Nine yearlings'will also be turned over to Mr. Hill-in-the near future to receive"their early education in a racing way, and with a 'fair share of luck the Gebhard' stable may be expected to gather some of the turf plums in coming seasons. fiThe London Sportsman of June 2 gives a table of the principal? Bell, will for the "remainder of the season run in the name of his trainer, James McCormick. During the season of 1901 Mr. Bell's horses ran in McCormick's name on account of the death of his mother, which occurred early in the year, and it was as McCormick's entry that Alcedo won the Suburban Handicap. So far this season the horses have raced in the name and colors of Mr. Bell, and. he recently engaged the Eervices of Bice, the most promising of the apprentice riders now before the eastern race-going public. A dispatch from Lexington. July 7, says : "The first yearling tried out this year in Kentucky was set down for a quarter at the association track here today, it being the bay colt Merry Pioneer, the half-brother to George C. Bennett's crack Aladdin. He worked a quarter in 241 seconds, going the first eighth in 12 seconds. Merry Pioneer belongs to Dan O'Brien, who bought him for $2,000 at the recent Melbourne Stud sale in New York, he being one of the colts that were in the wreck on the Long Island Bailroad, and sold cheap on that account. So far he has shown no signs in his work of being in any way hurt. Page [3] 1 NOTICE.
